What am i looking at here?
I think he meant holepunching the menu and using twine to bind it together

to be picky:
be consistent with your paragraph alignment. i.e your description under "about the chef" and the footnotes and basically everything else are left aligned/rag right while your description under the "sandwich" menu is centered

Looks like a single double sided page to me, but hey, throw twine all over that baby.
oh right. Double sided. nvm then :c

well that's generally how i've found menu sub wording to work
[editline]4th March 2014[/editline]
i guess it could look better with the chef bit centred though
Apparently this is a thing on 99designs as well, got it in my mail.

Although I honestly find it more insulting than flattering and it does almost give the feeling of an automated response (though it clearly isn't as I would have at least bumped into it more than this one incident).
Like, what? You found me (and probably some others) and specifically ask for my designs on your contest? In their minds it probably seems like a nice thing to say, to me it's just like "why the hell aren't you just hiring me for the job instead then?"
"I like what you do and I want to see your designs for my thing, but I want to pick it out from several other designs as well since I'm not sure if you can actually deliver"

Yup, that's how those sites breed bad client perceptions of the field and bad practice.
On another note, I just had a pretty good interview for a graphics position at an architecture firm for the summer. Hope I get it (though I wouldn't mind a break from school or work at this point).
Here are some the examples of work I showed (portfolio site is still slightly wip):

Guys when I make paths in Photoshop so far I've only been making them "closed loops". Now lets say I want to stroke a path that is not a "closed loopish" shape but something like a fish and its fins, how do I add anchor points that are not within the current "loop" but rather adding to it?

You can't add it directly to the path, but if you make a new shape you can select both layers and "merge shapes".

You could also use ctrl+shift on the multiple shape layers to make a big selection of all the shapes then stroke that. Otherwise I don't think photoshop strokes unclosed lines. pen tool, anchor points and line strokes etc are more of illustrator's job.
You can stroke unclosed lines
You can stroke unclosed lines
That's not what he meant.
He has the body of a bird and it's wings as two different paths, he wants to stroke them as one path, otherwise the wings would be stroked on the inside of the body, not just the outside where they extend out of it.
Oh yeah, I also forgot that his question is probably more about this:
You can add points to a path using the + icon on the pen tool, and then you can move the anchor points around with the white pointer.

But I do rather recommend using merge shapes as adding and editing anchor points is a bigger pain in the ass than drawing the new shapes you want to add and merge them. But obviously I do recommend using Illustrator or Flash instead to work with vector graphics as it's much easier.
you could use the body as a mask for the thing
This has all been very helpful, I got the stuff done.
Thank you!
Today me and my partner Chase (we've been working together for years now on design work professionally) got together, brainstormed, got lunch and came up with a re-branding for a local gun shop today. Couldn't do anything about their beyond generic name, but we wanted to make something recognizable and professional. After that we went ahead and threw the logo on some marketing materials to show them how it could be used. They want a total re-branding, and are rapidly growing and want to expand with new locations across the region.

Engraved into a glock slide cover plate, and silk screened onto a magazine butt plate. Also have it on AR15 dust covers and a ton of other things.
Tomorrow we've got a meeting with the client. Should go well. We already met with him previously and they are wanting a total web redesign as well, with an eCommerce site and that's right down our ally and so I think after we present them the logos they will be sold.
A little update, the company offered me a full time position after talking with them for a half hour about the design. Pretty interesting day!
The company wants to get into actual arms manufactering within the next two years. Very promising, and they have the money and backers to do it as well.
Congratulations, Ajacks!
Nice work buddy!
That's some real talent you have there :)
Hey, looking to hire a graphic designer for a small bit of work.
It's a logo and a few other small bits.
Feel free to drop me a PM with your price if you're interested.
Just an update, I'm meeting with the owners this upcoming week to discuss salary and terms. I've got a salary in mind and feeling good about that number with my previous meetings with them and discussing where they are, want to be and what they expect from the job. The guys at the shop are amazing as well. I was there for four hours today, and spent an entire hour helping with breaking down a M1919 308. machine gun just so one of the guys could show me literally what it took to machine it to function at semi auto instead of full auto. Just for kicks.
I decided to do a little logo design for my leather goods business before I get my website, leather stamps and rubber ink stamps for branding my products but I cant decide on which design looks better for my brand.
Simply the business name:

or this:

What do you guys think? I have a terrible eye for design and I cant decide if its actually alright and useable or if I should just cut my losses and see if somebody else can do it for me. Thoughts?
That's suppose to say Magpie, right?
The g and p looks weird when next together with this font. I suggest looking for another font in dafont.com
as for the Quality Goods, try using a sans-serif font and for it's location, maybe you can try to put it on top of the 'agpie' part of your logo just to see how it looks?
Or put it underneath like you have now, but have Quality on the left side and Goods on the right of your logo with the g and p of Magpie in between them. I hope that made sense.
I posted this in the Creative work thread, but it's probably better suited here:
Haven't been drawing stuff lately because I've been working on design stuff for Uni. I have to make a logo so I reinvented my crescent moon in Illustrator.
Here's what I have now, it's not vector based and you can see pixels when you zoom in:

and heres the new one (sorry about the border, I screencaped this using pussh):

I made it A LOT more simpler, while I like how the mesh-like shape of my old logo makes it look complex and grand, the newer one is easier and quicker to see, you can still see it's based off a crescent moon without struggling too much. simplifying it also makes it look "cuter" you could say. I also had to simplify it to make printing more easier, this is going on a business card.
The colours are more teal because this is for printing and I have to use Pantone colours (I could also easily print it in a mono colour if I wanted to).
What do you guys think? Anyone with printing experience here? this is for a project where I have to design and print a business card for myself using Offset Printing.
I definitely think that the second design is much more elegant, and has a lot more depth with the added gradient. It might just be me but I didn't get 'crescent moon' out of it until you mentioned it.
Last note, you should definitely make a mock up of the business card with the logo, since that might inspire more specific feedback on the design, based on how it interacts with the other elements of the card.
Sorry, you need to Log In to post a reply to this thread.
