Well that's great no music/art/anything else for you.
Basically you're supporting becoming mindless workers who can only converse amongst others of the same profession.
You're so naive.

HOLY SHIT! Some one get this guy a gold medal!
Suck it the fuck up.
[editline]12:04AM[/editline]
fuck
When will you need MLA formatting?
Uhh, your college thesis, and any further publication following.
I use MLA formatting every single day, half of my job is being able to write well.
Any job you have that requires you write up a report on something or write in any capacity will need you to be able to use MLA formatting.

I want to be an engineer. Why am i wasting my precious school time learning about how plants fucking reproduce. I could give a shit about cell walls, endoplasmic reticulum, and Golgi Apparatus'. That shit is so useless to the rest of my life. I learn that for two reasons. To Get an A in the class to show colleges Im ready, and to forget when I'm done with it.
Well aren't we smart taking biology for a physics related job :downs:
A student talking about practical, real-life applications of an education he is shunning = the problem with our education system.

Yeah that about sums it up...If you plan on being am office worker.

I dislike the arts because I'm terrible at any sort of drawing/sculpting/etc.
Although I did enjoy band, I only quit because I hated practicing at home... :sigh:
You're obviously to young to understand.
If you think proofs are worthless, then you obviously don't understand math/logic.
I think that the flaw in the educational system is how we appraise our understanding of the subject material. Not that I know how things go down in college (just a junior in high school), but up until this year, all I've been doing is sucking up to all of my teachers and putting down answers they want me to say. It's not a matter of "Hmm let's critically examine this and offer a fresh new viewpoint on it", it's, "Hmm I'll just agree with the teacher to get the A, since that's how I'm going to look good to colleges".
I also find that the grading system in general is more a determinant of effort than it is for actual intellectual skill. I know many people who do not have good grades but who mop the floor with me. There are several people in my grade level who everyone acknowledges as incredibly smart but incredibly lazy, and their grades only reflect the lazy part.
My teachers themselves say our system is fucked up. We skip the basic math stuff and head straight for the hard shit
There are several people in my grade level who everyone acknowledges as incredibly smart but incredibly lazy, and their grades only reflect the lazy part.
Also thats me
School's piss easy.
It's just that I don't do a lot of the work assigned to me, and that's why I get such low grades.
I learned everything I really needed to learn in 1st-6th grade, the rest I'm yet to use at all in any scenario that I've been in aside from the film class I took because I actually do things outside of school involving it.
I can remember my first year in college when my English professor said that everything we learned about how to write an essay or paper in Highschool..."forget about it. Wipe it from your memories."
Let me tell you a story about a kid I knew in highschool who thinks the same way you, the OP, are thinking. This kid went through highschool as an underachieving fool. His logic was that "everything is unecessary. Why am I wasting my time doing this?". Constantly thought like this. Made it hell for teachers to actually get him to do work. He spent more time rebelling against the school system than actually just doing the work that, if anything, he wasted his own time everyday he set foot in that school. I was baffled as to why he didn't just drop out of highschool. Oh wait, Highschool is a pre-requisite to College/University! You drop out of highschool you might as well begin flipping burgers. I guess that was constantly pecking away in the back of his thick skull so he decided to stay in school. Needless to say, he never "officially" graduated highschool. I remember him specifically not walking the stage or even being present during grad. This kid now, with barely a highschool education is working as a "Machinist Apprentice" at some metal working factory. I'm not entirely sure what exactly he does but he deals with cutting sheets of metal and whatnot. That's it. For the rest of his life he's going to be cutting sheets of metal and making nuts and bolts or something. I'll be sure to call up the company he'll work for so that I can use the metal sheets he produces to build my highrise office building (:v: ).
You see, the way I look at it is that despite not wanting to go through school because I feel that I don't need it (I never liked math, for example, because I planned on going into a field revolving around history instead, why the fuck would I need math right?) I still do it anyway because I know that it makes a goddamn difference in the end. Good luck trying to get into college with below average marks! Good luck trying to make something of yourself with a highschool education! The point of Middle School and Highschool is to be a broad enough system to cover all aspects of learning.
