He's just a doomed Dave like the others, but persisted for several months (hours?) before traveling back and redirecting the alpha timeline to its correct path, which proves that it was necessary for him to come back and do exactly that. Only the heroes of time can create branch timelines because their decisions affects the outcome of everything, so when Dave prototyped Lil' Cal the timeline split. Perhaps John would have made it back alive from encountering Typheus if Dave hadn't prototyped Cal, but since he had no alternative at the time it went down the doomed path it did.
