What happens when you throw a box full of garbage into a volcano lake

I still wonder what would happen if we threw a nuke right down a volcanoe

Droplets of molten rock flying several miles across the landscape, lighting everything it touches on fire.
I want them to do this to my body when I die.
I want to be thrown into the sun, a lot more cool..
Wow, something tells me that you wouldn't die instantly if you were to fall into lava.
From that height you would. Lava isn't like water; it's much more dense. I would imagine it being like hitting liquid concrete.
If you were to walk in lava, you wouldn't sink either. But I'm assuming the lava would still engulf you with a violent reaction from the steam off your burning body.

Hitting water at terminal velocity is essentially the same as hitting concrete.
I'd love to see a propane tank thrown in.
Drop a ton of dry ice in there.
Holy shit so many awesome things to drop into it

one day I'm going to buy myself some volcano and spend all day dropping stuff down there
[editline]25th June 2012[/editline]
Holy shit i want to fucking poke it with a stick
I want to be thrown into the sun, a lot more cool..
Actually, a it would be lot less cool (geddit?)
Well this just proves how meaningless we are. Imagine if that was a person. It would just go poof
Pooft

Pooft
Anyway, lava is so weird. It's liquid, but it's on fire!
Wow, something tells me that you wouldn't die instantly if you were to fall into lava.
You'll eventually run out of health points and stop bouncing off the surface
That shit down there is molten rock.
Fucking molten rock.
I can't even imagine how hot this is
That shit down there is molten rock.

I can! It's between 700°C and 1200°C :eng101:
I wonder what that kind of heat would feel like. Would it just fry your nerves instantly?
Lava is so cool
Now we have a solution to this so-called "running out of space at dumps" problem!
Seems like the perfect waste disposal system. Why didn't anyone do this sooner?

Because releasing toxic fumes into the atmosphere is a bit of a bad idea.
Because releasing toxic fumes into the atmosphere is a bit of a bad idea.
Exactly. There's a reason we don't just burn everything.
I can't even imagine how hot this is
i know right?
:quagmire:
An interesting tidbit about falling into lava
At those temperatures, you wouldn’t burst into flames. Considering the human body is made up of 80% water, the portions of your body that come in contact with the lava would generate huge amounts of steam, which would likely have sufficient pressure to blow you up off of the surface (at those temps the transformation of water to steam will expand by a volumetric factor in the thousands almost instantly).
I work in the metals industry, and the fear of steam explosions is a constant. At our facility, well before things like OSHA were around to keep everyone safe, an individual fell into a furnace three feet deep, full of molten aluminum (roughly 760°C). He was blown back out of the furnace, and actually died from the impact of that as opposed to anything else.

reminds me of a gigantic pimple being popped
I'd love to see a propane tank thrown in.
Most likely, the tank would rupture from the expanding gas, but the tank wouldn't melt that fast, iron melts at 3,000+F i think.
Because releasing toxic fumes into the atmosphere is a bit of a bad idea.
Actually, we can heat up trash to the point where it breaks down into its core elements, and therefore cannot release harmful waste products. A scientist in Florida invented a plasma containment system so hot that when he pushed waste products through it, it was immediately decimated and he simply collected the carbon, the oxygen and the hydrogen. :eng101:

So if you fell into lava, you wouldn't sink under and melt, just go flying back?
An interesting tidbit about falling into lava
Woah so Mario was actually doing it right all this time!
I'm honestly terrified of lava
It reminds me of Macdonalds fries. Garbage goes in, something amazing comes out.

You mean the fries are made of garbage or something amazing comes out your asshole?
The volcano was not happy with the non human sacrifice
