A CA M249 would probably be "better." Just about anything that costs more than the Echo1 would be "better" (if that's even possible anymore with these new cheap and efficient clones). However, you guys probably ain't got the money for an $800 SAW, and it would take you guys a while to save up anyhow.

Provided your field doesn't have retarded rules, you may want to look into getting a JG MG36 + G36-compatible C-mag. Very cheap start for a support kit (not sure if the internals could survive though). If you have $250, you could also get an SRC RPK (or an Echo1 Red Star like Foos has?) but with the MG36 idea you'll get style points for a less-typical setup and still have $50 to spare for the doubtless thousands of BBs you'll be firing later on.
