Wow, Steam controller only works with game on Steam? That's pretty disappointing, I'd love to use it to play Diablo 3 and other games that are off-steam.
As already mentioned, you can add as shortcut to any application and it will work, that's how I got Super Mario Sunshine and Wind Waker working. The Steam Overlay is more likely to crash with a non-steam game, though
According to my friend it doesn't work with undertale at all.
Didn't play Undertale much, but it does work without any problems for me. [sp]but I heard the game sometimes requires other keys on the keyboard, I assume in some kind of fourth-wall breaking joke, so maybe using the controller with Undertale isn't a very good idea?[/sp]
when I tried using mine for saints row gat out of hell, I mapped the mouse at the right trackpad, with the rest of the controller using normal button mapping (as is, emulating a controller), but the game didnt liked that combo, because everytime i moved the camera while moving, the camera would be janky as hell.
Some third person games technically support simultaneous gamepad and mouse inputs, but do weird stuff. I've seen multiple games support mouse camera movement while walking with the left joystick, but the sensitivity is so low, it's ridiculous. But, thankfully, I've only seen this in 3rd person games, and they usually play just fine with mouse-like joystick
I must say that INFRA is a perfect game for the controller, right pad as mouse and the rest as regular controller binds. Though I put up a four button menu on the left pad to be easier to get to the quicksave/load buttons alongside the camera and flashlight. Also got to try playing some Fallout 4 with it, that game is horrible about letting you use both kb+m and controller though, literally forcing you to switch through the options menu which one you want to exclusively use. Ended up doing a weapon wheel on the left pad for it which turned out really nicely, especially with all the available icons. You can also do a button press when the stick reaches a certain range, so was even able to vaguely emulate the controller walk/run binds.
I've been using mine on and off for various games. I played through all of Dark Souls 3 with it and loved it, having roll and use item commands on the paddles made panic evasions and quick healing super simple and saved me having to pin down a face button just to sprint. I've not had as much luck configuring it for other games. I made a pretty solid Just Cause 2 config, but I don't play the game much now so it was kind of a waste of time. I spent a while making a Enter the Gungeon config that wasn't complete shit (seriously, they all suck), but due to how the Steam Controller works it fucks with Co-Op as I use the keyboard bindings rather than gamepad ones (mix and match is not an option in the game, it freaks the fuck out). It's really quite fun to just play with possibilities for configs, even if they aren't optimal for the game you can come up with some really neat things at times. And Valve are slowly improving it (they added radial menus recently I think?). I don't regret buying it, even if it doesn't see much use. I have no idea why this is, but its really annoying as it just drops your binds back to a 360 emulation I usually find. Not a great thing to have happen in the middle of surviving a 3 on 2 DS3 invasion.
the steampad is literally the best thing for gta5 possible a controller with the accuracy of a stick for driving and still be virtually as quick and accurate as a mouse. I've played GTA5. Dark Souls 2 and 3. Doom. Sniper Elite 3. Witcher 3. UT99. Garrys mod (Fully working profile, this is the one game I don't thing will work with it in sandbox, but it's perfect for a numpad style command pad). Fallout 4. MGS5. That and a bunch of other games, but most genres I care for, and it works insanely will in them really.
My issue with console ports is that since they extremely rarely support both gamepad and mkb inputs at the same time, you have to choose between accurate character movement of gamepad or accurate camera movement of mkb, since you'll have to simulate one of the two. Did you figure out a compromise?
