Taking care of a hedgehog? Is that not too much work? I am pretty sure the hedgehog would like to live in a forest, instead of being trapped inside a house all day long.
Where I live in Canada, most hedgehogs are domesticated. But yeah, he's a lot more work than I thought he would be. Also he shits so much, and I'm not even joking. I could fertilize a farm with all of this poop. More pics and maybe a video in a few hours :3:
Taking care of a hedgehog? Is that not too much work? I am pretty sure the hedgehog would like to live in a forest, instead of being trapped inside a house all day long.
It's not too bad, I think I cleaned my hedgehog's cage twice a week which is basically putting in new shavings. At the end of each week I took the cage out back and hosed it down and dried it off just to keep it cleaner. While cleaning the cage I'd just leave my hedgehog in a pen thing I made outside (I'd obviously keep an eye on him). The nice thing about hedgehogs compared to pets like gerbils and hamsters is that you can have other pets like cats and dogs around them and they won't get attacked. My cats were actually really scared of my hedgehog, who had no idea and would always chase them down to sniff them.

-snip- I should read the first couple of posts.
I had one a while back. Was awesome.
Freeze it solid with liquid nitrogen and use it to clean your shoes with. Like a shoe brush.
Hedgehogs are illegal in California apparently :saddowns:
Don't they piss like hell? I've only seen 1 or 2 hedgehogs around here and whenever I do see them, the cat food around them always smells horribly because of their piss. Still, their so cute!
Hedgehogs are illegal in California apparently :saddowns:
This really confuses me, in the UK / Europe these are animals that are everywhere. What is the actual reason you can't keep them as pets?
Oh my god it's so fucking adorable
When I used to live in Southampton during the winter Hedgehogs used to hibernate behind some straw we had in there (I used to have a rabbit that died, and we ended up leaving the straw there, so that the hedgehogs had somewhere safe to hibernate) We also had foxes, and apparently badgers and bats. (I only saw the foxes :saddowns:) And it looks damn cute.
This really confuses me, in the UK / Europe these are animals that are everywhere. What is the actual reason you can't keep them as pets?
European hedgehogs are different than those like the OP has. It's illegal to domesticate wild animals almost everywhere anyway. If you see a wild African Pygmy hedgehog in the US or Canada, someone abandoned his pet in the wild or 2 abandoned hedgehogs got together :smith: Most of them won't survive the winter, they don't know how to properly hibernate (making reserves, finding a place to hibernate) since they're used to the hotter climate of Africa.
Now I want one hedgehog
I'm trying to take some more pictures and a video or something, since I've finally gotten it some new toys/aspen shit/wheel/proper cat food, but my cellphone is being dumb and says my SD Card is full.. So I'll just reformat my phone and hope it solves it :saddowns: ..
I used to have a hedgehog, but my mum ditched it when it pissed on her rug :frown:

Interesting to know that they can't hibernate well.
New pictures! Her pimped out crib; ( Althought I'm thinking I'm going to need to order her a better wheel; she likes using that one but I'm scared she's going to get caught in it :saddowns: ... Besides that; she has her small plate, her water bowl, her blanket which she snuggles under to sleep oh and in the corner; her shitter/pee-er! She also uses it correctly :buddy: Yes, she IS a ball of deadly spikes. Also, I'm uploading a small 4 minute video of her basically doing nothin' ... I guess she was camera shy. Usually she runs around, plays with her stuff. Key-times: 0:20 I scare her.. 1:00 I scare her again as I put my cellphone beside her :v: 2:00 She starts sniffing around. 3:00 She runs into her 'bed' and you can see her make her way under the small towel to go to sleep :3: Yeah, it's kind of boring but meh. Sorry! There! Sorry for the bad quality... :v:
these things are damn cute
Have you taken it to a vet yet?
No, I haven't

That wheel is dangerous for hedgehogs, get one for chinchillas with no holes in it and no bars. It needs to be closed on one side or it might get its nose caught in there while it runs. And you bought the same litter as I did for mine, same color everything :v: [editline]31st May 2011[/editline] You need a wheel like this, they make quite a lot of noise though so you might want to mod it with a metal bearing :v:
No, I haven't
Might want to do it soon as it was wild (or not and it could possibly have a tag implanted in it) and make sure it is ok and get anything it needs done
Might want to do it soon as it was wild (or not and it could possibly have a tag implanted in it) and make sure it is ok and get anything it needs done
It's certainly not wild. Those things don't live in Canada, they wouldn't be able to survive the winter anyway. It's probably an abandoned pet, if OP had not caught it, it'd be dead :smith:

I'll probably have to order something similiar online. The petshop here only had the one I had in my picture :v: ..
