honestly, I'd rather drop $600 on a Sun Project M16A2 than $500 on a fusion engine

Yeah, but it wouldn't work without a radical redesign, and you'd lose all the gas efficiency that your gun is dependent on.
You also wouldn't be able to install them in a million types of guns, so they'd really be no better than another GBBR.