this is a really rudimentary question but I just got my steam controller a few weeks ago in the recent sale so I'm entirely new to a ton of this stuff - for Sunshine & Wind Waker, did you just add an executable to Steam for Dolphin as a non-steam game or is that a third party deal for Dolphin itself? I didn't realize that the Steam Controller could possibly do emulated games! [editline]16th October 2016[/editline] also the little minimod you put together for HL2 is amazing, good job man. Completely agree on the sharing system. it's really, really counterintuitive. I was quite shocked at the fact that all I had was a basic description on the main page and had to export the config and examine it first instead of having a bit more of a complex description. not terribly friendly for new users, so I'm glad to hear they'll be making some changes
Yeah, you're gonna wanna add the executable to Steam. There's also a weird kinda strange kinda-bug-but-not-really where the Steam Controller only sends inputs when an application is running and if you are just in the Dolphin menu it won't work, and it can be finicky getting the dual-stage triggers to work. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=571637466 This will help you out. [editline]17th October 2016[/editline]
My only complaint is the poor d-pad. It's just not useable for platformers
It takes a lot of getting used to, but once you do the Dpad is actually really nice. I wound up beating Sans from Undertale with it, which I think is a pretty good litmus for its viability. Sans is one of the hardest bosses in a game in recent memory and requires very precise Dpad inputs so if it can work in that situation, I think it can work practically anywhere. [editline]17th October 2016[/editline]
I've not found a game that HASN'T worked well with the steam controller only game I've had issues with is garrys mod and maybe space engineers, but even though games could technically work if you adjusted them enough, just not as well though that's because Gmod and SpaceEng are insanely complex and built for a kb/m only
One of these days I will sit down and figure out Garry's Mod on this thing. It will probably involve action sets, one for general "fps-style" gameplay and one for "build mode". It would be cool to program in a "numpad" using touch menus for both weapon selection and piloting contraptions. I did something like this for Human Revolution. I made the touch menu look like a numpad for selecting things on the hotbar which had the side effect of allowing it to work perfectly for input in Keypads.

[editline]18th October 2016[/editline]
My only complaint is the poor d-pad. It's just not useable for platformers
That's certaintly not the case, you can bind the D-pad to click, or touch, both are great.
Steam controller doesn't work with sourcemods (unless they're available on Steam)
Steam controller doesn't work with sourcemods (unless they're available on Steam)
Add Non-Steam Game.
Add Non-Steam Game.
I don't think you understand how sourcemods work.

Did you figure out a compromise?
there is a mouse-like joystick mode for touchpads (controls like a mouse but outputs a joystick), which is probably the best you're going to get for games that don't support gamepad and kb+m at the same time. another thing you could do is just tell gamepad controls to fuckoff and map all your controller inputs to keyboard keys [editline]18th October 2016[/editline]
I don't think you understand how sourcemods work.
not that i remember how those mods worked, but as long as you are able to create a shortcut with arguments in order to run the game with the mod, all it takes is for you to create a shortcut on steam (via "add non-steam game") and copy in the shortcut arguments via properties that's how i was able to create separate "non-steam games" for each rom for a console emulator, which works with the controller.
I don't think you understand how sourcemods work.
Explain to me how thats not a viable option. I mean, ive had a number of sourcemods i added onto my steam library with the "add non-steam game" option, overlay works and everything. Why wouldnt the controller work then?
Steam controller doesn't work with sourcemods (unless they're available on Steam)
Sourcemods do work, its just that currently, you have to change the binding for the source sdk base that the mod uses, instead of changing the binding for the actual mod. [editline]a[/editline] Or just add it as a non-steam shortcut.
Oh sweet, i was wondering how to do that.
if you think that's interesting, then i think it might be worth mentioning there's an open source project dedicated to automatically converting folders of roms into steam shortcuts (complete with banner art and everything)
-snip, someone else already answered (about how to get steam controller with sourcemods working)
I mean, ive had a number of sourcemods i added onto my steam library with the "add non-steam game" option, overlay works and everything. Why wouldnt the controller work then?
As soon as you launch the mod, it does so under the SDK base. AKA it's in your library as a "non-Steam game" but functionally it's just a regular mod.
As soon as you launch the mod, it does so under the SDK base. AKA it's in your library as a "non-Steam game" but functionally it's just a regular mod.
Ok? Shouldnt the Steam Controller still work if it can start, through steam, with the overlay?
As soon as you launch the mod, it does so under the SDK base. AKA it's in your library as a "non-Steam game" but functionally it's just a regular mod.
i've found that as long as your steam shortcut at any point opens a program that uses opengl or something, your controller will work. steam couldn't care less if it's actually a game or not.
