I have faith you can quit, you can do it, don't give up, pyon!
I quit smoking 3 days ago, just try harder OP.
It's doable.
Coughing black shit up it seriously sounds like you may have bronchitis or some other type of lung sickness going on. I would see a doctor about that.
I've quit smoking a few times but i always come back, I've quit a few things successfully. Drinking, smoking weed but i can't seem to stop smoking cigarettes.
I don't know it's hard, but i know the few times i did quit (and months at a time even) i was just so tired of spending money and the bullshit involved (teeth, throat, coughing) that i just dropped it.
It sucks for the first few days (or maybe weeks depending on how long you've smoked, like you said) but once you're over the hump it should be a lot easier to avoid the temptation.
Step 1: Toss your ashtrays in the trash
Step 2: Take any cigarettes you do have and crush them up, throw them in the trash
Step 3: Tell whoever is smoking in your house to not fucking give you anything
These are powerful, mentally. Every time you are tempted to smoke just remember when you threw all that shit away and seriously consider what you're doing.
You will (like me) reluctantly choose not to do it and walk away. Play a game, tetris is nice for this sort of thing (stimulates the mind bro) or have something to eat (although don't try this all the time, seriously, you will be fat).
Find something to fill the void.
He could also try yoga, get a healthy body while learning how to relax better!
Well, I'm pretty much addicted to cigarettes, I didn't believe in addiction till I started, and boy was I wrong. I've had a sore throat for about 2 weeks now, I know it's from smoking. I also have some minor chest pain here and there, mostly when I lay on my sides. I cough up black fluids daily, I pretty much feel like death daily now, but even with all of this I can't seem to stop. I think about dying from it all the time but continue anyway. I want to quit, but there's a part of me that also doesn't. I was wondering what I could do without 'professional help' to quit, no patches, gum, or anything I have to use to quit. Maybe there's some sort of alternative to all of that? I wonder a lot if I'm just going to keep going till I die, it doesn't bother ME that much, but I don't want to put that on my family.
So if anyone has suggestions, post here.
Because of stuff like that I never started to smoke.
What a coincidence, I tried out my first smoke today.
It literally feels like you're sucking the smoke out of a burning roll of paper, didn't like it that much.
You should try occupying your time with something else other than smoking, suck on a lollipop or something.
Ehh I don't know much about it myself but my mom actually went to an acupuncturist to cure her smoking. She smoked for about 35ish years but she's been smoke-free since 2005. I don't have much faith in acupuncture myself but I can't deny it worked for my mom...
Try quit before that history of lung cancer catches up to ya. No matter how you do it.

It worked because she wanted it to. She didn't need the acupuncture at all, all it takes is a little mental discipline (and preferably some free time so you don't have to rage at your friends/colleagues over small things).
Thank God I was smart and never started smoking.
OP, if you're still having trouble, PM me.
I have first hand experience with dealing with addictions so uh, I'd like to help in any way I can.
(It's easier to help other people than help yourself when it comes to these kinds of things).
Hmm I see a lot of people here think that quiting is easy. I have not ever smoked but I know how hard it is to quit, It's just as hard as trying to floss everyday 3 times a day. Try it.

uhh
quitting smoking isn't hard
it's horrible torture
Listen, OP.
I smoked for several years, and quit due to the fact that it made me smell like a homeless person. The trick is substituting it with something else, preferably something with nicotine in it.
I use norwegian snus instead, look it up.
You have to be really strong. I never smoked, but I can imagine how hard it is to quit. As everyone says: your will power is what gets you through. You have to keep trying, and never quit no matter how hard it gets.
I absolutely fucking hate how virtually everyone on facepunch says "durrr just stop smoking its not hard lamo"
you people have no idea what addiction is and have no first hand experience.
Then why the fuck did you start with it in the first place?
Then why the fuck did you start with it in the first place?
Maybe because all the dumbshits going round saying how easy it is to quit convinced him it wouldn't be a problem.

Yes we do.
We are all addicted to masturbation :colbert:
When did Facepunch get this friendly?
Anyway, I can't speak on behalf of addiction to smoking, but I can speak on behalf of psychological addictions. I didn't stop sucking on my finger until I was 14. I only quit because I left my blanket at my father's for a week when I went to my mom's and I needed one with the other. It fucked with my ability to sleep, I became more anxious, and overall just restless. However, after the week (and 5 days) was up, I got my blanket back, but didn't need it as badly. Not to say that's how to break addiction, but just a thought. It somewhat goes back to Simmons' post, an isolation from it where you're physically not allowed to go near it and where no one will talk to you directly would probably do you quite a bit good, it's just not very feasible to do (I was on winterbreak from school at the time).
I still hopelessly chew the shit out of my nails though and have since I was two. I get aggressive when people fuck with me about it, they don't seem to understand how badly I need to do it.
Yes we do.

Perhaps, but Facepunch does to a lot of those "no fap _____" whatevers, which could motivate some people to ween themselves off of it slightly.
I quit a few months ago, if you are really determined to give it up you will.
Go on a vacation

never heard of someone quit in 3 days but ok
@OP ignore the anti-smoke dickheads.
I know alot of people have quit by toning down their smokes a day for example
Day 1: Smoke your usual ammount, for this sake, lets say you smoke 10 a day.
Day 2: Smoke 9
Day 3: Smoke 8
"" ""
Or option 2.
Try and force yourself to quit for about a week or 2 days or so and then smoke a few a day till you're ready to try again.
Make sure you're not trying to quit in a stressfull environment.

My chain smoking aunt tells me that apparently if you want to quit you have to very gradually and slowly cut down.
If my mum didn't quit smoking, I wouldn't be here, my dad HATES people smoking.
You should really quit, it's not impossible. Cigarettes just make you feel bad whenever you don't smoke them.
Best of luck OP.
I've been smoking a pack every 2 days for a few years, less before that, and I don't even cough when I wake up. I just sneeze sometimes.
I don't know, maybe the goo monster from Ferngully is living in my lungs waiting to make his appearance but so far I guess I'm pretty lucky.
go to rehab maybe?

three days isn't that long ago
there's still a good chance that you'll smoke again
three days isn't that long ago

You never really quit an addiction.
You abstain, but you fight the urges for the rest of your life.
Take your packs of cigarettes.
Put them on the ground.
Stomp the shit out of them for a good 2 minutes.
Throw them out.
Never buy more.
I know how extreme temptation can get to buy more, but I really urge you to do this as best you can. However, if you can't stop yourself from buying more, try doing it less and less every week. For example you could limit yourself to smoking 10 cigs a day for a week, then the next week it'd be 9 a day, then 8 and so on. It'd be slower, but it should make it significantly easier for the body to lose its addiction.
I've been smoking for 14-16 years now. I'm only 24.
Unless I understand this wrong are you implying you have been smoking since you were 8/10 years old?
