An hour is easy. You can give up anything for an hour.
A day? Different ball game.
Try lasting a day without internet! Obesity levels nose dive for a day
Once again this does more harm than good, i don't know why they keep doing this even if it is just a message since many people turning their power on at once just fucks over the grid making it worse.
The people who manage the grid tend to anticipate events like this. In the UK (and pretty much the UK alone!), every weekday usually around 6-7pm we have a massive spike in power consumption as a massive portion of the population switches the kettle on for a mug of tea before watching whatever's on telly, according to a documentary I watched a while back :v: the grid operators have to ship in extra power from France to deal with it. They can cope with massive peaks and dips in power demand. Plus everyone's not going to be in sync; clocks will be out by seconds, minutes, even hours, so everyone switching shit back on is over like a 10 minute period. Don't worry, we're not gonna be
No. Keeping them off for 1 hour won't change anything, so why bother?
Global electricity consumption (as of 2005), daily average: 2 Terawatts (official statistic might be a bit/a lot off [bigger] but it's still a huge amount)
Potential energy savings from switching everything off for an hour: 83,333 megawatts
I'd say that's changing something :v: plus it's raising awareness. I live in a small uni town which gets some of its energy from a wind farm on the mountains, but I'm not all uppity like mister "WHAT IF THE LOCAL SUPPLY IS ALREADY GREEN? TURN ALL YOUR SHIT ON YO" the point is to make people think.
What if we had an earth hour every day, anyway? That's 5% cut off annual consumption. What if we just switched shit off properly when sleeping (I know people who leave TVs on when sleeping 'because the static comforts them' and dumb shit like that)? 7 hours of no energy used - a metric megafuckton of energy saved.
"raise awareness"
everyone's already aware about the climate change. people just think that it either requires zero personal sacrifices (or minimal ones, like turning off your lights for one hour) or that some smart scientist guy will solve it in a few years. and some idiots choose not to believe in it.
Doesn't have to be about climate change, just showing how easy it is to be more conscientious about your power consumption, etc. etc.
Earth hour hits here in ~10 minutes, gonna go read a book under torchlight and drink a bottle of pear cider :)
I'm going to have everything plugged in and turned on for this hour instead because this is the stupidest idea ever and doesn't do shit
Uh, I forgot about this. Oh well.
Yeah, not only did I forget but I also genuinely need some electricity right now.
How about no
Ironically, I didn't even notice it was Earth Hour Day today. So you could say I didn't give a shit.
EARTH HOUR CHALLENGE MODE: Turn off not only all your lights and electronics, but also turn off your heating, your water supply, your fridge, and all of your clocks.
And oil and no candles or any form of heat.
[editline]26th March 2011[/editline]
and go outside
1. Has anybody found out if this causes stress on the power grid because of the unused power/massive suck after everybody turns their lights off?
2. I had a power outtage today in my neighborhood, I think the Earth hour ending cause it.
Cut off all power to the hospitals in honor of Earth Hour
Let's have a techno party right next to the people with candles.
We will play generic dubstep beats all night, have many subwoofers, big speakers, and lights EVERYWHERE!

This is what I did for earth hour.
Welp, time to go plug in all my christmas lights to get ready for "upstage the environmentalist hipsters hour"
Eh, had my power off for like a week from hurricanes.
That's enough Earth Hours for life.
I didn't realize today was earth hour until 30 minutes into the hour. So, instead of turning off everything I just switched to High Contrast mode on my computer then dimmed my screens even lower and set EPU to low power.
This is a bad idea for the elderly to try, if they shutoff all the lights in their home they could fall and hurt themselves and not be able to find a phone. Think about it.
Go camping: don't bother with earth hour.
Just destroy the fucking earth and move to the moon
It's not that goddamn hard to understand

yeah, except the moon has no fucking atmosphere

Wow. He is like Facepunch in a bucket. He looks like it too.
You're completely wrong, Cheese7.
I'm blonde and don't wear sweaters.
yeah, except the moon has no fucking atmosphere
Well, there exist a human-made object known as a "building"
Habitated buildings could be built on the moon...

You mean under the surface, right?
You mean under the surface, right?
Of course not, the buildings would be proof against poisonous gasses
why not just... always keep unessential lights turned off?
