I might be missing something here but what is the main distinguishing factor between vaporwave and other forms of electronica? Most of the stuff I've listened to so far in this thread just sounds like decent electro.

Vaporwave uses other songs for samples and is blatant about it, but that's the point.
Other forms of electronica that use other songs for samples get either taken down for ruining the music industry or they get praise for having an 'original' beat.

Well vaporwave takes kitsch and banal artifacts from the 80s and 90s and recontextualizes them, but it also has a visual aesthetic to it, related to pop art, collage and digital art. It emphasizes mass production and artificiality. It's not meant to be a direct imitation of the past, but it's about the experience and memory of the past, looking at it through a specific lens, the nostalgic kind of feeling you'd get these days if you were to watch a VHS cassette on a little TV. Vaporwave producers attempt to replicate that nostalgic feeling in all they do.
...Or it's just a bunch of muzak and TV commercial samples from the 80s that people put high-pass filters and beats to. Take your pick, really.
In the end it's art and it's highly subjective. You can get something out of it or you can't, and that's really the end of the road for some people.
The most prominent and influential piece of art that really demonstrates this that I can think of has to be Fountain.

It can either be just a fucking toilet, or an extremely meaningful statement on the artistic community and art as a whole. And both interpretations are legitimate.

Actually, that fountain was a product of Dada.
The Dada Movement intentionally produced pieces that had no actual meaning behind their creation. The whole point was to protest the meaningless nature of WWI at the time through equally meaningless art.
You can argue there's meaning behind it; but the fact that it's associated with Dada more than likely means it's just nothing more but a urinal with some letters drawn on the side.

Yes. One of my favorite albums ever (not vaporwave though)
I just love the art on it. If it was more colorful it could be perfect. Art like this is definitely my favorite (both visual and music)

Chaotic and tongue in cheek, but really great 'aesthetics'.
Man, I feel silly for liking this stuff so much after watching this video. Thanks thread.
I discovered the Vaporwave aesthetic before all of you did

I am the original
The videos even if they are just random clips of stuff are always pretty cool as well

You just gave it meaning by saying this. It's 'meaningless' is actually pretty meaningful.
And I'm pretty certain one of the reasons was because Duchamp was making a statement on the art community at the time (he was making fun of Dada actually was my take).

It's interesting being a jazz musician and hearing My Foolish Heart which is my all time favorite Bill Evans standard played on this album as vaporwave. Sounds real dumb honestly, but that's just cause I'm used to paying attention to his playing.
