Any suggestions for starting out
Learn about typography if you are going to be using text a lot in designs. Not speaking of text effects here, but things like kerning, leading, and tracking. Maybe you already know about this stuff though.
Looking for a little advice.
Im trying to export an interactive PDF from indesign but the images always seem to export distorted, blurry or with extra pixels. Like so.

It does the same while exporting as a print pdf also.
Any tips?
first off, why does it need to be an interactive pdf, what's the nature of what you're designing?
a print pdf can be interactive and an interactive pdf can be sent to print. links and things will still work in almost any pdf (aside from maybe Smallest File Size) so your best bet will probably be to save it as a Press Quality pdf
the ^ there, is that the top of an A or something? i.e. type, or is it a vector image or something? either way somethings compressing something, so your best bet is to try Press Quality and see how that works out, it's the usual standard
A vintage kind of effect to the initials of my username I created awhile back.

I was initially saving it as an interactive PDF because it's a digital portfolio which i've been sending out to employers which includes links to my online portfolio to see more of each project.
I've tried saving it as a print PDF with press quality enabled but it seems to make no difference. Oddly enough though, i've just viewed the same PDF in google's online PDF viewer and it appears perfectly smooth, so i have no idea if its just adobe readers issue seeing as i've viewed the file on 2 different laptops and have been met with the same issue on both.
The 5 races / teams for a space card game I am working on. I was attempting to make each race as distinct from the next visually and verbally as possible. (Obviously some of the surface textures are a bit exaggerated, just my way of easily getting across what the race might be like. Prime is obviously computer / technology driven and based while K'Ordu is obviously kind of insect / hive like, etc.

Made this as a project for my digital design class
These feel kind of amateur, but I was attempting a minimal-style logo using my initials (WC). Any critique is appreciated.

id make everything fatter so the letters stand out more and ditch the rounding on the inside
I would pick the orange one simply because the values are terrible on the rest, you need more contrast. However, zing probably makes the most sense formally.
here's a mega quick and dirty one, probably need to still fix the values

If it counts I did some letter designs in my typography course.

For a button contest at my school - winner gets free concert tickets!
If this is highschool you're talking about, you win. If it's college, you've got solid odds.
Sadly it's college

Has anyone here used 99Designs? Worth it for some quick cash?

boo crowdsourcing
Has anyone here used 99Designs? Worth it for some quick cash?
Your chances of winning is small and everyone just copies the idea that gets the highest rating from the contest holder making your chance even smaller even when you come up with the idea everyone copies.
I participated in 11 contests with 27 total designs and won 1 contest and got into the finals with 2.
The amount of time you spend trying to win contest versus the time spent that you actually win is abysmal and very luck based, so it's not worth it for money.
I recommend 99designs as a way to keep yourself busy and find interesting briefs to work on. And then it doesn't hurt to submit whatever you make from it to the contest. It's more useful as an inspirational source during your free time than a way to earn money.
boo crowdsourcing
There is nothing wrong with crowdsourced design. The people that go to 99designs to get their design jobs done wouldn't give a reasonable price if they went up to a specific designer or company in the first place. Crowdsourced design is for all of those cheap clients that would be really hard to work with in the first place.
People that understand a bit more about design or have a proper marketing advisor (or something along those lines) see the value in approaching a company or specific freelancer and are more willing to pay a reasonable price.
Hey guys, super inexperienced fuckwad with photoshop over here. For a school (college) assignment, we're supposed to redesign this poster. Now, as bad as my attempt is, the rest of the class is going to be using MS Word to create their poster, so I'm not TOO worried. Just thought I'd get some input from you talented guys.
Here's the original poster:

And here's my rough draft WIP:

This is the first attempt at decent design for school i've ever tried. Also, the top bar is super wip/placeholder/ugly as all fuck, so i'm definitely open to suggestions on that :V figure i need to find a good font first of all
honestly the original is waaay more eye catching and nicer to look at, your version is probably going to make people's eyes glaze over because it's so plain and generic
try incorporating some of the ideas and themes from the original, it's not that bad of a design itself (apart from those ugly gears and misaligned/non-grid following text)

Well we're being graded on specific aspects that she pointed out as flawed in the original (i.e. too busy, too many colors, weird alignment and proximity), so I'm trying to stray from the original a decent amount. I'll definitely look back into it and see what I can pull out though. Thanks for the advice!
Just talked to the teacher and she said her only gripes were the alignment of the bars and if I'm going to use a new font for the title bar, I need to use that font again elsewhere in the document.
An update on that button contest... I lost to this
well if you plan on having more writing it'd be good to keep the font consistent, so you shouldn't be scared about re-using it
