Sounds muffled IMO and that static in the back sure sounds nice lol, don't really get what the big deal is
I still have this PC to play DOOM 2 on Floppys. It has some sort of built in speakers that play really low quality sounds, its pretty great. It sounds like this and the sound comes from the PC. been a long time since i've played hl1 but they don't sound like they have nearly as much reverb as they do on my modern computer its sort of sad in some ways that because the medium these games are played on constantly changes, some unnoticable changes can occure or the entire thing can be radically altered by the passage of time unless you have the right machine to run it like it "should" have been
I'd love to get an old machine like this just to play older games on it. Feels more genuine in a way.
My old PC used to be built out of scraps I collected from a computer recycling center. That thing was so much fun to play with.
This makes me even more excited to complete the old pc build i was working on. It has a VooDoo 3 3000 and an AMD Duron @ 600 Mhz, also a SoundBlaster Live! card. All i need is the case and such.
That's a really powerful system for the late 90's/early 2000's, though
it wasnt mine, but my familys and i think it was built for the company my mum worked for and then she bought it. I cant remember exactly when it was built but we got Unreal 1 with it.
Even back then half-life 1 only had a two second loading screen.
I wonder how long it would be on a raid0 pci-e SSD set up the screen would flash instantly to the next map :v:
too bad virtual surround "7.1" doesn't actually have a difference
I'm currently replaying HL1 and this demo sounds far worse than the game I played with just standard headphones. I think this fake surround stuff takes away from the experience. I can place sounds far better with just stereo, I find. [editline]17th December 2015[/editline]
Well, maybe. [editline]17th December 2015[/editline] This demo is acoustics only though. There are other demos out there that feature some other things, and not just with this system.
I think that as VR takes off, it it catches on, we're gonna see audio make large advances as people realize how integral it is to an immersive experience.
I think that as VR takes off, it it catches on, we're gonna see audio make large advances as people realize how integral it is to an immersive experience.
I don't know why a faux surround sound done with headphones wasn't done by now, but i guess VR pushing it will be better than none at all.
I wouldn't say they've "regressed" but I get what you mean. Half life 2 is another good example... I haven't seen another game come close to the level of facial animation that it had (Except maybe L.A. Noire, but that's sorta cheating)
I'd say regressed, for a long time PC games had A3D or HRTF supporting sound, now games just do shitty stereo panning. Guy did a good writeup on audio in current games: http://matthewkerswill.com/i-want-hrtfs-in-my-games/
I don't know why a faux surround sound done with headphones wasn't done by now, but i guess VR pushing it will be better than none at all.
Why do faux surround sound when you can use a proper HRTF? You only have two ears anyway.
or don't get headphones at all and get a real 5.1 surround setup
i have a 5.1 speaker system from 2007, but half of the speakers won't work anymore
Half-Life sounds really weird with A3D. It's way better in Unreal if you ask me.
I don't know why a faux surround sound done with headphones wasn't done by now, but i guess VR pushing it will be better than none at all.
People are working on special head and ear software models for stereo, for real-time binaural.
Man i feel old. I was only a kid when i first got a [sp]modified windows ME PC[/sp] with half life. it was majestic.
Considering the whole legal shit going on with that, I wonder if we'll ever be able to get anything like this at all at some point in the nearish future.
Can someone enlighten me, what is this "legal shit"?
Can someone enlighten me, what is this "legal shit"?
Creative owning a lot of patents and software related to 3d audio in games, and has sued before.
