Besdies, they were probably suffering money/production problems, like there not being enough material to build an engine from spending so much on a ship, or there not being enough time to build an engine due to the solar flares...
You'd think that when you're building a spaceship you'd build the engine first.
Is the Classic Dr. Who series worth watching? I enjoyed the last 4 seasons and the special 2009 episodes, the 2 seasons of torchwood and currently watching K9. So tell me facepunch, will I like the classic series? I don't give a shit about black and white, special effects, etc. I just wanna know, is it GOOD?
They vary, some are very good but some won't be to your taste due to the sheer number of episodes.
And apparently they had enough time to build a space-being torturing device and feeding system anyway. [editline]07:44PM[/editline] Broke my automerge :argh:

Sometimes the drama is kind of crushed by the silly visual effects, but it's all good. Genesis of the Daleks is a good place to start (imo).
What I didn't get is, if they were perfectly capable of catching a giant fucking Space Whale and tying it to a giant country-space-ship, why on earth couldn't they come up with something like an engine?
Didn't you listen to the story? They built the ship AROUND the whale and it was so easy because it came willingly to help the children! Thats why it kept on flying even after it had been tortured for so long - it was doing it all willingly. Humans were just bastards and thought they had to torture it :/
I love the sort of retro theme everything has now.
GUIDE FOR NU-WHO TO OLD-WHO Don't expect to jump straight into the classic series. Ever. If you are coming from Nu-Who to Old-Who you should be prepared for a big difference. 1) It's not an action Sure the new series has EXPLOSIONS and DARK THEMES but the classic series doesn't. Well it does. But they aren't as in your face. The classic series focuses on atmosphere and exploration. While the new series focuses on action and drama. Their are very small elements of action and drama in classic who. The most dramatic it get is when a companion leaves and the Doctor would get choked up. It was always a tear jerker. Action appears in episodes but it's small scale. The Doctor might challenge somebody to a karate duel and end it with a single blow after a huge build up, it looks silly and childish but the classic series takes it seriously which makes it look even sillier. That's the type of action you get. Short and cheap. But the focus isn't action. It's story. It's exploring this huge universe and learning about it. It's like a documentary in space with main characters and plot. It's interesting. Fun interesting. If the new series has an awful lot of running to do then the classic series has an awful lot of talking to do. 2) Parts Each Episode of doctor who is 20 - 25 minutes long. But the episodes usually come in parts. So you would have: Genesis of The Daleks Part 1 Genesis of The Daleks Part 2 Genesis of The Daleks Part 3 Genesis of The Daleks Part 4 Genesis of The Daleks Part 6 This means that their are a lot of epic cliff hangers. And a lot of nothing. These episodes were supposed to be viewed a week apart, if you watch them together you will probably most likely get tired. Each episode has a lot to take in and tell you and usually everything they say is important in some way. But the pacing... 3) Parts part 2 ...has to be recreated in each part. And you by now (being a Nu-Who fan) are so used to 45 minuite episodes. 6 20 minute episodes (120 minutes) can be a sharp learning curve. Remember that. By all means view all the parts together but remember that that's not how they were planned to be viewed. And don't leave it too long between parts and NEVER get distracted watching. So much information is forced into you, so many characters, places, plotlines. It will become all very hard to catch hold of if you get distracted. Don't turn your back. Don't look away. And don't blink. 4) It looked like crap back then too In the 60's and part of the 70's Doctor Who was marvellous. Best special effects on television. In the late 70's and 80's. The effects looked like crap. The budget was never given to the show BBC was too strict. Since the show started in the 60's BBC was convinced it was going to fail and as a result it had a terrible budget and no marketing. Nada. Maybe the odd Doctor Who lunch box but you didn't get action figures. Just books and lunch boxes. The point is BBC didn't care for Who, so if an effect looks crap or a set wobbles remember that this is all the charm of Doctor who. "The feet scuffling under the Daleks is what attracted the fans" Tom Baker once said. He's right. The shows cheap look is what made it so iconic. And it forces you to suspend your belief even more and enter this strange and beautiful universe. Where Daleks have shoes. The key rule of Nu-Who to Old-Who is STICK WITH IT. It might not be instant love. Just stick with it. It will come round. WHERE DO YOU WANT TO START? So now you know what to expect but the best idea is to just go experience it. Here are two episode of Doctor Who that I really enjoyed. BBC have uploaded them to Youtube in good quality in all their parts. Carnival of Monsters This episode is about the Third Doctor and Jo and once you get into it. It's brilliant. Context, this takes place just after The Doctor got his Tardis back. For the last few years The Doctor had been exiled to earth by the Time Lords and only allowed to use his Tardis in extreme emergencies. However he did a good thing and the time lords forgave him and gave him his wings back. Jo works for UNIT, or worked for UNIT. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ssB8-SvICWI The Masque of Mandragora Not much to say on this one. I liked it. One of my favourites. Sure it has flaws but even Blink has flaws. It opens with The Doctor and Sarah exploring The Tardis. They find a space console room and Tom Baker ends up using this console room for a good few more years. This one has some pretty great moments. One of my favourites is when they catch The Doctor and he reaches into his pocket and.. Well just wait and see. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HW9069C1F9A Here are some more episodes http://www.youtube.com/show/drwho ENJOY! (Also could this be put in the OP. That way if anybody asks again we can easy reference them :)) All this info come from me. As a Nu-Who fan moving into Old-Who. And I now love Old-Who to bits.

