All viewports darken when viewing the grimdark, but you can presumably still communicate to the person if they're willing to hold a conversation. If Kanaya tried to talk to Rose after the blackout she never received a response because Rose was too focused on flying to Skaia and killing Jack to chat.

There was also a part near the beginning where Jade saw John's dreamself while he was sleeping.
I think it's because they were asleep as both of their "selves" at the time.

I think that just returns them to their place of rest. If awakened dreamselves really did vanish from the physical plane while the dreamer is awake then Jack shouldn't have been able to kill Sollux's, Terezi's, Kanaya's, Equius's, Eridan's and Gamzee's dreamselves. Plus Dream Dave saw Dream Rose sleeping while he was rifling through her book collection, so Dream John was likely sleeping on his Skaian quest bed replica or somewhere else. Vriska did say that Prospit dreamers are meant to end up on Skaia eventually.
