Made this for a mod I'm working on. Too lazy to write it in the UI, yet know a bit gd, so thought it would be a good idea. Now gotta distort it to make it look more real-poster like. What do you think? [t]https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/69842270/x/wsad.jpg[/t]
I find it pretty confusing and basically hard to read, probably because of the really long distance between the shadows and text. Also seems odd how the text goes out of the black border? Perhaps even redo it entirely because to my eyes it seems very messy and unorganized. Im no designer tho, so someone else might have something different to say.

The purpose here is just to inform the player that you Walk with WSAD. You see the poster as soon as the elevator doors open (the player spawns inside). I actually kinda like how the text goes out of border. Makes it visually bigger imo :P [editline]6th September 2014[/editline] It's uncategorized because it's for a battle of bands. Those things usually look crazy. ps. not trying to defend anything, just pointing stuff out.
I don't do graphic design work for a living, but my colleges STEM group needed a logo that wasn't [t]http://www.unf.edu/uploadedImages/sa/housing/llc/STEM.jpg[/t] I made an attempt. Do you guys have any pointers where I could improve?
Does anyone have any physical book recommendations for either graphic design or colour theory?
Know Your Onions is a great introduction book to graphic design, no bumf, just nice to-the-point content. it's cheap too! Type Matters should be your first stop for typography, it's a lovely little book (bound with a leather cover like a moleskine and reading ribbon) How To Be A Graphic Designer Without Losing Your Soul is one i haven't yet found the time to properly get off the shelf, i believe it's more wordy and more about how to progress as a graphic designer instead of flat out technical skill information, but it's always been very highly recommended by all i've met. so maybe not one for now but possibly in the future! as for colour, Colour Design Workbook is again, recommended as a top read for this subject. i don't yet own it so i can't speak from personal experience but to the best of my knowledge it's the cornerstone book for colour theory. hope this was helpful!
I would suggest a couple things. - More margin space, I always have felt that for the most part, if your poster is going to be mainly type, than treat it like the focus of the paper and compose in a way that it can really breathe on the paper. - Introduce a third colour, non-blue, as a highlite / accent, or maybe as geometric elements supplementing the text (ie. overlines, underlines, boxes, etc) - Make the "Melhore Seu Ingles" part flashier than the rest as it is the part that will draw people in to read the other details. - Introduce different varieties of the font family, or potentially another font family. Such as light variants or italics. Too much bold right now in my opinion. I've also recently been on a lower-case kick. Try using ALL-CAPS a bit more sparingly. - Throw a background texture / pattern in? This one I'm not sure about, but might be worth a shot, just something to make it a little less plain in its current state. - Maybe construct the type? As in, either produce it physically and photograph it (which can turn out really good sometimes) or maybe if it is just a poster with only letters than give those letters some extra attention, don't be afraid to add or subtract from the font or add your own stylistic touches to it. (Break the letters up with lines, or strategically remove parts, or lay the letters out in a way that they compose a greater image subtly, etc) Extreme example, but something in this mind-set: [t]http://media.typographicposters.com/staynice/l/breda-beats-after-party.jpg[/t] - Inspiration:http://www.typographicposters.com (Hopefully it inspires you or at least makes you second guess some things you have done in a healthy way). Hope some of these suggestions help, I've struggled with the same issue countless times. (Also, I saw that you posted in Creationism Corner as well saying that this thread isn't very active. True, not much posting going on here, but I check it usually once a day and if I see something I might be able to help with I'll try.)
images
Care to give us some context? Or is it just random practice stuff?
Care to give us some context? Or is it just random practice stuff?
Just a bunch of backgrounds I made recently
is this a step in the right direction?
Yes definitely, but I'm not sure I like the border very much That's just my personal opinion though. doesn't mean it's wrong
have a smaller border? that one is pretty thick
im not sure about the border either, but without it feels a bit too loose imo will keep trying, updating if anything meaningful happens thanks!
So much better already, good work. In terms of the border, I like the reasoning for putting it there, but I have a suggestion. Try laying out the poster using a rigid and more obvious grid system this will already help a lot. Then instead of using a border, have blocks or lines of the colour visibly delineating the grid and visibly anchoring the content to it, kind of like a bullet in a bullet list... But more fancy. I'll try to find an example. [t]http://museumsandtheweb.com/files/images/gipson-fig1.preview.jpg[/t] The lines don't have to be like this poster obviously, just showing the concept.
I don't know if this is the right thread to ask, but does anyone happen to know what font this is?
decided to ask the creators of QBEH-1 (the game this font is used in) this is it: http://www.dafont.com/kelvetica.font
Is this the place for posters, book covers, etc ? I've started doing a bunch of mock covers for training and I don't know if I should post it in here or in the other random work thread.
Go for it!
Well in that case, here's an example. Book's about an inquisitorial group in a post-apocalyptic/sci-fi/fantasy universe that worships the sun as their true god and burns people alive to cleanse them. And they're the good guys :v:
I'm currently working with a developer to create a mobile app. However I need someone to help with design / graphics. If you do help I have no problem paying out. Can't be too specific but if you're interested and you think you're capable then give me a PM and we can have a chat.

Only thing I would suggest would be to give the pictures and the title a bit more breathing space, bigger margins.
i'm trying to make a logo for myself but i can't settle on one, so I really need a second opinion. i have gone through so many of these: some advice would be appreciated. i'm trying to go for that minimal look.
You should really do something with a tentacle suction cup somehow. Maybe... I don't know. -- Map I made for my DND group: [t]http://www.kenoncreative.com/images/MAP.jpg[/t] Some of the colours got messed up when I uploaded it, but it's pretty much it.
Speaking of maps, I made that a while back. Same universe as the story from that book cover up there. [t]http://i.imgur.com/FpaIVeo.jpg[/t]
original tweaked Which is a bigger sin, odd alignment or bad kerning?
Which is a bigger sin, odd alignment or bad kerning?
With a font like that, definitely bad kerning
Alignment can be forgiven since it depends on words, etc. Kerning is definitely what you want to pay attention to.
original tweaked Which is a bigger sin, odd alignment or bad kerning?
The first looks better. In the second one it looks like you were trying to align the letters above and below with each other, which is not what you should do at all. Not sure where you got the idea it was a sin from. The space to the left of the M in GAMES on the second one is too big.
Just finished coding and uploading my first site for web design course. The assignment was an unofficial re-branding of a restaurant: http://www.terrapinvirginiabeach.com/rodney.html but I'm pretty proud. Nice job on this
