I have one cat, but I've been learning how to take care of reptiles and tropical fish for my job. It's pretty damn fun!
Used to have a tarantula, unfortunately she died of a bad molt some years ago. I've been wanting to get another one, but, I just don't know.

They're actually terrific pets for several reasons:
1) They're easy to care for (dependent on species, some have more specific humidity requirements than others (some up to 90%!!!)). You ensure they have a water dish they can't drown in, give them adequate bedding (many like to burrow), give them somewhere to hide (they're shy! they like dark places), ensure they can't climb too high in their cage (they're quite fragile, and will bust open like an over-ripe tomato if they fall from above certain heights, 6" is the max that most people suggest, an exception would be arboreal species as they live in trees but can still rupture if they fall from too high), ensure the humidity/temperature is within range (usually 50% but can vary with species, and room temp is perfect for them, they hate hot temperatures!), and toss them some crickets/roaches every so often and they're golden.
2) They don't make a mess. They're quite easy to clean up after, just think of it as a hamster with fangs. :v: The more difficult part of cleaning up after them is picking out the parts of whatever they didn't eat so you don't get mites in there (mites are bad).
3) They're quiet. There are some species that make noise, but generally only if you piss them off (Australia calls theirs "whistling spiders" because they'll make a hissing noise if you piss them off).
They're actually interesting to watch at times. I recall an instance where I was playing Fallout 3 and listening to Agatha's station while standing in a crater, where my geiger-counter was going off. I noticed movement from Lisa's enclosure (that was her name), and she crawled out from under her hide-out, crept over to the side of her enclosure that was closest to my speakers, and put all of the legs on one side of her body on the side, and just sat there. She sat there for quite some time as I observed, so I decided to try shutting the music off. Upon doing so, she sat there for about 5-10 seconds, then crawled back into her hide-out. Interesting stuff.
My niece and nephew loved to watch me feed her, too. Which is weird considering my sister raised them into fine upstanding arachnaphobes. :v: They'd both pile around the bookshelf that her enclosure was on as I dropped a cricket or two into her enclosure, and then jump, shriek, and giggle as she'd lunge out and grab the cricket(s) with a crunch!. :v:
I also caught one of these (solifugid or "camel spider") in my bath-tub, and captured it to show my niece and nephew, but it didn't last long in captivity sadly, despite adequate water and food (damn thing ate a cricket as big as it was, they're ferocious eaters :v:). It wasn't very large though, the leg-span just cleared the size of a quarter.

I hear they make good pets, but I don't know if I'd want to keep one permanently to be honest. They're fascinating creatures, but fucking hell are they ugly as sin. They have such interesting varieties, though, with vibrant colors and such (and still ugly as sin).
And up until recently I "had a dog" that was allegedly a Japanese Chin/Maltese/Papillon mix. My great-aunt decided she wanted a dog (she used to have a black Pomeranian she called "Stinkerbell"), and since they had to put her down (they were 18) she gets incredibly emotional every time she encounters a cute dog/puppy, so I guess she couldn't help herself when she saw this one at a local pet-store.
(photo pending, she has some but she hasn't uploaded them anywhere yet)
She wanted a Chin because she heard they were quiet dogs, but the Maltese/Papillon parts negated that I guess (plus she didn't do any real research into it, so that's on her), and the three breeds combined made for a VERY high energy dog. She was VERY playful, but also very rough, and my great-aunt (who has MS) and my grandmother (whom my great-aunt lives with currently and has a colostomy bag) didn't have the energy to match, so in the end I was the one who did most of the training/playing with her.
That dog was fucking NUTS. When she was excited, she transformed into an adorable furry bullet, hot-damn that dog could run. She had plenty of toys, but for some reason preferred rough-housing/playing with your hands, such a weird (but fun and awesome) dog. :v:
Sadly, for whatever reason, when I left after visiting the great-aunt/grand matriarch and playing with this pup (who was over a year old by this point), they tried to pick her up and she bit them. No idea why, she's never had a violent streak.
Thankfully, they gave her to a shelter (I would've gladly taken her, but my apartment isn't suitable for dogs, much less a high-energy breed like her (plus she liked to chew on plastic stuff, she partially ate the case for my copy of Guardians of the Galaxy that I lent my aunt, and my apartment has plenty of that)), and it wasn't long until she was adopted by a family that loves her to pieces. I do miss her, though.

Anyone have any info about getting a fox as a pet in California?
I ask because IIRC, ferrets are illegal in cali
I'd really love to get a fox though, but it's probs mad expensive, and possibly illegal here

The cat is down with a bowel infection and has to be force fed for a few days, the blood tests came out very good though so he'll be fine. Damn vets are expensive tho
Have him on antibiotics? Can't imagine the force feeding would be easy.

