I gain no indie cred for it but

even if it's mainstream, still an awesome album, they never cease to impress me. it also works as good driving music.
Fire with Fire is also an amazing song (it's on this album).

"This is A Long Drive for Someone with Nothing to Think About"
Modest Mouse
Modest mouse's first album, and my favorite, is such pure indie rock, with the resonance of guitars and crashing drums each blast loudly, with a rush of emotions spewing out through to compliment the complex lyrics of Isaac Brock. Listening to this album takes you through many different emotions, and severe sadness and loneliness, but each song is amazing, and feels just right with each other.
Listen to this, and feel reborn.

Otis Redding Sings Soul
Soul doesn't get much deeper than that, and i'm not talking Barry White neither :smug:
I cant get over how such a great voice died young in a plane crash...aged 26. Fuck.. He made some great shit in his time though.

Most definitely has been suggested here. But it is a masterpiece... that isn't regarded as much as should nowadays.
Gorguts-Obscura
It's quite possibly the best album ever made. I can't describe why though. It just is what it is.

Its a glorious album... imo better than The Joshua Tree album. It is one of the greatest albums to come out of the 80s.

Ryoji Ikeda's Matrix and +/- . The first half of Matrix (for rooms) is sound art designed for playing in a room, not listening to on headphones, but .Matrix, the second part, is a brilliant glitch album, as is +/-. It's incredibly hypnotic yet interesting, really cool manipulation of small elements to make an overarching piece.
Interesting Xen, I'll give it a try.
Interesting Xen, I'll give it a try.
I'd suggest Matrix first, +/- can be a little monotonous and abrasive. Not to say it isn't good, but it's that kinda music you have to get used to first. There's also 0*C, which is equally good if even more difficult, if that's possible.
I'd suggest Matrix first, +/- can be a little monotonous and abrasive. Not to say it isn't good, but it's that kinda music you have to get used to first.
Guaranteed I've not listened to that kind of music. Microsound/Minimalism/Glitch stuff I mean.
Wish me luck :v:
I am braced.
Gl, you need it. Oh and headphones, that too. While i'm recommending minimalist things, i'll go to the root of the genre and recommend one of my favorite albums ever:

First really mainstream minimalist composition, disregarding In C and slightly earlier La Monte Young work, A Rainbow In Curved Air is fucking brilliant and that's all there really is to say.
EDIT:
So far its miles more soothing than Merzbow, unless you like Merzbow :ohdear:
Yup, though just somewhat. Merzbow can be a bit sterile, I like Incapacitants a lot more.
So far its miles more soothing than Merzbow, unless you like Merzbow :ohdear:
I'm not gonna be an ass and say "Merzbow is unbearable" but there is something there that is genius. I just think its time for me to acknowledge the noise genre as well as the minimalism, microsound genres. Or to put it short, the Japanese genres :v:

but yea, good headphones make this kinda music so much more amazing. You lose out on a ton of detail through speakers or bad headphones.
I'm not gonna be an ass and say "Merzbow is unbearable" but there is something there that is genius. I just think its time for me to acknowledge the noise genre.
It's an interesting genre, and there's certainly some stuff there worth listening to. If you want a good entry point, try 1930 or Merzbeat. 1930's just flat out one of his best albums, and Merzbeat is, as the name says, more rhythm and beat oriented. Still not easy listening, but not like Arijigoku or his harsh(er) works.
as well as the minimalism, microsound genres. Or to put it short, the Japanese genres
And so far as microsound goes, idk much else. Try Oval, specifically 94 Diskont. Oh, and if you want a really interesting mix of glitch and noise, listen to Otomo Yoshihide's Night Before The Death of the Sampling Virus. It's... fucked up, but good.
EDIT 20: You know, actually, I was just listening to +/- and it was a tad boring. After you're done with Matrix, maybe try Dataplex or 0°C instead. They're more complex works.

Great album. The friend who recommended it to me said it changed the way he thought about music altogether. Not sure if my ideas have changed since listening to it, but I can say that it's definitely a great album.
It's rock of some kind.
First track:

You should probably listen to it if you haven't already okay.

Vision Creation Newsun and Super AE by Boredoms. Two of the greatest psychedelic Noise Rock albums ever made by one of the greatest Noise Rock bands ever. Yamataka Eye is a musical god.

EPICA by Kamelot - Power Metal
2003
America
If you like metal you should check this out. This along with The Black Halo have been the peak of Kamelot's albums so far and are the reason they are my favourite band.
The albums follow a story loosely based on the Faust legend. The lyrics manage to tell the story and still be poetic at the same time.
The music itself is highly varied, each song has its own distinct sound and melody which drives it.
Roy Khan delivers an amazing vocal performance as well (he is a classically trained opera singer).

SIM CITY by Susumu Hirasawa - Electronic
1995
Japan
I'm not a fan of electronic music normally, I usually find it's all high bass and made for dancing. I make an exception for Susumu Hirasawa who is close behind Kamelot in my list of favourite musicians.
Susumu Hirasawa has released 13 albums since 1989, I love them all. I chose Sim City because it's a kind of all rounder, incorporating a mix of his moody slow songs and bizarre sounding heavier stuff.

:colbert:
But I have to agree, I went back and listened to it and goddamn it was good. First 10 tracks were really abrasive and glitchy and interesting but hard to listen to, then everything past Data.microhelix was awesome. Catchy and rhythmic in a weird way
That matrix album is awesome, also that terry riley album earlier is classic. A masterpiece :3:
Underoath's They're Only Chasing Safety album is great to me, just because it's a lot softer then their other albums
Glad you think so, and if you liked RICA, check this out: http://terryriley.net/audiofiles/RainbowRevisited_4_26_07.mp3
It's a live version of RICA with new material for the first 8 or so minutes, it's somehow better than RICA was originally. Also, you checked out any of the albums I rec'd you yet?
EDIT: Shitty quality though, sorry about that. Direct from Riley so not much I can do about it

Cristal: Glass Music Through The Ages, is, as the title says, a collection of music played on a glass armonica, backed up/mixed in with classical orchestras, opera singers, and the like. It's a lovely collection of music, and a pretty unique one. Glass armonica's have a pretty beautiful sound to them, and for something that supposedly drives people insane, it makes for a good album.
Can't find a sample from the album, but here's a good example of the sound. It's more subdued in the album, though
http://youtube.com/watch?v=_XPfoFZYso8
EDIT: Actually, more than the armonica:

Notice that the first song is "I don't wanna Die" and the last one is "ready to die".
perhaps it's more about accepting the inevitability of death
