1973 - New York Dolls
Now don't let the cover deceive you, it's almost 40 years old. :v:
This was well ahead of the game at the time with Punk and Glam. This band put it's mark on the industry with its personality and grooves.
It's essential but I'd rather say it is something to discover rather than being blurted into everyone's faces.

Fucked Up - David Comes to Life
I saw this band supporting Foo Fighters a week ago, and promptly bought this album the following day because of how incredibly brilliant they were. I'm still wrapping my head around this album as the plot is ridiculously convoluted and hard to interpret, as far as I know it's about a factory worker named David who falls in love with a girl who he is then accused of murdering, and they planned to make a bomb, and David's still in love with his ex-girlfriend, and... I don't even know. I'm sure I'll figure it out eventually but in the meantime there is still the excellent musicality and uniqueness surrounding the whole album, it's like if Arcade Fire went hardcore or something. It's sitting somewhere in the middle of Indie Rock and Metalcore. Somehow they make it work. It's surprisingly great and they are quite probably the best "heavy" band I have ever heard. There is a beautiful irony between the sheer complexity of the music and the simplistic non-subtlety of the band's name.

XTC - Skylarking
Honestly, I know this is an album I will not get enough of. It's inspired by the psych pop greats of the 60s, e.g. Beach Boys, Beatles, Zombies.. and pretty much "Brought into" the eighties new wave era. It really works, and feels refreshing to this day.

*Shels - Plains of the Purple Buffalo
Genre/Description: Post-Rock with singing at times, native American imagery, small points
with sludge,
Plains of the Purple Buffalo is one of the most exciting and innovative Post-Rock albums I've
heard lately. The songs on the album aren't your normal "Tame build, tame build, tame build,
EXPLODE" for Post-Rock. The "build" for most of these songs is just as exciting and interesting
as the crescendos you'd find on other post-rock albums, and the climaxes to these builds are
epic
and booming.
Personally, I think this is the best example of Third-Wave Post-Rock (too much hyphening) and
I mean that by that it takes what was good about a band like Godspeed with it's beautiful interludes
and incredible adrenalin pumping endings and the evolution of keeping the listener's interest up
until the ending that bands like Mogwai have succeeded and bands like EITS have failed at.
The album is a whopping 78 minutes and there are very few times on it that are not a pleasure to
listen to. The song Wake is a little boring, and the lyrics on Conqueror in the beginning throw me off a bit
with "Salty tear water touches my skin...".
If you have the patience and interest, go right now and listen to this. It's an amazing album full of
adventure and emotion and a clear contender for album of the year.

I strongly suggest you search for Mux Mool on youtube if you haven't heard of him. Some notable tunes by him are "Breakfast Enthusiast", "Get Better John", "End Guy" and "Death 9000". The interesting thing about Mux Mool is that he makes an effort to use different sounds in each song he makes. He has a new album on the way. These 2 songs are taken from it.

Circa Survive - Blue Sky Noise
Genre: Post-Hardcore, Emo
This is probably my favorite record of 2010. It's kind of like that typical angsty-teenager record, but it has a very "wide-open" sound. I describe the "wide-open" sound as some sortof beautiful, fresh, open atmosphere you can kind of see in music, like the brightness of day. not enough artists have that kind of thing. this album, albeit not really a concept album, basically serves as a template for whatever the "unknown" may be, hence the album's name (blue sky) track through track you will find lyrics that can relate to either UFOs, hieroglyphics, abandoned places, disappearances, media coverups, ghosts, all masked by romantic or angsty lyrics. there aren't enough albums that are really creepy nowadays... and this, albeit not to a "Scott Walker" or a "Bedlam in Goliath" extent. is a really creepy record, but don't expect much weird shit in the sound besides the odd intermissions at the end of some points. it's just overall a beautiful, dramatic record that can appeal to both the progressive rock audience and the depressed-teenager audience. It's not necessarily a concept album because a percentage of lyrics aren't exactly about the paranormal/uninformed-about, and another amount are more personal to Anthony. it's kinda a half-concept album like The Crane Wife.

I love this band. They don't sound like generic post-hardcore (or even post-hardcore at all). They sound pretty unique, just dope all around. The singer's voice will definitely catch you by surprise, because he sounds like a Disney character, but once you get over that you'll enjoy them.

