Our navy is so fucking huge.
I'm pretty sure that the smaller carriers (such as this) are known as "escort carriers". Which where developed by the Royal Navy during the Second World War, to save materials and time, we took old transport ships, stripped them off and turned them into small carriers, with the primary function of escorting the convoys across the Atlantic ocea, hence the name "escort carrier".

As stated, it's an amphibious assault ship, meant for staging and launching amphibious assaults. Escort carriers were phased out after WWII if I'm not mistaken.
