Why I have Never seeded my torrents from gmod, even if it is legal. And it makes playing all online games extremely laggy when I play if I'm seeding.
How do you stop seeding :V
Not that they even notice nor care.
Really? Because I was just sent an email as a warning...for the first time ever during my entire time with them.
Well, imagine if you're a game developer. You spend months developing a game people would like and succeeded. However, instead if buying your game, people download them illegally online. As a result, you are not getting a single cent from your game all because people download them illegally. RESPECT INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY! If you download illegally, you are throwing BULLSHIT at the guys who develop that software for you! Edit What, you still don't CARE! Fine, go ahead and download stuff for free! See what happens to the world economy. See what happens to you. See what happens when you accidentally download a spyware-cum-virus into your computer! Most pirated files have stealth viruses in them anyways
Even if you delete a program from the hard drive, it can still be retrieved even if it has been overwritten multiple times. On the bright side though, I hear they have excellent health care in Guantanimo Bay.
Do you sell your car every time someone says you may have been speeding?
that's completely different. if you're caught speeding, you get a fine, a slap on the wrist and some points on your license. you get caught doing shit stated in the OP, you could be in debt for your whole life/in prison.
After searching up some of this on my own, this is what I found.
You probably were reported to your Internet Service Provider by a watchdog group of some kind that monitors the Internet looking for illegal activity or someone downloading copyrighted material without permission. This group then reports the activity to the ISP providing the Internet access. ISP's generally get the complaints and do not seek out those downloading copyrighted material. The notice goes something like this The DMCA copyright infringement complaint below references an IP address assigned to your company. The infringing activity was detected on (date time stamp -UCT to the second) Please notify the person involved of the infringement. (Complaint is attached) After looking through their logs they can identify who was using that IP address at that time. The ISP then normally takes the complaint and sends it to the person involved. If you are caught again the ISP will again be notified and they WILL block you.
This seems to be what happened to me.
It's what you get for pirating honestly Sure most people get away with it but it looks like you're gonna be one of the examples EDIT: If you rate me disagree, you pirate all your games EDIT2: wow there's a lot of pirates on FP
That is the most disagrees that I have ever seen.
You'll be fine. I got the same thing from charter for downloading Photoshop CS4, Adobe Illustrator, and a bunch of music. They only caught me because I seeded the adobe torrent. So stop seeding for a while. They'll stop watching eventually. (User was banned for this post ("It's OK to talk about warez, but not OK to say that you have tatken part in actually pirating software" - verynicelady))
:irony: at name
A while back I made a thread along the lines of "What are the odds of getting caught with illegally downloaded stuff?" Well, jinx. My dad texted me today "Do you use a program called bit torrent?" I told him no, but that I used something similar. He told me to delete it because Verizon had contacted him and told him that he might be breaking the law, etc etc. I'm a bit scared because I don't know if he'll get sued and stuff. I deleted all of my p2p programs I have and I'm waiting 'til he comes home to see what happens. I'll be going to work so I won't answer or anything but, I thought they went mostly after uploaders rather than small downloaders? Also I haven't used it in like a three weeks or so.
You can't get sued for illegal torrents, only the ones who made them can get sued. You'll most likely get a fine for a large sum of money, not an appeal to sue. The reason for this is that because the person who is torrenting the intellectual property is infringing international copyright. That is grounds for trial, but, if your just the bystander downloading it, the company could care less about you and just fine you. Unless of course you appeal it when you get a fine. The logical path of action, don't download anymore illegal shit, like you said.
Perfect example of a retarded dumbass.
Rated you friendly. :keke:
That is the most disagrees that I have ever seen.
i know, i'm cool like that :frogc00l:
If they're monitoring your traffic, they're actually breaking the law by invading your privacy.
If they're monitoring your traffic, they're actually breaking the law by invading your privacy.
They're not. I believe the right term is 'honeypotted'. A 3rd party is watching the IPs of the torrent he's downloading and sends a complaint off to his ISP. His ISP, not wanting to be bothered by it anymore, relays the complaint to him and tells him whats what about the complaint.
I got a phone call from my ISP once I told them if they keep harassing me ill change service providers, haven't had a problem since, mind you I do live in Canada so non-profit Piracy is not illegal.
But p2p can also be used for legal stuff. Thank fuck I'm not in the U.S.A Verizon sound like the shittiest company ever!
You're fine. Happened to my brother too, and nothing happened to him. Just delete everything (or if you can, put it on discs and save it for some other time), programs included. It's cause you left the program running over a long period of time when you shouldn't have. Large download rates don't alarm ISPs because some people run businesses out of their homes or whatever. Large download rates are expected. It's the big upload rates, 'cause don't you think it would seem suspicious if someone uploaded a lot of information over a short period of time with no prior doing so? When they see you've uploaded a lot, they're going to look at what you uploaded. Then they'll see your download rate and they can look at that, they can look at the files of what you downloaded. Chances are you downloaded something along the lines of "[GameNameHere]SKIDROW-RIP" or "1080p-xvid-[MovieNameHere]". That's how they get you. From experience when torrenting shit, even if you say, "Hey fuck you don't let other people seed from me", it'll ignore it and let others leech off of you resulting in a high upload rate. Only download shit with torrents when you're watching over it, and turn it off when you have what you want.
Uhhhh What the?
Good thing I have an awesome ISP. ATT :downs: Also Concast sucks ass.
Uhhhh What the?
Woosh, 450 disagrees, damn we pirates, nasty.

Every day, for atleast 2-3 hours, the internet would go off. And at times DL speed would dip down to a few kilobytes at a time. It sucked ass. We called and complained alot. They sent like 5 guys, none of them knew what was wrong. So far no problem with ATT.
Obligatory.
Relevant
Actually, taking the plans to make that toy and then making it would be comparable to piracy. This is just sharing.
This thread comes after i may or may not have downloaded MOTORM4X
Updated with the information from the email I got. I don't wanna post the whole email though. After all it WAS a slap on the wrist. -edit- I was waiting for someone to post something along the lines of "OP hasn't responded... maybe his computer already got taken by the FBI" or something lol.
This would have been 10x funnier if the file downloaded said porn
Invasion of privacy.
Wrong. With almost all ISP's you agree that they have access to your internet history which is uploaded to their servers anyway.
I wish I could download a car.
your isp really really doesn't give a shit I promise
