Either the houses in Australia are all near a lot of things, or the difference in their markets is really just that high. Then again, EVERYTHING in Australia costs more than it does in America.
You have to keep in mind that the average Australian male earns more than most US astronauts and district attorneys, so it balances out.
i like the houses out west of oakville (ontario)
very reasonable prices for very large lots
I just wanna throw this out there right now, I recently moved from Chicago to Michigan, I moved from ghetto crackhead gangbanger central to a nice 2 acre plot with a crystal clear lake at my back yard, with a boathouse filled with toys and shit.
2 acres, two houses (a four car garage, and a two car garage one for each house) only like $455,000 lol we bought it in '08 when shit fucking hit the fan.

Yea I know. I was thinking of that but I didn't mention it.
My families renting 4 bedroom, 3.5 bath on about 2 acres of land that's on the water with a dock and shit for like $1500 a month
There are even cheaper houses in the ghetto. talking about $60,000 for a house.
It really varies where you're looking. I live in Montgomery County, Maryland, and it can get pretty expensive.
3 bed 2 bath: $699,000

but the website I got that from might be bullshit, it says this is a 4 bedroom:

"This bedroom has an oven in it! And this one over here has a sink and a toilet, talk about convenience for those late night bathroom trips!"
some of those houses might be "bank-owned" because people couldnt afford to pay mortgages and the bank foreclosed them.
But not me, I'm doing just fine in my 4,000sqft home on long island
most foreclosed people are mexicans who sell drugs and live off welfare
Its all about location really. I live in a 2k sq. ft. home in a small town and its only around 139k.
Looks something like this:

Location and country matter.
Over here even a house in the "middle of nowhere" is roughly near another town. There ain't no space for cheap houses with large gardens. Just no space to afford that.

Uh...
Here in a more rural part of minnesota, my mom bought our house (4 bedroom, 2 floor + basement) for $40k, and it's on 3 acres of land too. The thing is it's a few miles out of town and in between some farming fields :v:. So yeah, it really really depends on location.
If you want to go stupid cheap in America, look at houses in Detroit.
well some of them at least
wow are you serious right now
DUDE, my neighbor is Canadian, they only live here in the winter though so we park in their driveway and use their pool without them knowing :v:
Who has a pool but only stays there in the winter... in Canada no less.
Something doesn't add up.
Its location and average income buddy.
You're comparing SUBURBS with city proper. A dingy one room studio apartment in chicago, costs $1,000 a month for just rent. Please note, thats in the actual ghetto, while its getting gentrified, you will hear gunshots at night, and will be mugged and beaten up often. You have no idea how expensive it is, to be poor.
also, minimum wage is $8 an hour, not counting our rising state tax, and a likely rising federal tax, along with all the other taxes.
American architects are color blind. The only colors they know how to use are browns and gray-scale.
well i'm pretty sure if you build(i mean not build yourself but get it built) your house you get to choose your color
we did but we went brown anyways because we didn't want to stick out too much
In my area in America a house like the American house in the OP will cost 2,000,000$
Check out housing in Orange County, CA. You might change your mind then
I live in New York City. Real estate prices here are absurdly high. You pay for convenience.
I'd be cheaper to build your own house with a bunch of East-Europeans.
Yeah but I wouldn't want to live in some lego house with 80 colors either, to be honest.
Our house in Norway cost a bit over $640,000, and that's in the most populated area of the city, so I guess it's about the same as in Australia.
Location matters a lot here though. The further away from populated areas the cheaper they get.

But the thing is, theres a lot less space in europe, and for this reason housing has traditionally been really expensive. Look at the size of Australia. This shouldn't be happening.
You must not have seen the housing in California, it's 800,000$+ for a condo in Pasadena.
Australia has a tendency to cost more because they're slightly cut off from building materials, like lumber, or other suitable objects.
