Risk is a game for those who are afraid to play a game that actually requires thinking.
Advanced Squad Leader takes a LOT of thinking - and The Longest Day also requires an incredible amount of foretought and planning (TLD games take several months to complete.. hope you have a lot of space on your table!).
I've found that Carcassonne, although a light game, can invoke a deal of incredible thinking. Do you hinder your opponent's cities, or do you lay down that tile in order to give you space to place knights in direct confrontation? So on and so forth.
Magic was pretty good, for a while. But it outdates itself so damned quickly that you'll find all your cards and decks are redundant within a few months - and as a result, it becomes a ridiculously expensive hobby trying to keep up with everyone else that you play with.
I really don't think Carcassone is that hard, I played it with my older brother and won just by placing monasteries or whatever they were called everywhere.

but my local realm has an extreme disdain for these games

Well maybe it's because people don't want to spend their money on small pieces of paper with drawings on it?
I learned my lesson from Pokemon, the only good card games are the ones played with a normal deck of cards.

Magic, like most card games, have to much luck involved for me to call them "smart" games. I think your right with chess though.
And portal, fuck most of those puzzles took me ages to figure out because I'm as dumb as a post. Most of the portal levels involved me looking them up on youtube after 30 minutes of playing with my dick.
