Is that what movies are supposed to be now? Political and social statements? Are they implying the new Ghostbusters is a big social breakthrough?
Will never happen unless there is going to be a large amount of source saying it's doing badly. Meanwhile, it already attracted one notorious single-purpose account reverting anything negative.
it's been out two weeks and hasn't even covered its budget yet. it will probably get somewhere about $200 million when finished, which is a box office disappointment. paul feig wasn't wrong to estimate that the film would need about $500m to break even, seeing as how it would need $300m just to make a profit, and that number won't be reached.

They need to make 500 mil to make the budget back and start turning a profit. Rule of thumb is studios only get 1/2 of domestic box office gross, 1/3rd of foreign (if im not wrong). Movies budget was 144 million, advertising budget was 100+ million. Multiply 244 by 2 and you get 488, which lines up with what Paul Feig said they need to make to break even. So so far they've only gotten roughly 60 million back of the current 120 million. So as of right now, they have 180 million dollars less thanks to this movie. There wont be any more Ghostbusters films, this is a stillborn franchise.

Box office predictions are in for this weekend, so I'd say it's pretty safe to make some guesses about where this films gonna end up. People were sorta optimistic at the start since Feig+McCarthy's films usually have really solid legs at the box office, which is a huge part of a film's success, but this one broke that trend and is getting a little bit more than halved returns every weekend (as opposed to the 20-40% Feig usually gets). Also, the international box office is bringing in pretty much fuck all. My guess: Domestic looks to end at ~$125 million, foreign at ~$60 million (harder to predict as more big places haven't opened yet, IE: Mexico, Japan, Spain, Germany, and France, but I went off how Pixels did), so grand total will probably be ~$185 million. On a total production+advertising budget of at least $250 million I think it's safe to say people can stop trying to spin this as a success now lol. I guess the question now is: Do they back-pedal on the sequels and risk looking like schmucks, or push the sequels anyways on a slashed budget?
yes. this is what entertainment, to these people, has to be. everything must have a political or social breakthrough. every movie must shove a fist straight up into a ham.
People have been trying to come up with ridiculous political analogies for movies for decades. Hell, some Conservative commentators said that Forrest Gump was promoting American Conservatism. Despite, you know, him being a fairly tolerant and progressive individual with an open mind. Kind of the exact opposite of the Conservatism of the 60s.

I think they'll pull a fox and quietly backtrack on it. A sequel wasn't officially announced, the guy just said he expects it to be made and for the ghostcorps thing to happen, which it may still happen, but it would probably be another reboot.
