The M and W stacked is very common, and without a break between it just comes off as an odd double diamond, to me and people I've shown there seems to be a gain in recognition of the M and W when the M is solid. Here was a sheet of potentials I had thrown together prior. [t]http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a345/ajackss/desiings_zps81b8d982.jpg[/t]

You could also add a brighter colour to the M itself while keeping the shadow more neutral(or keep the M black and the shadow gray).
[t]https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/7346219/scoperksfin.jpg[/t] Just designed this for someone in the office next to mine; he p much told me exactly what he wanted he just wasn't able to execute it. It's really difficult to get the sweet spot with complexity and readability when it's shrunk right down (on the website it's going to be 39px tall fffffff). [editline]6th July 2014[/editline] It's a price comparison site btw
I like the look, nice typography. I don't know if that's your finalized logo or if you wanted input on it but I thought it might be interesting to see how it looked with increased perspective on the bag. [t]http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a345/ajackss/sco_perks_zpsde0218e4.png[/t] 39px,
I actually prefer that a lot, but unfortunately the website already has a lot of graphics and they're all super straight with all parallel lines. beta.scoperks.com If my client wants to see any variations I'll ask him how flexible he is with the parallel lines :)
That's a nice looking site.
That's a nice looking site.
It's a wordpress looking site.
It's a wordpress looking site.
Somehow I managed not to even scroll down, I thought it was just a google style search bar only site. That might actually be a better user experience, keep it ultra simple.
Yeah imo it'd be a lot nicer if it were just the top segment but I guess parallax landing pages are all the rage at the moment. I liked them at first but they are getting a little tiresome.
This is not my strong, suggestions on how to improve this?
This is not my strong, suggestions on how to improve this?
Because you have so much information you have to show, simplifying would go a long way to improving readability. Maybe use only a specific small set of effects, don't try to add eye-candy to everything, only to the most important things on the screen. The ping/lvl/etc on top of the table doesn't need gradients. Your banner/logo would look pretty great even without the inner glow effect on everything, just plain colours. You could probably make the special user coloured bars have a more subtle gradient(by using less contrasting or closer together colours, maybe even just leave them a plain colour. The secondary text below the username could be smaller, thinner (or the primary text bolder) as to not compete with the names.Same with the player/EVIP text next to each user. The username should be the most highlighted IMO. The user avatars could be a little smaller to leave a bezel between multiple users and separate them better.
Nothing special [t]http://i.imgur.com/KW3UZAO.png[/t] MAXON: C4D R18 Broadcast Adobe: Illustrator CS6, Photoshop CS6 I allways create stuff as fast as I can, this took 1h 43m
What do those logos represent, I don't recognize anything. Maybe the second one as C4D. I haven't heard before of making logos before the purpose of the logo is known.
Ughh. Two revisions and countless shitty instagram screen-caps later
I think you need to tone down those drop shadow effects, they're too big/blurry and make the poster colours look dirty because of the neutral grey. Maybe make them smaller/less dispersed, set them to multiply or play around with the blend mode? Also play with font size, most of the text is around the same size, add more emphasis. Is the presenter more important than the event? The bright pink emphasizes them too, maybe use the pink on the event title rather? does that top text use a different font from the other 2 I see? Why? Too many fonts without a specific purpose is pointless/confusing as it may apply emphasis on things you probably didn't intend to highlight too much. Did you apply some kind of mosaic filter on the bottom photos? I can understand if they gave some shitty quality photos but it isn't the best solution, even some type of blur would probably work.
Well there is speculative graphic design work, where the person creates a brand and then puts it up for sale as a complete package. I don't think it is super common or popular though as it isn't designed FOR the client. [editline]2nd August 2014[/editline]
Ughh. Two revisions and countless shitty instagram screen-caps later
It is rather busy looking, I think just because of how many bright colours and images there are. Not sure if that is you trying to follow client demands or not. Either way, my 2 cents: - No clear focal point, all the elements feel like they are competing. - Hierarchy could be improved. IMO, the name of the workshop and the info required to go, the 1st three lines of text (especially the date and time), should be the biggest instead of "Got Natural" presents. - With a poster you should divide info into distances. What you want them to see from a far distance that will draw them in / get them interested (buzz word, interesting image, etc), what you want them to see from a medium distance (necessary info: name of event, required info to go), what you want them to see from up close if they are interested enough to keep reading (supplementary info). - Try to think legibility, balance, and negative space. The bottom is very heavy with content at the moment. I might start by taking out the 2 white vertical bands on the edges, and maybe the green diagonal lines as well. Then I would probably try to re-prioritize the text, making the name of the event, location, and time the largest and brightest text and just have "presented by Got Natural?" as a smaller sub-header. Also, I would make the supplementary text a bit easier to read, it is the stuff they read up close I know, but looking at the thumbnail it could definitely be a bit more legible. Hopefully these comments help a bit, I'm not an expert, but I have had to do a bunch of presentation boards / posters for architecture project competitions and have been told that the board design was the reason I was short-listed.

