Why do so many anime characters have to be 500+ years old? It doesn't make sense, even going past the fact that they should look kind of like that petrified model from Half Life 2, you'd think that from being part of such old cultures they would act kind of ya know, like they were from that culture, instead of like modern day teenagers.

Sometimes it's because they bear the appearance of an underage character, and saying "they're hundreds of years old but haven't aged since they were 8" is an easy to make them dress and act in a way people don't want minors, real or otherwise, acting or dressing while generating very little controversy.
another possibility is that a character may look human but is actually something else. Like an elf.
You would think if they were hundreds of years old they would stop caring about what other people think of them and do whatever the heck they want.
That's why I don't like fantasy, elves and magical bullshit (dragons and fictional creatures are however fine for me)
