I live in the south-western portion of Virginia, well within Appalachia, and despite the assessment of a previous poster, it is not at all odious. The rents and utility costs are very cheap, I sold my car about a year ago since almost everything was within walking distance, and almost everything I buy is online or from the nearest medium-sized city that is about 1hr away.
