Meh, similar this, similar that... Try new things :-)
At times these similar bands help me to find different genres. The latest example would be El-Ahrairah and from them I have wanted to check lighter noise music. I like more music then I actively listen to or seek out.
it's fun to dive deep into certain areas of music, you learn a lot more.
The style of music doesn't really bother me. If the recommendation is convincing, I'll throw it on.
I also think this is a truly great thread.

"The King is Dead" by The Decemberists
Hands down one of my favourite albums of all time. The King is Dead has much more of a "country twang" to it than The Decemberists' previous albums. Every single song is great. The tracks are upbeat and go-getting, then we are presented with "January Hymn" and "June Hymn."The BEST songs on the album, in my opinion, would be "Don't Carry it All," "Calamity Song," "Rox in the Box," "Down by the Water," and "This is Why We Fight." Truly an album of pure depth and old school Americana.

a haunting album from the darkest spot of Neil Young's loooooong career as a singer songwriter. Released in the mid-seventies, held back for a few years by the label because it just had no market ambition. Of course that's one of the things that made it great, the fact that such a big name in the folksy singer scene would make such a pure album that doesn't hold anything back. The history of this is plagued by heroin use, which killed Neil's friend Bruce (the character of the opening and closing song) and guitarist Dan Whitten, who's vocals appear on the live track Come on Baby Let's Go Downtown, an appearance that feels like there's a ghost on the album. It's a beautiful expression of greif. Also of note is the production, which is shaky and unprofessional sounding but as a result sounds very alive and passionate (compare that the Harvest, an album which sounds ridiculously stale and radio oriented). Awesome stuff.

after the label turned down Tonight's the Night, they set to work on a this album, which ended up being released first. The album has the same crude production and expressive playing, this time aided by lots and lots of Honey Slides, a sort of marijuana based drug. The album is basically a continuation of the thoughts and feelings expressed in the previous album, but with a much more nostalgic feel ("back in the old folky days; the air was magic when we played" goddamn) but also at times pretty dark.
So yea a couple of essential fucking albums.

Did I mention the media? Got a good mix of Hip-Hop, Electro and Rock from the media.
Great post there vagrant. I was just listening to Harvest today.
On The Beach is one of his very best imo.

Wolf Parade - Apologies to the Queen Mary
Decent indie rock, pretty similar to Modest Mouse.

I feel this thread might be better if it were sectioned out in genres, that way people would be able to navigate easier. I dunno.
FUCK YOU. YOU DONT UNDERSTAND. Go masturbate you'd understand.

Yes I do, I like Tyler The Creationist, but Death Grips are better. Trust me :)
No sir. Wolf Gang. Golf Wang. Triple Six. Overwhelms all other sterotypical musical thugs.

Stop being indoctrinated into this Wolf thing, find the way of the Death Grippin' madness and you'll see what you miss :smug:

What's your problem?
I think I've discovered an obscure soul classic...

1972 - What Color Is Love
Now, this is slightly jazz and folk oriented than a straight forward soul release like you'd hear from Marv or Steve.
Listen to these for a taste

Probably the best album by God Is An Astronaut, it has some of the sexiest melodies and song progression I've heard.

Oh yeah, Psychedelic Hip Hop?
This is pretty much what you need if you're interested. Gonjasufi's A Sufi and a Killer.
Great record, really interesting.

Some will give you Born To Run or Born in the USA... maybe even Nebraska... but this is his most accessible work imo. Everything here is full of heart and it's probably his greatest work. Very well produced too.
Start with this.
that Callier record sounds great
Distant relatives by Damian Marley and Nas:

Why? Because it's an awesome reggae album:

1968 - Silver Apples
"Proto-Punk"? or just something a lot ahead of its time. This is a pretty great psychedelic album, just two guys a drummer and a person operating oscillators. I don't think I've heard anything like this at all, even the vocals are just crazy.
Get this on your list.
that Callier record sounds great
Yeah I saw it recommended and he was convinced it was an obscure classic so I just threw it on. Great vibes it has.
Hit me with some of your favourite albums.

Cool, rating your own album. :v:
Also why did you format it in the MP4 format! It's now in 320 ready to play :smug:
Because it was orignally in 1411kbps audio after rendering uncompressed files, and each song was 200mb
I just wanted to press it and I know that a shitload of people have media players that can easily play it, particularly iTunes