The OP presents no real argument and instead sounds more like an angsty teen who thinks "school sucks" and is merely ranting about something he doesn't truly understand.
I will not comment on whether education in the US needs reform because I'm currently living in Canada and feel that's not the point of this discussion anyway.
I find OP funny. You're going to want satisfy those "useless" subjects if you want to get into college and actually go somewhere with your life.
You going to still keep that attitude? If so then have fun being a failure.
College is a completely different and awesome arena, I learned more in 12 weeks than I did in 5 years of the English Secondary School system (long complicated story as to why and how).
You will want to get into College so you won't be a pimple in the armpit of society.
People bringing up colleges did not read the OP.
I said that colleges are the only exception. We should learn in high school just like we do in college. with more choice.
Like University and trade school system the UK has.
As for everyone else, you have valid points, but I stand by my opinion. And No, Im not a 12 year old angry about to much Homework. Im an 18 year old Raging at having to waste my time doing work that doesnt need to be done.
The classic math example. Why do 50 problems when I understand the subject after 10? its a waste of time.
Oh our bad.
You're an 18 year old bitching about work.
That changes so much.
Hey OP, ever thought of knowing something for the point of knowing it? That's called an education. Grow up and do your homework.
By the way, you have no idea what your future career is. I wanted to work with wild animals growing up, by the time I got into college I switched majors three times.
For example, lets say the world works according to your design. So you go to a special school where you learn about electronics. Time comes for you to go out into the working world, and you find out you can't get a job in that field, or you do but you hate it. Now what? Let's say you wanted to do something bioscience related instead, but you don't even know what the hell a cell is, or how it works, because your specialized school never covered it.
The classic math example. Why do 50 problems when I understand the subject after 10? its a waste of time.
Practice makes perfect.
If you understand it, super. Then the extra 40 problems should be easy for you.
Quitcherbitchin.
Writing with MLA is an extremely important tool to use. You don't know what you're talking about.
The classic math example. Why do 50 problems when I understand the subject after 10? its a waste of time.
That's the teachers grading criteria. My math teacher only counts homework as 10% of the grade. You could get away with not doing homework the entire year If you knew what you where doing and passed the tests.
I think the school system is shit, but not for your reasons. Mine are mainly because some of my teachers are horrible. Honestly, I don't think I've learned a single new thing out of my english class. I think my teacher's view of teaching us creative writing is making us write essays and then handing them back with no constructive criticism written on the paper.
I do however have some great teachers that really know what they're doing.
[editline]09:05PM[/editline]
Also: You know how your teacher makes you read a chapter and answer the questions in the end? And have you ever seen her grade it, simply taking a second to look at it and she writes +10 on it?
She doesn't do that because she's a bad teacher, she does that because she knows that none of you will actually read what she assigns unless she also adds some questions in the end that reflect on the reading.
Education is retarded.
Our system, The US's system I mean, is Terrible.
Lets do a breakdown.
Education in the united states consists of Elementary school. You learn to share, speak, comprehend language, write, do basic math, and get the basic social skills you need for life.
Middle school, You learn more complex math and writing, you learn about homework and hell, you learn about drugs and drinking and how it kills, you get prepared for High school.
High school you learn more complex everything, branch of into more specific forms of science and math and language, get prepared for college.
College is the only Worthwhile form of schooling, aside from elementary, more on this later.
The shit storm starts in middle school. History, in general. Important. Very important. more basic algebra math, Very important, everyone will use this regardless of professions.
Literature and Writing. Uselessness begins.. so Yeah, Grammar is very important, we want to sound educated, and sentence structure and spelling are all important. However essay formats are where the retardation starts. You learn in middle school about Claim data commentary, MLA, Chicago Style writing, 3 paragraph, 5 paragraph, intro, and conclusion.