What do you guys think is better for a cat's health overall, inside-only, outside-only, or outside with the occasional night inside?
What do you guys think is better for a cat's health overall, inside-only, outside-only, or outside with the occasional night inside?
Inside, but with our cats sometimes if its a nice day we'll let them out for a bit and let them sun themselves.
We recently found three kittens hiding amongst the shelves and pallets in the warehouse at work. After many hours of coaxing, chasing, luring, grabbing, getting bit, and finally giving up and hauling in a live trap, we managed to catch them!

[t]http://imgur.com/e2SUFuH.jpg[/t]
[t]http://imgur.com/0snw38E.jpg[/t]
They are only about 12 weeks old, and it's good we caught them when we did! Assuming that they had escaped the warehouse before succumbing to dehydration, they would have likely become feral. They were already very aggressive/scared when we caught them, but they're still at the right age to properly socialize. After only a few days, the first two are already basically cool with people now. The third is a bit slower to warm up, but he'll get there!
I volunteer with an animal rescue, and I've fostered kittens before, so I'm taking care of these little guys until they're properly socialized and ready for adoption. We already found a sponsor rescue to foot the medical bills and such, so basically my job is just to play with them for two or three weeks.
They're in a pack-and-play crib right now, because we have to keep them separate from our other cat until their bloodwork checks out clean, but it's so small! I felt bad about them not having more space, and especially not having a separate area for the litterbox. So, I went out and bought some old kitchen cabinet base units from Craigslist, and am modifying them into a foster kitten playground and pen. We are basically going to have a constant rotation of foster cats and kittens here, so it is actually worth the effort.
I'll cut passthroughs between cabinet units, install latches on the cabinet doors, cut windows into the doors and side units, put in shelves and ramps so that the kittens and/or future mama cats can climb and lounge and such, a custom scratching post, toys, and a hammock.
It will be pretty goddamn cute. I've gotten a lot of the cutting done already, but still have a fair of deal of work to do. I'm hoping to do most of it this weekend, sans painting.
Sounds like bad genes unfortunately. Mental issues like anxiety are genetic, so it's important to research the family tree before choosing a puppy. Serious breeders, especially of working breeds, test their dogs' mental and physical health before breeding them. I personally wouldn't buy a puppy without thoroughly researching its pedigree, because I want a physically healthy and mentally stable dog.
Anxiety and fear are things that are hard to get rid of even with proper training and hard work, unfortunately. I hopes Cicero's issues aren't as serious as I've interpreted them and that your training pays off! Get help from an educated dogtrainer and stay clear of Cesar Millan's methods and I'm sure you'll be fine :)
Ironically, we chose our breeder very carefully for just this purpose. He has a thorough pedigree, and she was an ethical and responsible breeder. I think that this is a result of conditioning, not nature. If I'm being honest with myself, I guess I'd have to admit that he is probably as bad as he is because he's fed off my girlfriend's nervous energy. She has a severe anxiety disorder as well, and while she's made huge progress on it in the last couple of years with the help of therapy and medication, she's still often quite nervous. Especially when people come over.
This point was driven home last week. Emaline had several work friends come over for her birthday party. She moved an hour away from home to come live with me, and lost touch with her old friends, so she's never had any friends visit. Whenever any of my friends came over, she would usually get nervous and excuse herself after a bit. Cicero's reaction to company was always extreme. These are the first friends she's made since moving here to be with me, so this is the first time that people she was already comfortable with came by.
Anyway, her work friends come over, and instead of being nervous, Em was excited. I have never seen Cicero react to strangers the way he reacted to her friends. He was initially nervous, pacing and barking, but after a minute or two, he got excited as well! He actually started playing with them. He was all over them, rolling around, letting himself be pet! I've never seen him that way before.
So it's got to be Em. Every other time we've had people over, she's been nervous, he's been nervous. The first time we have people over that don't make her nervous, he's having a blast.
I think that, since he was a puppy, he's probably looked to her for cues on how to react to situations. It makes sense, she's been able to spend a lot more time with him than I have because of her job. So I'm really hoping that, once I leave my dayjob and have more time to spend with him, that I'll be able to turn him around by taking him out to public places more frequently. I doubt he'll ever be a very sociable dog with strangers, but I at least hope I can get him comfortable enough to only be a little bit nervous, instead of "shit myself" terrified.

She's a pitbull/something-or-other mix that was a "custody dog". Her previous owner is and will be in prison "for a long time" according to the Winnebago County Animal Services.
She's absolutely adorable and the sweetest thing ever. Unless you try to move her from her sleepyspots, in which she'll put all 68lbs of herself into passive resistance.
I got a phone call today from my Dad saying my cat Max had passed away. It was going to happen eventually, and I'm glad my parents were there with him. I just wish I could have seen him again

you're kidding me. My cat does exactly this. She goes apeshit over hair ties and will end up dumping it in her food dish until she has a collection of them.