My opinion on the new series: It's alright. Too kid-friendly, though. [editline]10:18PM[/editline]
Which part of Billie Piper is the largest?
ahahaha Love screenwipe. Better than newswipe in my opinion.
My opinion on the new series: It's alright. They get bored from the talking or don't understand the implications of certain actions. [editline]10:50PM[/editline]
ahahaha Love screenwipe. The Children who watched old who have grown up into teens and are now all emos who like dark and depressing scary stuff.
The Children who watched old who have grown up into teens and are now all emos who like dark and depressing scary stuff.
Are you talking old Who 30 years ago or old Who in 2005? [editline]11:56PM[/editline] An interesting quote from Doctor Who Magazine about Churchill: [sp]Doctor: Listen to me. Just listen. The Daleks have no conscience, no soul, no pity. They are my oldest and deadliest enemy. You can't trust them Churchill: If Hitler invaded Hell, Doctor, I would give a favourable reference to The Devil. Those machines will be our salvation[/sp] Also both the Moff and the writer have insisted [sp]the Daleks will win at the end of this story[/sp] And I guess that means no more [sp]Daleks coming back from unavoidable death, that's supposed to be The Masters things[/sp]
Hmm, I spy a plot hole...In the first episode, when the Doctor is explaining the crack in the wall, he says that if you took down the wall the crack would remain as it is a crack in space and time, or something to that effect. So surely the crack on the giant space ship in the newest episode should have been left behind when the ship moved...?
Every one says the Daleks are going to win. That doesn't necessarily mean we are going to lose.
jack was a great character i hope moffat includes him in this series
I don't know if they can after [sp]that they hinted that he was the Face of Boe[/sp].
I don't know if they can after [sp]that they hinted that he was the Face of Boe[/sp].
How would that make any difference at all, he was in The Stolen Earth
Hmm, I spy a plot hole...In the first episode, when the Doctor is explaining the crack in the wall, he says that if you took down the wall the crack would remain as it is a crack in space and time, or something to that effect. You could say black holes are cracks in space and time. Yet they move. Maybe these cracks are movable or just hand around with the thing they originally attached to.
Are you talking old Who 30 years ago or old Who in 2005?
2005 who. I was like 10, I liked Chris because he spoke my accent, Tennant was just a great actor and I grew up with that. Then this guy comes along when I'm a slightly nerdy moshpit type person and the story is kinda dark, and the actor acts like he should be in a Tim Burton film. It's Paranormal Humour and because of how Who has evolved, I've grown to like whatever the show does.
How would that make any difference at all, he was in The Stolen Earth
Sorry, I guess that was one of the few episodes that weren't available on Netflix.
2005 who. Then this guy comes along when I'm a slightly nerdy moshpit type person and the story is kinda dark, and the actor acts like he should be in a Tim Burton film. But then I realised something key, something important, something The Moff said. When you watch Doctor Who you are a kid again. So the show doesn't grow with you, you grow to the show.

[editline]12:01PM[/editline] Frames of reference and so on.
What was the episode of the old series that took place entirely in the TARDIS? [editline]12:06PM[/editline] Never mind, seen it.
What was the episode of the old series that took place entirely in the TARDIS? [editline]12:06PM[/editline] Never mind, seen it.
Tell me :3:
I actually perfer the classic series of Doctor Who. The cheap effects within the episodes actually made it good fun to watch. I even perfer the old cybermen (The ones from the Tomb of the Cybermen) to the new.
I have the original series on DVD. I never really liked Doctor Who before the revival came about, but now that I'm older I can appriciate the little quirks and long storylines, though I admit it is pretty difficult to get into, and I certainly can't blame younger viewers not appriciating it. Hartnell is hillarious as the doctor for all the opposite reasons Tennant and Smith are, which is a good thing, it lets you see the linear passage of the doctors personalities.