ALL of this. Relatively useless. WHEN in life will we ever need to sit down and write a paper in MLA format for the general public/boss. News paper writers all write how they please, as many paragraphs as it takes. They give a shit about structure.
Public speakers write in their own style of writing. They don't give a shit.
NO ONE. GIVES. A SHIT. about specific paragraph styles! Why do we waste MONTHS of time learning and practicing writing this useless garbage of a skill. The MONTHS that we learn this in our classes, is HOURS of time students lose learning things THEY want to learn and will find important. THE HOURS of time students spend at home finishing the essays for this class, are USELESS! The Time we waste is just that, wasted time.
Moving on to 8th grade and Up.
8th grade homework hits hard. Specifically in math. Let me refresh your 8th grade year in math. You learn a topic, you go home do 40+ problems and turn that in the next day. It doesn't matter if you understand this 100% after 5 problems, after 10, or after 20. YOU MUST COMPLETE THE ENTIRE SHEET. its a good thing grades mean nothing in middle school, or you kids who didn't do this useless homework would start getting fucked over early on.
School isn't personal enough. When I get a topic and can prove it after 5 problems, Fuck the other 35 that is a waste of productive time. that extra half hour I could be using learning more advanced math, and getting ahead of the class another day, or 2 days, or week, or weeks, or months, all building up.
I estimate by the 12th grade, if I could have taken the math classes I was ready for, and skipped the useless shit they teach you( proofs, anyone? ) I could have gone past calculus, instead, I was stuck at fucking pre-calc/Calc.
2 semesters of Life and earth and space sciences could have been used towards a robots class, an engineering class, another chemistry class, or hell. Some Electrical Engineering pre-requisites. Something that leads me to my future career.
I could go ON. and ON. about the most useless topics and time wasted in school. Or I can just say, Hey FP. Debate.
Is the shit we learn in our US education system totally useful, mostly useful, or useless. Tell me what, and why.
TLDR: The Education system in the United states ( not sure if anywhere else) is not personal enough. We learn many things to simply take up time in the day that we COULD be using to further our knowledge in the fields of education we would prefer to learn.
the United states has what one would call a liberal education system (part of the liberal market economy), which means early on we're taught very broad topics while most places in western europe are taught specifics so that they get an awesome education in one specific subject. The benefit of our system is that when you lose your job in a recession, you don't get buttfucked because you can't find another job (something that tends to happen in coordinated market economies), as you've got the general education to back you up. It leans towards people in EU generally getting a more specified education that interests them more and trains them more intricately.
And if you're an engineer, you should be aware that you're going to have to get into the writing, especially the formal styles. Guess what you're going to have to write? Project proposals! Those are some of the most formal papers written, even moreso than the traditional research paper ;D
basically if you don't straighten the fuck up you're going to fail out of college and never amount to anything so stop fucking bitching
High school is pretty much "work your ass off to memorize this, take the test on it, then completely forget it to make room for next weeks test".
I also hate essay format. It's an inefficient uncreative format. Every time I see a paper written in it it just sounds so cheesy that it's impossible to take seriously. I could deal with it, but I really hate conclusions, they're useless.
Actually pretty much everything you said makes sense. But you're going to get dumbs because you have an awesome smiley avatar and non-perfect grammar.
also high school is just training for college
you're not really expected to retain anything from it, just basics of sentence structure / how to write / take notes properly / attune you to be a proper scholar
you throw out the 5 paragraph structure on your first college paper
and if you write in the 5 paragraph structure while in high school you're pretty fucking retarded as it's entirely useless, generic, and vague.

Actually, all of my teachers read the answers because they don't assume.
They check.

no he's going to get dumbs because he's approaching school like a complete and utter child that's whining about things he can't change and is looking for an outlet and what he needs to understand is that it's tough fucking shit and we really do not give a damn
