Just furthering the explanation of the answer to the question originally asked by Blargtastic. And who knows, perhaps the Underlings seen aren't Imps, but instead are Basilisks and Giclops instead. All the Imps shown so far are relatively the same size, even after Terezi and Vriska entered the Medium. Or they could be planet-specific Underlings, like the monsters that John's dad, Rose's mom, and Bro killed during [I][S] Jack: Ascend[/I].
I wouldn't classify those as underlings so much as planet specific creatures akin to the consorts and denizens.

I would, since the monster that Rose's mom killed dropped a ton of grist, meaning that it's an underling. Derse commissioned the Denizens of each planet to create underlings for them, and the monster Bro killed was wearing a colorful hat, attributing to John's prototyping. Because the source of the Armies of Light and Darkness is the veil and the pawns are only found on the Battlefield instead of hunting the players, the Underlings came from the Denizens instead. So any creature that drops grist is probably relating to the Denizens, and therefore is an Underling.
