That's the image size... the big version looks way better. :(
shouldn't make a difference, get into the habit of exporting your images properly, it'll do you plenty of favours!
I don't think it has anything to do with anti-aliasing.
Only to do with a way too thin stroke.
i doubt it has any stroke on it, since there's absolutely no need for it to be there
[editline]26th March 2013[/editline]
unless it is there... because if it isn't you should make it a solid shape instead of separate ones layered on top
I added a stroke to the engines, outlined it, and substracted it from the main rocket body.
i'd recommend thickening up the lines then, at the moment i found it difficult to tell whether it was a processing problem or an aspect of the design
as a general rule if you have a stroke make it quite noticeable or none at all
1pt strokes almost always look terrible

Sure looks better now, thanks guys. Any other improvements?

5pt stroke at your service. (It's 20pt now)
Accidentally worked on it for another half hour after downsizing it. Learned my lesson, never be too lazy to save for web. On the plus side, other than the terrible text, I think it's coming along nicely.
And I feel I should mention I don't have any choice with the color palette. Camo compliant is camo compliant.

Just as a general rule, don't stroke text.

I feel like it has a time and place. To be honest this is designed as an embroidered patch about 3-5 inches in diameter so realistically it'd probably just be black or tan stitching anyway.

If there is, it's so incredibly rare that you're better off just ignoring the option.
As far as stitched lettering, it doesn't look stitched. It looks like an ugly stroke.
I'd say lose it totally or find a way to incorporate that sort of "stitched" look.

Terrible design ethics, don't dismiss a technique just because people use it wrong.
There is no such thing as rules in art and design. There are only guidelines. If you dismiss something as being a valid option in any design at all times you're just limiting yourself and your creativity in a shitty way.
I don't disagree that stroke on the text doesn't work in this example, but stroke on text has plenty of uses, especially in more naive or childish design works.
First of all, which program did you use?
Now to my opinion: Really nice work on the colors, I like them. On the other hand, that "HP" font looks pretty ew, imo. I'd create my own ("H" and "P" are pretty easy letters to make) and make them the same color as the arrow/the skulls stroke.

Sorry, I wasn't clear enough about this I guess. It's not meant to represent a stitched look, as I'm creating a design to submit to an embroidering company, not make a mock-up of the finished product. I meant that it wouldn't be feasible to have such a fine stroke on a small patch, so it would realistically be consolidated to solid text without stroke, hence "just black or tan stitching anyway"
If anything I used stroke for the sake of legibility in a design that needs to be simultaneously bold and subdued, and to bulk up the text as it should take up as much unused space as possible without appearing to be 'spread too thin'.
And of course for consistencies sake, as the majority of shapes in the design are stroked, so it seemed natural to do the same for text.
I agree that it isn't the best look I've ever had, but I'm not exactly overrun with other options. Thankfully when a patch is submitted you can generally work with the company to revise the design and help make it more embroidery-friendly, as the look I'm trying to achieve with the text is quite standard.

Just photoshop, I'm making a mock up that will most likely be revised with a professional embroidery design company so I wasn't extremely concerned about future workability. While the skull was pen tooled, I'm much more familiar with photoshop as compared to illustrator and it allows me to express my ideas more quickly and fluently, even at a loss of quality (you can definitely tell there's 'shit-stroking' going on around the outer edges of the circle) and a bit of cobbling together techniques instead of doing them properly.
As for the HP font, I agree, but I'm not really sure what I want, even. I'd like to make them the same color as the rest of the patch but I need the HP to be more prominent than the design, but without scrapping the current design I'm limited by size and thus used black to bring them out. If possible the top and bottom lines would have been the same color as the rest but they overlap each other color used.

The general purposes that I've seen it used well for are always for pretty subtle effects.
The way he has it where it's a thick, dark outline will look bad 99% of the time, and that's why you only see it in novice design.
The only time I've ever seen obvious, outlined text work is when the lettering is hand-done (as well as the stroke)
Anyone here actually currently employed professionally? I've been looking for people to chit chat and/or collaborate with. I've been working at an agency for over a year now
I really want to try a hand at this, could someone please point me in the right direction?
Thank you!

What specifically? Think of something you want to design or just play around with shapes. Try downloading a demo of Adobe Illustrator and google "cool tutorials" to get you inspired and going somewhere. Then create something you think is good and bring it here to be devoured.
Is that what you mean, more or less?
I would like to design a logo, something like this:

Or perhaps a more simple version.

Well a good start is using Illustrator as mentioned. Basically look up tutorials on using the pen tool to design things like the fancy text, and similar techniques for the repeating patterns and symmetrical shapes, only I believe it uses a few different tools that help to automate the design and keep them symmetrical.
Unfortunately my experience with some of this is limited so I'll have to sit out the in-depth instructions and hope someone else can help you.
i'd like to help you, but i'm not sure if you realise just how vague you're being
what Biscuit-Boy said is fair advice though, have a play around in Illustrator and see what you can make with it

How would I make it less vague what I want to learn then?

I feel like maybe Autumn replied before you posted the second time, that you'd wanted to recreate something else specifically.
Hey guys, I just finished a logo for my new CSGO team.
I'm pretty happy with it, but let me know what you guys think.
I'll probably tweak it some more in the future but it's pretty tight so far, if I say so myself.

Here's some small progress shots too, for those who might find them interesting.
The sketch I did was reeeeallly shit though. I didn't have access to a scanner and my tablet is broken so it was done by mouse :suicide:
(being lazy was totally not a reason why, either)...

well if you want to recreate the Good Vibes logo then go for it. if you want to make another logo then go for it. are you interested in websites, packaging or just branding? do you have any interest in typography? do you have any interest in colour, composition? what about some editorial work, magazines etc. graphic design is such a broad subject you can't just say "so where do i start" because there is nowhere that you start. and not like you're sat down and read Graphic Design 101 and then you're ready to be a designer. do you have any artistic background? it's certainly not impossible to succeed in design without it but if you don't already have a basic understanding of colour, composition etc. you're likely to struggle in the start.
this is like going up to a bunch of musicians and saying "so guys... music huh - where do i start?" to which they'd probably reply telling you to a) pick up an instrument and have a go or b) study some of the theories behind it, and going through some Illustrator tutorials will cover both of those areas, albeit very basically.
one of the projects we're set in first year is to come up with a personal monogram, maybe that'd be a good place to start; quite simple, but allows you a lot of creative freedom

First of all, thank you for not becoming mad at me for having such a weid intro.
I have an interest in both websites and branding, I also have an interest in typgrahpy, I have no interest in colours or composition, but I feel like I should know this anyway. Could you (or someone else) reccomand me some webistes that cover these subjects?
I made this wallpaper of Commander Video from the BIT.TRIP series:

Do you guys work on PS with additional plugins or addons? i've been working with PS but i haven't downloaded or added any single thing to it. I'll like to know if there's some for digital painting. Thanks.

Btw, really nice logo there @KaLam1ty
