The problem with really huge fandoms though is that while percentage wise the wierdos will be the same as any other, that's still a flippin' huge amount of wierdos more which will end up getting noticed.

Yes because LOST is a show that panders to a much broader audience.
Homestuck is a much stranger entity that entertains an appropriately stranger viewer base. To the vast majority of the population, it would just seem like a stupid little comic. It attracts the attention of a weird crowd.
If you honestly came here expecting completely logical conversation with no off-beat posts then you seriously need to rethink your life.
