It's a thing called "headcanon." Some people picture characters differently from others, and as a result draw them like that. People who spend a lot of time looking at these drawings who also draw tend to also picture these characters in a similar fashion. These kinds of subconscious assignments of characters to archetypes can transfer through good media.
I picture feferi as a slim teenage girl, if only because of the similarity to a girl I once knew in attitude. I do picture jade being a bit more curvaceous than rose, if only because I don't really meet any goths with badonk and most geek girls I've known are like that. John is a bit dorky, slim. Dave is more broad shouldered and a bit taller. I don't really picture any of the characters as unattractive people. Not sure why.
