• A 29-Year-Old Woman Hears Herself for the First Time Thanks to Hearing Implants

While it's absolutely fantastic, what I don't get is how she knew what the woman was saying when she had her hands over her eyes. Surely if she's hearing things for the first time in her life, she wouldn't know what words sound like when they're spoken, and she'd need to read the woman's lips to associate the lip movements with the sounds they were making? I dunno. Pretty awesome all the same :v:
If she's deaf how did she know what "beeping" was? HMMMMMM
can your god do this? i dont think so
THESE IMPLANTS ARE THE WORK OF GODLESS SCIENCE! REPENT! REPENT!
Give that woman some Pendulum
why would you want her to hate her new implant [editline]2nd October 2011[/editline]
If she's deaf how did she know what "beeping" was? HMMMMMM
because deaf people are still able to read about things and understand concepts they're not stupid they just can't hear
how did she understand what people were saying if it was the first time she could hear? fake
fake allegations

I was born deaf and have worn hearing aids from the age of 2, but hearing aids only help so much. I have gotten by this long in life by reading lips. This was taken as they were activating the implant ... My whole life I've been complimented on how well I speak. I don't really have an answer for you other than I have always had a passion for reading, grammar, and English. My hearing loss was/is considered severe to profound. I've worked very hard to be able to interact and blend in.

Well, most technology was at first only used by the military, or based on military tech. Also, why can't we improve ourselves? Of course we can, once the technology is avaible., in fact we should!
And become dependent of our new artificial limbs. Good idea. Do you really think augmentations for the public, should they ever exist, could possibly be good while at a reasonable price and free of any dependence regarding who made them ? Just look at cars. Overhaul is mandatory very regularly, and it's quite expensive, along with the fact even if you already bought a car, you will always be pushed to buy another supposedly better one. Augmentations will suffer the exact same fate if they touch the public. First of, the good augmentations will only be available to ludicrously rich people. Second, you would have to go to the augmentations builder and have an overhaul for every single of your augmentation which would be expensive and long. Finally, you would have a lot of advertising to be pushed towards buying new augmentations, without even mentioning the fact people will be discriminated against for their augmentations (or the fact they don't have any), it would become mandatory for jobs, you would become a living target for thieves (they're already stealing cars and organs, tell me what will prevent them from stealing augmentations), and you would probably be tracked down because heh, if they can put a gps in a car or in a phone, why not in a robotic arm.
Wow.
I was really emotional and happy but then the video ended and this fucker went and ruined everything
She asked for this. Jokes aside, this is really incredible.
Flawed logic is flawed. It's like saying "hey that one guy can run again because he has prosthesis for his legs ! LET'S ALL CUT OFF OUR LIMBS SO WE ALL HAVE PROSTHESIS INSTEAD". It doesn't make any sense. It sure is a good thing to see someone getting her life improved by technology but that doesn't mean it's necessarily better than ours, nor that we should all suddenly butcher our inner ears with scalpels so we can get fancy implants instead. Trans-humanism should be limited to these cases where people actually need it, not just because it's fancy and nice and can improve a human being that was already well built and without any problems in the first place.
Are you also against piercings and tattoos? :colbert: [editline]3rd October 2011[/editline] I mean why would someone mutilate themselves for something they don't need, that should be illegal.

Like cars, as I said.
How does she know what the woman says when she has her hands before her face? If she has been deaf her whole life she shouldn't be able to recognize speech without reading the lips of the woman which she couldn't do because she had her hands in front of her face.
It's possible to understand how sounds work even if you can't hear, and she's had hearing aids since she was 2.
I see, that does explain a lot.
Piercing and tatoos are purely aesthetic, augmentations have a practical purpose. Like cars, as I said.
I think the fact that it fundamentally changes your body is what scares people. But think of it like this: what did people think when they invented clothing way back when? "my skin works perfectly fine why would I cover with something else and then be dependent on it" Clothing costs money, yes, but it allows us to live in environments too cold for us to live in naturally, and gives s a layer of protection from the natural world. If we tried to live in places like Alaska or something without clothing, we would freeze. As time passed clothing became the societal norm for literally the entire world, though styles and such varied between regions. Augmentations and transhumaniam stuff is merely the next step. Anyway, I'm heading to the mass debate thread now. Inspiring video for what it's worth!
If she enjoyed her own voice she's going to love music.
Oh my god I never though of that, this is beautiful.
Piercing and tatoos are purely aesthetic, augmentations have a practical purpose. Your logic is kinda flawed, and you managed to misunderstand someone basicly saying how hearing aids will help those who cant hear, into "Because we can now use hearing aids that let you hear, we all should remove our sense of hearing and use those instead".
how the fuck could she understand what the woman said if she never heard spoken language before!?! Edit: It would be like learning a new language you never heard before and you only learn how to read and write, then hear someone speak it. I doubt you'd be able to understand it. (If the language you chose to learn was faaaaar from what you speak already. Like some weird african language.

If you cut off your arm and get a robotic one, you should expect huge amounts of money put on a regular basis threw out of the window for repair and overhaul, because you can't expect such things to be totally free of charge after initial order.
I'm currently in process of getting a cochlear implant for free (40k), I currently have the choice of rejecting it or accepting it. It's not really a easy choice as you may think it to be.
May I ask why? I've never really had that choice so I can't think of what you're going through. Is it irreversible? Anyways, good luck on whatever choice you choose.

All I need is a hacksaw and I'll be ready to punch some motherfuckers.
At 0:56 she has her eyes covered so she obviously can't read the other woman's lips, so how the hell does she understand what the woman's saying if she's never heard spoken language before in her life? That along with her perfect speech (I've met quite a few people who have been deaf since birth and their speech is sort of 'abnormal') makes me really doubt the validity of this video tbh. [editline]4th October 2011[/editline] Woops, late. Anyway,
It's possible to understand how sounds work even if you can't hear, and she's had hearing aids since she was 2.
What?? How are hearing aids going to help if you're deaf? You can't make silence louder... She's been deaf since birth, and if she's hearing herself for the first time, that obviously means it's the first time she's heard anything in general

She still has her inner ear and everything in place, it's just that her natural hearing assets are too weak to make her hear correctly.

Now, science, when can we finally use those brains you saved up all these years.
Not to be an asshole, but I kinda think this is fake. I mean the girls reaction seems legitimate, but wouldn't 29 years of not being able to properly sound out words due to lack of hearing make her, well, still have the same problem immediately after activation of the hearing device? Just a thought. I'm not saying the whole video is faked, I'm simply saying it seems more likely to me that she has been able to hear before.
