I should post something in here soon, I've been singing more recently. I still haven't had any lessons or anything so I'm probably terrible :v:
Since my voice dropped I've been having problems with pitch, by that I mean I have to put a lot of effort into hitting the right notes, or else they'll be a bit off, when it used to be effortless. Any good excercises for improving pitch control?
I really want to get something halfway-decent recorded soon but my mother's never out of the house. When she's around I naturally just duck my voice, I don't know why but it just gets so crappy and like I suppress myself:

And then when she is gone, my voice tends to sound just, less warm I guess. I'll probably be posting an example soon.
I've never had a lesson at all either. I don't know where to start dedicating myself to this. Most of my focus is on my guitar and the entire other half is singing, but I just don't know where to begin improving.

Start on middle C, go up an octave doing do re mi fa sol la ti do, come back down in reverse. Then go up a half step and do it again.
If middle C is to high, drop an octave and start there.

It helps if you play piano and can play the notes to yourself as you go up and down the scale.

Two things.
Do you warm up beforehand, and then sing, or do you just start singing?
Also, don't sing consonants. You drag your s's and some of the other consonants into what you are singing, and that takes away from the overall sound. Always sing the vowels, and use the consonants for making the distinction between one word and the next.

I usually make sure to talk for a bit before, kinda wake it up. I don't do any kind of specific warm up though, is there something I should try?
I'll try to cut down on the consonants, I see how that works out.
Thanks for the critique man, this is extremely helpful to me :)
I never got round to make a recording, so I decided to turn on my mic, take a random lyrics song of mine and play the guitar with 4 random chords. You'll hear a lot of mistakes but fuck it! Here is me singing:

you got a really unique voice, Rago.

A good warmup exercise is the same one that I told Eric95 to do for pitch control. It warms the voice up, and it gets you ready to sing.
You could also try singing through the song once before you record it, it gets everything moving how it should.
Wow didn't know this thread went active again, guess ill post my new cover, would really love some feedback on it.

Dude, that's really great, awesome voice.

Had the house to myself earlier, tried following a vocal warmup video and felt more comfortable. I tried to keep the 'essing' down but I've still noticed it's a habit I need to kick. I also screwed up one lyric somewhere and there's a part where my voice got a bit scratchy for a word or two. Where the guitar chords shift up, I noticed my voice couldn't really adjust to them so well either.
Anything else you guys can notice? :)

It's better and I like your dark timbre. What you need to work on is maintaining notes longer. Just try to play a note on the guitar and then sing that same note and maintain it without shaking or using vibrato. All the other things are just things you learn by singing more and more

Thanks man, I love the atmosphere of this thread. I'll keep at it. Knowing what to improve on feels a lot better than kinda winging it like I've been doing.

Wrote, then sang. I made quite a few fuckups, but it was my third recording, so I said fuck it.

I wanna throw in my tally!
I do growls and I'm slowly going in to Screams (way harder than I thought, even after all this time).
I don't have any proper examples, maybe a few clips that I made to try settings in Audacity.
I could always record a line or two, not ready (mostly mentally) for a full blown cover to show my full range but a few lines I could do.
As someone who wants to sing... and really can't, how do I start learning how to control my voice better and sing? Like, are there specific exercises I must start with? Is there a structured program I have to follow? Is it possible to do it without a voice trainer? I already know I'm a bass singer (using this term very, very loosely), but past that I have no clue how to further myself

Well i haven't gotten any professional help so i don't know that much, but if you just keep singing you will get better, and for me mimicking the vocals on the songs has helped me alot, and try not to sing that much with your throat, but with your stomach.

Being a bass, when you sing you want to use your diaphragm to pull as much air into your lungs as possible. Breathing in deeply with a wide open mouth and then pushing it out rapidly through puckered lips is a good way to start working that muscle. Breath with your stomach. You want to feel the air getting pulled DOWN into your lungs. Do not breath so that your shoulders come up. That tenses the voice, lessens lung capacity and is just bad in general.
A few other things to keep in mind:
What type of singing do you want to accomplish? Classical arrangements, pop, rap, metal? All of these require different muscles and types of air control.
For classical, and pop to a degree, it's all about diction and how your form the words. Being on pitch is a given. You won't sound good if you don't hit the notes. Other than that though, diction is the biggest key. Diction requires thought. Make sure that you sing (carry out sound on) the vowels of a word, not the consonants. Use the consonants for making a distinction between the words.
Practice the different ways to say vowels. Long a's vs short a's, e's, eh's, ah's, a's, etc. This will add dynamics to your singing.
Other things that help:
Sing. A lot. Don't go until your throat hurts though. You're tearing your vocal cords, and that's bad.
Practice scales (do re mi fa sol la ti do). This gets you more accustomed to being on pitch, and how different notes sound in different octaves.
Don't pigeon-hole yourself into one category of singer (bass, tenor, alto, soprano). Find out what your range is, in octaves, and then work on expanding it.

I dunno how to scream for metal, and I'm pretty bad at rapping, so don't even ask me about them.

One other thing that I haven't mentioned yet, because I figured "let the guy work on the most pressing, and go from there" is: DON'T SWALLOW YOUR VOICE! You have a tendency to bring your voice down by "swallowing" it, or singing from the throat. To get low notes or deep tones, don't try to "swallow" your voice, but bring it down by using more air and your diaphragm. Try to bring your voice forward, towards the front of your face/lips, and not the back of your mouth/throat. Relax your throat muscles and don't force your voice to be lower than it can go naturally. Let it work itself down there over time.
Other than that, you're getting much better man. I look forward to seeing what you have done in the next few months.
I won't be around because I was dumb and toxxed myself for the Patriots winning the superbowl, and they probably won't get past this week, so I'm looking for progress in the next nine months (because I also made the toxx stupidly long).
Keep singing, and doin' what you do.

Good luck on the toxx, like a hero retreating in to the shadows or something :v:

It matches the music well and I'm loving the vibe. I'm no expert singer myself but maybe a little more aggression or power? Just wanna say the track itself is fucking sweet too :D
I honestly have no idea if this is horrible or not, I know it's not great, just wondering if anyone had any tips for where I'm at so far.

Hey, just wondering if anyone knows what the best mic i could get under 50 $ for rapping would be?
I've been singing for about 3 years! but currently I have vocal nodules so once I heal from them I'll post a video.