Then as they grow bigger and actually have value they start seeing the value in proper branding as well. 99designs has their own section for pre-made designs that people can buy and use.

If you are good, it isn't unbelievable to sell a holistic brand package for a couple grand.
awesome post
Thanks for all the feedback, I really appreciate it  This web flyer was a product of doing three completely unique designs, the first two getting trashed and making a third as loud and obnoxious as the customer kept asking for. Her original words were 'Something modern and trendy but professional' and this is what she approved. Go figure. I am trying my best to improve on my design skills, but clients just have no idea what works. I'm learning it's best to just feed them what them want in a timely fashion :v: [editline]3rd August 2014[/editline] Then again, getting orders like this doesnt help Fuck customers in general
Fuck customers in general
I hear ya. I think though that it is our jobs as designers to show them the light. Obviously you have to give them something they are happy with, but they are paying us to make something good. So there needs to be some push back from us. Not always easy though I know. I've been lucky to have a tonne of clients that just kind of take what I give them. This can be really nice, but at the same time I've sometimes been disappointed because I feel like I'm missing out on an opportunity to learn / get experience from more back and forth with the client.
Yeah when a client wants something that doesn't work, the best thing is to show them and explain to them why it doesn't work. Don't give them something you know sucks. That's a waste of their time and money. Anyways, I haven't posted anything in here in like a year, but I thought I would for the hell of it. So here's some advertising stuff I did for McDonald's. Guys, I have been doing amateur Graphic Design for ages helping out charaties etc so I'm still such a nooby noob on the technical side of things, I will divulge some work later and properly contibute but i need some help. I am creating a banner the width of a road for a street party, but I don't understand the Pixel/Inches thing. I normally use 300dpi for A2 (posters etc) and below but for something this size the file begins at like 2.9Gb, which I have HD space for but I feel stupid, like I am missing something. File sizes have always been a mystery to me. Anyone help?

That was the process with the billboard I posted above.
Ok thanks, good idea. I have only ever done this stuff for free, and it's always been for my Dad when he hosts local events and gigs. This particular poster required a lot more info so it is quite crammed, and it isn't finished yet but it isn't far. Please don't laugh... Does anyone have any physical book recommendations for either graphic design or colour theory?
Does anyone have any physical book recommendations for either graphic design or colour theory?
http://www.vignelli.com/canon.pdf have you checked this out?
Hey. I already posted this in the Creative Work That Doesn't Deserve a Thread thread, but I see now it's probably more suited for over here. I'll quote myself below.
Hello! I've been trying to learn photoshop lately and so I've been making a bunch of (generally pretty shitty) posters. This is the first I've done that I'm even remotely proud of, so I'd love if you could tell me what's wrong with it. [t]http://i.imgur.com/9gLTmiz.jpg?1[/t] It's inspired by that scene where the cat looks at Brett getting eaten. I had the 'In space, no one can hear you scream' line above the title, but somehow that made it look like the cat was the alien. Anyway, feel free to tear it apart, I'd love to learn.

Does anyone have any physical book recommendations for either graphic design or colour theory?
that's kind of a broad scope of what you're looking for. Contemporary or historical? Design as a whole, or specific realms within (typography, form, image, grids, etc)? Specific micro or macro aspects of the discipline? For starters I'd recommend Megg's History of Graphic Design. For delving deeper into the discipline and getting maybe a bit more conceptual, check out books by Ellen Lupton. For a little broader of a scope within her, I'd look at Mixing Messages. Another great book from her is Thinking with Type. I don't know if this is the right thread to ask, but does anyone happen to know what font this is?
Tried to use whatthefont on it, didn't work.
Made this for a mod I'm working on. Too lazy to write it in the UI, yet know a bit gd, so thought it would be a good idea. Now gotta distort it to make it look more real-poster like. What do you think? [t]https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/69842270/x/wsad.jpg[/t]
