By the way guys, still looking for a graphic designer to design us a logo.

I was tasked to create some logos for my youth group and I really need some typography/color theory lessons and anything else related to design.
Here's my first design:

I looked back on it an hour after making it and noticed how ugly and boring it is, but I still want to develop the concept of it further. They pitched it to me and what they suggested was kind of tacky. Our motto is "Connect Grow Change" and they wanted the first 'c' to be like a plug for an outlet or something and the 'g' was supposed to be a tree growing. I just took what they said and simplified it so it wouldn't be so complicated. I made all of the letters intertwined, and made the letters transition from dark to light, symbolizing spiritual change or something.
but it looks ugly and unrecognizable and i'm pretty sure i stole the design of the tron lightcycle.

I ended up making this instead cause they're going to be printing the design on a multitude of things and I wanted something that could be rescaled and recognizable, and not horribly generic looking.
They're giving me a month to do this I think, cause they're rolling out a website and I'm supposed to help with that too. I'm probably getting ahead of myself, but I have a good buddy who's going to be working with me, and he knows a lot about setting up web stuff. So far I've been having fun, and this is the first time I've actually made a logo. I'm using Flash and the basic shape tools to do all of this. I've been trying to get used to the pen tool, but it's not the same as the one I'm used to in photoshop. Is there a way to create a fill rather than a line?

Look into complementary colors, and basic color theories. Your logos aren't half bad as a start shape-wise, but the colors really are off and don't do it any justice.

sorry to say, but i think you made the wrong choice here. your original logo could've done with a little finessing, especially regarding colours like SweetSwifter said, but the design you have now is far, far more generic than your first. in fact it's not even generic, it's just nothing. it's 2 Cs aside a triangle thing and a G that's on fire (?) on top? they don't mean anything together, they don't link visually (aside from using the same font) and just, if you have a choice i would really change back your decision. work on it a little more and refine your first design, and you'll have something half unique that works nicely, not... ^ that

also if you want to make logos and stuff, try illustrator instead of flash
yeah I've been looking into illustrator and I'll probably pick it up soon. I used to think that flash was just some extension of illustrator and had all of the same capabilities for some reason.
I'm safe for now, nothing is finalized. We don't even have a theme fully fleshed out so I'm free to do whatever might work for the time being. The second logo was supposed to be like Jesus on the cross, which I guess I didn't make clear enough.

Does anyone know if its still possible to import vector shapes from flash CS6>illustrator CS6? I looked it up and apparently adobe removed our ability to do that.

I think you should work on making it more clear what the letters are, because currently it looks like CGG, but I'm totally not sure and it doesn't read very quickly at a glance.

It feels kinda flat. I'm going for a minimalist design but it still seems like I could make it more visually interesting through perhaps a better colour choice.
Some of the text is slightly misaligned but it isn't too noticeable in avatar size.

I'm really happy with them, I probably could have picked a better font but I spent like a week alone trying to find one I was happy enough with.
I only have one other problem:

I asked for a UV gloss coat to be put on so all the blue areas on the front are nice and shiny! Has a nice feel to it if your rub your fingers over it.

Nice one! I can't really tell from the photos (and being on phone) but there looks like a lot of colours there, did you go for regular offset in the end?
yeah just CMYK Ink, the only "spot colour" I used was the UV coat.
Out of interest, was this a decision you made yourself or did your school change their mind on what the brief was?

Need some criticism on a logo I'm working on. It's supposed to be a face with a tie, created with a X and a G. I tried to add hair and a beard, but I think it hide to much the X and is overall too heavy. I may be thinking about only keeping the figure.

To me I couldn't tell it was an x and a g until you mentioned it. I'd liked to follow up with some sort of suggestion but I am stumped, but yeah, that was my impression.
I didn't see the x and the g either, maybe look at the Rx logo?
I saw the G but not the X.
The best advice I can give for type is to avoid stacking it, it makes it harder to understand.
I'm looking for a font. It has a square looks to it, but it still has round corners. It's also a rather thick one, even when it's not bold. Something like this:

Thanks for the advices. I'll try to touch things up a bit and maybe post the results later on.
Vonz, maybe try quality over quantity. I'd trade one of Autumns design for any hundred of that awful mess.
