Have been playing with the pen tool today.
I know there are some small errors, sorryboutthat.
What do you think? Also, what do you thing of this image style (simple shaded vexel on red background), if you can call it that way..
i think you've done a good job. like you said, there are a few small errors, but for the most part you've covered the shape well and it's obvious what it is. i gather english isn't your first language but you meant to say vector, not vexel, and personally i like the style very much, but i do work with vectors every day so i might be a little biased.
the only thing i'd lose is the drop shadow behind the hand on the red, and probably the gradient on the red background - gradients can be used well but a lot of the time it cheapens the design. otherwise good work, keep it up!

Thanks lot :D. I'll work a bit more it. Well, you're right. I'm Polish, yet trying my best. As for the vector/vexel thing I wasn't really sure. Vexel from what I know is turning an image to vectors, and although most vexels look highly detailed I thought this one might count as well :P
vexel - a pixel based image that's been created in a vector style (i.e. simple shapes, limited colours usually)
vector - well, you know what that is

vexels seem pretty redundant to me, i don't really understand why you wouldn't just make it with vectors.

I understand now, thanks :)
Had some more fun with vectors today.

sorry for getting your hopes up w/o content
i'm dipping into a whole new medium: clothing
i'm assuming the best app to fuck about w/ for this would be illustrator; anyone have some neat resources or tips or anything?
thanks

probably a combination of illustrator and photoshop - illustrator for the designs and photoshop for the mockups/visualisations

Just a quick logo I was asked to do for someone's kickstarter, the game is at some point going to be like a village building / animal crossing / harvest moon LIKE thing with a cartoon style.
Was trying to make the "A's" seem like... a village I guess. He asked me on Wednesday and wanted it ready for Friday, so I would have liked to make it a bit more impressive and change a few things, but you do what you can.

I feel like it's on the threshold of working really well, it's still good to a layman like me but I think if you could have incorporated more perspective on the other letters you could have really made it feel like the logo was its own little village. Iunno, just spitballin.

I think you are right, and I really think there are a bunch of things to work out still, but that is where it was stopped. I'm sure we'll work on it more when the game is close to some kind of a release.
Some little chimneys on the As or something could sell them as houses, but it still looks pretty good imo.

DAMASCUS, May 2 (Xinhua) -- A ceasefire reportedly went into effect on Friday between the Syrian government troops and the armed rebels in the contested old quarter of the central city of Homs, Arab TV stations and activists said.
The ceasefire is part of a deal between the rebels and the government troops, under which the rebels would be allowed to leave their positions to areas in the northern countryside of Homs with their light weapons only within 24 hours.
The rebels have agreed upon the ceasefire following two weeks of heavy shelling by the government troops on the rebel-held districts in old Homs, which has been besieged by the latter since two years ago.
The Syrian army started a wide-scale offensive to wrest back control over the few remaining rebel-held districts in old Homs two weeks ago.
The ceasefire and the rebels' evacuation would be considered the latest victory of the Syrian army in Homs, allowing the Syrian troops to fully secure the city. Reports said that between 700 and 900 armed rebels, mostly Syrians, are stationing in old Homs.

InDesign can make websites. Does anyone have experience doing so?
Some things I did for fun / practice today. The first one is heavily inspired by some of the great stuff I've seen in this thread.

What do you guys think of the logo I drew and the design for this website? I tried to make the buttons look like leaves: www.wduwant.com

The site's about making trees consisting out of images or videos. Stuff like this:

Basically, anybody can grow a tree consisting of linked images, uploaded images, liked videos, or just text. It all depends on how creative a person is. I made it so that anybody can basically construct a tree and then send the tree as a link to someone else; there's also a tutorial i built in where a person can type in 'test' and it will provide interactive instructions.
Here's how an actual tree looks like: http://wduwant.com/prototype/tree/c367e13d05.php
What do you guys think of it from a design perspective? In particular, the lower blue bar menu (not all buttons are working yet)?

It looks okay so far but the entire concept just screams out 'Tumblr!'.
anyone have a good series of illustrator or more specifically tutorials for the pen tool?
i have no fucking clue how anyone could design anything with the clusterfuck that is the pen tool
Is there a specific level of quality you're aiming for? I've never used a tutorial but I don't really go past the 'pen tool' itself and the 'convert anchor point' tool.

Just try and trace things with the pen tool. It's super easy and I've never understood why people find it so hard.
You click at one point, then you click at another, you have now made a path, keep clicking and you will add detail to the path. If you click and drag you change the curve.
Now keep clicking until you're done creating the shape, with the final click being on the starting point. Voila, you've drawn with the pen tool. You can adjust your points afterwards with the white cursor and the submenu feature of the pen tool called the "convert anchor point", and you can add or delete points manually with the 2 other submenu features.
If you just, again, try and trace some images with it you'll get used to it really fast and you'll start wondering why you found it to be a problem in the first place.

understanding how it's going to react when i make a curve and stuff is just really unusual feeling to me. i don't know i guess i will just fuck around w/ it some thanks for the tracing tip
quality wise i mean i don't really give a shit as long as i kind of understand what is goin on

You learn how the curving works really fast as you try and trace and get the shape right. As you get competent with the pen tool you also learn when a curve is good enough and you can just go over it afterwards to change how the curve is, rather than trying to get everything perfect when first making it.
For example you might need a really long curvature for one point, but it fucks up the curve on the next point, but as you'll figure out that's ok when you're making it because you can fix it afterwards.
also keyboard shortcuts will help speed you up considerably!
p is the Pen Tool (funnily enough)
+ is adding anchor points
- is minusing anchor points
shift + c is convert anchor point
there's also some playing around required to converting anchor points when you're not given any handles, i normally click on the anchor with shift + c (a single click on an anchor will remove any constraints on it and give you two handles, each for one side of the anchor), then i ctrl + z to undo removing any constraints BUT keeping the handles visible, so now you can just drag the handles to however you want your line set up.
sorry if that doesn't make any sense, i tried taking some screenshots but that just made it more confusing. like dgg said it's really something that you can only pick up by doing, so just keep playing around and hopefully you'll start to pick it up. i'd recommend trying to trace (NOT livetrace!) some shapes rather than just aimlessly drawing shapes, maybe something like this could be a nice little challenge. if you want any more help or have more questions add me on steam if you like, i'm not often on but i use illustrator 9-5 every day so i should be able to help you, or push you in the right direction at least, i'm still learning every single day but i'll do my best to help! :)

^ and this is very very important. just make sure you have the anchors in the right place and the rest can all be altered afterwards, you cannot make something perfect first time.

you'll want to get into the practise of creating only horizontal or vertical lines with the tool, to create smooth and clean bezier markup.
i think once you understand how the tool works its easy to respect it and make it produce what you want
http://learn.scannerlicker.net/2014/04/16/bezier-curves-and-type-design-a-tutorial/
http://theagsc.com/community/tutorials/so-whats-the-big-deal-with-horizontal-vertical-bezier-handles-anyway
i use it mostly for typo but its the same principle, hopefully these articles are of use
