so if i were to play xcom should i do it vanilla first or just go right in with long war? i generally don't buy into the whole "PLAY IT VANILLA FIRST THEN MOD IT" crowd. does long war actually make it more fun? or just more difficult for veterans?
I would say go Vanilla first, mostly because if you've never played it before- it is pretty damn easy to get lost or a little bit overwhelmed. Vanilla just introduces things at a MUCH more forgivable rate.

It does make the game more difficult, but in the right way in my opinion. It's just different in a lot of ways, including mechanics. For example, as shown in the video, Long War implements "fatigue" absent from original, it affects the game highly. I personally would suggest trying vanilla first, not because "bah bah you won't be able to appreciate the difference", but, as was already rightly said above my post, to get the hang of the gameplay, standard mechanics, tactics and all that stuff. XCOM:EU/EW is known to get very dull and kinda not fun in the endgame, so if you find it boring then and there - plug in Long War. Do yourself a favor though, if you decide to run vanilla first, download some reskins from Nexus, you'll get eyecandy soldiers and weapons instead of boring and kinda stupid basic color schemes.
Are achievements disabled with Long War installed?

It's also a HUGE pain in the ass to uninstall if you don't like it.
He completed AN Ironman Impossible in his spare time, I don't think he means the save he used for his series.
He also completed a run on http://www.twitch.tv/miss_jamball He plays xcom every thursday (which is today) at around 5-6 pm PST
Can anyone explain why his starting troops seemed to have custom names from other playthroughs?
All his default soldier names are drawn from a pool of names of people in Shacktac.
Are achievements disabled with Long War installed?
Nope, I started a game today and I was getting achievements.

But yeah, it's pretty claustrophobic. Especially as the game gets longer.

I think it's possible to start from previous save, as in, game won't crash immediately, but I think it'll break.
