I think that I'm going to go against having 'italian restaurant' the biggest, because it really shouldn't be, despite their wishes.
idk, maybe I could do something more like this:

or I could go this route

Website mockup, just for fun

background image isn't mine but I imagine as an actual website it would fade between several different backgrounds
If you're gonna do mockups for websites THE FIRST THING you need is an actual purpose. You can't design a website and not really have a clear idea of what purpose it will serve. Beyond the whole bunch of pet peeves I have about the actual design of your mockup, this is perhaps the most important advice I can give you.

You're using perhaps 20% of your screen-space for actual content. Be wary of this.

I got my first major job which is basically redesigning a pre-made image hosting script that someone has, I'm not really sure what to quote them, so far I quoted roughly $100. Advice?
Why didn't I find this thread sooner?!

Semi-generic GIMP stuff

Generic manipulation. Edge detect an image of a sun, blat some words.

First one is very bland and doesn't really work as a logo. Most logos don't really have backgrounds, and without it, it is just outlined text.
Second one is the opposite. You can't read the first word and the second looks very unappealing/mspaint-like. It seems like you beveled the sun as well, and I don't quite understand why.
Do you guys prefer working on Photoshop or Illustrator? Unless you have some third program you use.

They're not really alternatives. You need them both for different things really.
The typical third Adobe program graphic designers use would be Indesign. It's used for page layouts, posters, and editorial stuff mainly.
And there's free, third party "knockoffs" of all those programs if you want to get a feel for what the purpose of each is.

lose the black lines. try to design things without any need for lines from the get go.

There's some weird ghosting from the resize. Obviously the colors need to be tweaked a bit to accommodate the new look... Maybe lose the shadow as well.
see how much better that looks
Does this count as Graphic Design?
A logo/drawing I made for someone who was creating a zombie game, don't think anything's come of it though'

I'm no graphic design buff, but I think slapping that text on there the way you did is sort of throwing the whole thing off. Maybe find a different, more full-bodied font and try to better integrate it into the image either by bringing parts of the zombie down into the text or finding a new place for it. I get the feeling that anything you can do to join the graphic and the text more would result in a better product.
He wanted it to be the image mainly, but as a last minute request he wanted text as well, so I didn't spend all that much time on it, I agree, it could be improved a lot.
damn thats nice.
my only criticism is that this part:

is kinda repetitive or something, not really sure what exactly, but another font might fit better
Thanks, I'll try to find another font for that part. I think you're right.

Something about the 'M' in "Rumba Presents" rubs me the wrong way, it looks pretty thin, maybe experiment with fonts a tad more?
