used to hate this but now for some reason i love it, just as much as the first and third album. at first i thought there was no reason for sister ray to be a whole side of vinyl but now I just love it and wish it was longer.

Sountracks for the Blind by Swans
I can only describe this album as massive and draining.

Generation Terrorists by Manic Street Preachers.

It's just a brilliant album with a real sense of musicianship, also features - in my opinion - some of the best guitar of the 1990's. My favourite guitarist of the last twenty years, Richey Edwards (Extremely underrated)

Lou Reed, John Cale & Nico - Live at Bataclan
awesome live bootleg of the best ex-Velvets playing some old VU songs and their own solo pieces in unfamiliar arrangements. theres a great understated atmosphere hanging over this album that i really love.
Can't even begin to imagine what that sounds like.
i recommend one but not album http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e2BthbIMFp4

Give Rain Tree Crow and some Jansen Barbieri Karn a go, it was some of the best stuff coming from the 90's
I like Tin Drum a lot, but David Sylvian is a total asshole, one of the reasons the band broke up is because he got together with the bassist's ex girlfriend
Yeah Rain Tree Crow is superb. Different to Japan, but still brilliant.
Yeah, not surprised that Sylvian was a git. :v:

Folk(?)
Unlike anything I've ever heard. A sort of tribal folk, but is full of energy and lush instrumentation.
Freak Folk is the name for it.
Try Comus, they're amazing.
[editline]31st December 2011[/editline]
also Akron/Family.
I still don't really get what Freak Folk is.
Based on what I've heard it's like folk but... freaky? Like different or something?
It's a free expression kind of thing imo. Most of the "freak folk" I hear is kinda ritualistic.

Bastion's Soundtrack
One of the best games of the years soundtrack and it's just as good, if not better, than the game itself. It's slow, dark, and brooding in some respects. The songs each have their own uplifting tunes, but the overall theme is very dark and sad, befitting the games theme. Mixing acoustics with NiN-style ambience can be done right, it seems.

Band: Woods Of Ypres
Album: IV: The Green Album
Genre: Melodic Black/Doom Metal
Year: 2009
I was scrolling through a FB-page called "Doom Metal is the best music on Earth" one evening and suddenly saw this band. I found out that the vocalist, David Gold, had died in an car accident at 22 December. Of course, I decided to take a listen to see what had been lost...
The answer was: A huge lot.
I fell for the band instantly.

Debut album from Atlanta-based seven piece post-hardcore band. Lots of crunchy metal, lots of electronic spazziness, lots of heavy breakdowns, lots of R&B crooning, and lots of great melodies. Definitely recommend if you're into bands like Memphis May Fire and Emarosa.

Mercury Rev - Yerself is Steam
This album has some of the freshest ideas and makes me feel for it. It's like a narration you experience in real time. It's fantastic and not enough can be described about the intricate nature of Yerself is Steam.

Veronica Falls (2011)
This is an unexpectedly brilliant album, largely due to the uncanny contrast between its swooning vocals, extremely dark themes, and the overall just-for-fun attitude that it resonates. This is best seen in a song like Beachy Head, a fun, retro surf-pop track turned on its head by the fact that it's about jumping off a cliff and killing yourself. It gives the impression of being simplistic by being catchy and vibrant, but the song structures and themes are complex and ultimately deceiving. It's cute, sad, fun, fast and relaxed all at the same time.

Tycho - Dive
I listened to this and have to say it's not as good as Past is Prologue. It's a nice soothing album, but not as worthy as their previous work.

A really nice ambient-electronic album.
I also heard his new EP is great as well. Similar sound to the album, just a bit more "mature".
That album is damn good. Very fresh and soothing.
Sad that the album didn't get a lot of buzz though as compared to a lot of other releases last year.
True. I didn't expect it to be that creative.

Yeah I enjoyed Tycho - Dive, nice chilled out ambient music with some really beautiful tranquil soundscapes, but it didn't seem to progress or go anywhere, all the songs sounded very similar and tended to blend together and not in a very cohesive way just more in a predictable uninteresting kind of way.

Album: John Henry
Artist: They Might Be Giants
Genre: Alternative Rock
Year: 1994
They Might Be Giants are always hard to describe, but for this album, it's very dependant on the great horn section they use. It's one of my favourite albums of all time and really is a testament to alternative rock. There are a few tracks on it which, in my opinion, you might only like if you're already into They Might Be Giants and a there's few odd ones on it too (case in point, "O, Do Not Forsake Me", a Gregorian chant and ""Window", which is just weird).