CHLLNGER - Haven - 2011
Genre: Garagey Dubstep (like Burial)
Don't let the artist name fool you (some hate it, but I'm just pointing it out) but this is a smooth take on what is soon to become a new age of dubstep.
Some didn't like Burial for being repetitive, but the only reason people found it boring was simply because they didn't like garage music. Dubstep is more about textures of electronic sounds creating an atmosphere.
It's definitely not as ambient as Burial, but very worthy all the same.
Grab it.

That is my only problem with the band.
I just can't get myself to like the singer.

Cat Power and Loren Connors - Live at the Tonic
bootleg recording of Cat Power playing with non other than prolific as fuck "outsider" musician Loren Connors! I always thought Cat sounded best when supported by two thirds of mellow aussie band Dirty Three, like on the Moon Pix album, but Loren Connors is also a great match. This collab sounds like a completely different stage of Cat's discography. Chan Marshall's singing is as whispered as ever on this recording and she's never played guitar with such a sparse minimalism before. Connors fills the emptiness with really great blues licks that sort of meander through without much direction. A very ghostly dry record that's great for cold evenings.
and I'm sorry the cover sucks so much.
just for the hell of it here's a proper Cat Power studio album which you should get if you haven't listened to her, instead some obscure bootleg

Cat Power - Moon Pix
Like I mentioned above, the guitarist and drummer from dirty three join her on this album, the first time "Cat Power" really referred to her and not her and the rest of the band, which was Steve Shelley and.. some dude. much more song-y than the above album, very sad and beautiful ;_;

Gotye - Making Mirrors (2011)
It's hard to explain this album because Gotye covers such a wide variety of genres, from indie pop to feel-good soul to Avalanches-style sampling, but it all comes together in DeBacker's most solid release yet. Somebody That I Used to Know has been a pretty huge hit here in Australia, dunno about the rest of the world though. Overall a very enjoyable and expansive album with a lot of variety and colour, I'd recommend it to pretty much everyone.

Submotion Orchestra - Finest Hour (2011)
A really beautifully executed jazz/trip-hop/post-dubstep/future garage album. Its hard to file this album under one single genre, it definitely has some future garage and dubstep influences, but to call this dubstep is just inaccurate. Alongside the awesome beats the main focus is the jazzy bits and beautiful vocals over the top of them with occasional string or piano melodies to create beautiful soundscapes. Its a hard album to describe so I just recommend checking it out for yourself. One of my favorites of 2011.

Janes Addiction - The Great Escape Artist
I think everybody had written them off but they came back with a more electronic driven sound that still had that rock element to it which gave it an edge without isolating the older fans. Underground was an album highlight when turned up. Red Hot Chili Peppers take note.

Nico - Desertshore
just in time for winter, some of the coldest and most beautiful music ever recorded. I can't really describe this album very well, but I just completely love it.

Victor Wooten, part of the virtuoso earth jazz band Bela Fleck and the Flecktones displays an introspective look into the passion of a real music genius.
With covers of Stevie Wonder songs to journeying originals A Show of Hands is perfect music so deftly executed that his methods should be questioned.
For a bonus watch any song live and realize that many songs are done in one take.

Bloodline's self titled album.
These guys are all famous people's children.(sans Joe Bonamassa).
Bloodline was a short-lived Bluesy-Southerny-Hard Rock band that formed and signed to Capitol in '94. The members of Bloodline were Erin Davis, the drummer (Miles Davis' son), rhythm guitarist Waylon Krieger (son of Robby Krieger), bassist and lead singer Berry Oakley Jr. (obviouslly son of Berry Oakley), and of course as he was billed, Smokin' Joe Bonamassa. Shortly after they released their album, and went on tour opening for Tesla and Skynyrd, they broke up.
As always with anything Joe Bonamassa is on, the guitar work is out of the world. Berry Jr.'s vocals come off as soul infused rock and sometimes have this genuine sleazy sound that works with the rest of the hard-hitting musicians. This album is severely forgotten as well as their band, I dunno why they split up though. They could've gone places if they stayed together, but obviously Joe Bonamassa is still making a damn good name for himself.
