it feels like it uses too many cliches. the bg sucks, the wings shouldn't be so much a decorative part of the sheild, but rather part of the dragon itself somehow like before, except a little more obvious that it is a wing, b/c it looked kind of sloppy in the original one.
i agree with dgg, i liked the sword, maybe bring that back? and the drop shadow really sucks. also i think the whole sheild motif should be just dropped alltogether.
Cool, thanks for the cnc guys. The main issue I had with the other design was due to resizing.
While it looked great any size 400x400 and up, it just seem very awkward looking when it got downsized
to lower res in games or as avatar icons.
(i.e. the teeth made the dragon look horse like, the pose seemed very out of perspective, and the colors made the logo very hard to tell what was going in the over all picture).
I'll keep messing with it this weekend, though. Thanks again guys!

It's fully possible to design a logo that has variations when downscaled.
You could set a rule that at 400x400 and up that logo should be used, and then below 400x400 there is a different variation optimized for small scale that is more simplified.
the other dragon looked muscled and manly while this one looks a bit like a pansy
Haha, ok well I guess I'll just be sticking to the other one then.
However, I do still need something for icon sizes though --
one example being Dota 2 team flags:

How's something like this?

Also, yey/ney for the eye pupil? It seems too be clearer with it at <200px.
I'll probably leave it off for larger sizes. I might replace the shield again since you guys seem adverse to it.

nice work
I got to try Illustrator today, and holy crap it is amazing!
does anyone know any websites which follow a metro sorta tiles-esque design
Ive been asked to design a logo for a company called Little Kids Loft, does anyone know what I could do for it? I'm not getting paid for it but it would be cool if they used a logo I made, their current one is a rip off of toys r us lol, this is their website http://www.littlekidsbeds.co.uk/
(they are rebranding)
I was thinking of like just having text then a pile of teddy bears sort of thing but It's really hard coming up with ideas
well that'd be doing the hard work for you ;)
[editline]11th April 2013[/editline]
also why are they not paying you? how did they approach you?
Well I start working for them at the end of the month or at the start of May, and he just said to see if I could come up with anything and not to spend to much time on it, I had something like this in mind

How it looks on their website, their current one is a rip off of Toys R Us

Problem for me is that it doesn't represent a kids store eh.. lol
I'm 16 years old and I'm interested in learning about graphic design. I really have no idea where to start. I'm curious about what programs you guys use, also what sort of websites do you guys think would be good to use to learn about graphic design?
see if your school has any classes on multimedia/design/digital art, 95% of the time the classes suck but they teach you all the basics of how to use the programs like illustrator and photoshop, and from there you can just think for yourself for ideas and stuff. I'm 16 too and I go to a fancy school with different "majors," so I'm in a graphic design class 3 hours a day.
Also, for different things to read up on, you might want to try 4chan's new /gd/ board, once you get past all the shit there's actually some helpful people there who give decent advice, and there's usually a thread or two on little contests/ideas to do.
Just try shit out. I started when I was like 12 or 13 on GIMP, and I just started by following tutorials on making signatures (barf), but it taught me all the foundational knowledge, so moving on to photoshop and illustrator was simply like putting on a new pair of shoes. I'm not advocating for GIMP, but really I'm just saying, wherever you start, you'll get somewhere as long as you try to approach it personally instead of simply copying step for step.
Yeah teaching yourself is good at that age, have fun experimenting and start simple . But a good place to begin is to read up on things like:
- Design elements and principles
- Colour theory
- Typography
These are pretty much the bread and butter of design which pretty much every designer learns first up.
Eventually when you start getting somewhere begin making yourself a folio. So when you finish high school you can try and apply for courses if it's something you're really interested in. When I finished high school I had hardly any design work to help me get into Universities and I regretted it. (Even though it worked out in the end.)
Another big thing is just surround yourself with great design and art, look for design blogs, designers websites, etc. It really helps inspire you and gives you a feel of what the industry is up to. Just be careful not to flat out copy other peoples work.
One of my favourite image blogs for design and art, and generally cool visual stuff is ffffound.

they're just very visual blogs, but i love them, great for inspiration

and this is a great portfolio site!
Guys, I've been asked to design the front cover of my school yearbook but I have no idea what to do :( I want it to look elegant and classy and I think I've chosen the fonts for the job, but I need something for the background and I have no idea what to have...
It's going to be printed on glossy photo paper-y paper
any ideas?
personally i think it can be a little challenging to match elegant and classy with glossy photo paper, but i realise that's likely way out of your control.
simplicity will be the key i think. deep/rich colours, nothing too distracting.
what fonts are you thinking of using out of interest?

I agree :( some nice thick card stock would have been better
this is what I currently have:

but I'm not really happy with it at all
i think that's definitely a good start! other than that i don't have much to say (sorry) other than i would take the Class into Ai and join up the letters so it's actually a script word instead of unjoined letters. the kerning could do with a little work too, and also the kerning on WH and SB should be a bit more consistent
what's the font called? the f is lovely
[editline]12th April 2013[/editline]
also what was the background image before blur? it's not important i'm just curious!

Ah yeah I see what you mean about the WH and SB, I'll sort that and the Cl join out
The font is called Carrington: http://www.fontsquirrel.com/fonts/Carrington
and the background was just some autumn leaves from www.sxc.hu
it's not just the Cl, it should all be joined up. the C and L don't have to be, but try it and see how it looks. but lass should certainly be joined. and the a needs to move a bit to the left, at the moment it's shying away from the l and snuggling to close to the s
[editline]12th April 2013[/editline]
interesting font. on the page it doesn't look that good but it works how you have it
i'm not overly keen on the a but the rest makes up for it
I think the background would look a bit better if you added a teeny bit of noise making it seem a bit frosted/glassy instead of magic (or find a picture with some bokeh). I dunno what to think of that red spine, i think a brighter and less pure red would look nicer
it's a really good start though!
Personally I don't like the combo of the background and the red strip (color wise)
Personally I don't like the combo of the background and the red strip (color wise)
Ah the red strip is the spine of the book which apparently the printing people are going to sort out themselves, so basically its nothing
I think the colours of the blurred background look really bad, and I can't help but feel that a solid colour or more controlled texture would be much nicer. (Personal opinion obviously)
i agree. blurred backgrounds have their place in design, but here i don't think they're very appropriate for something like what you're designing. a red pattern might do a lot better
[editline]13th April 2013[/editline]
anyway, some daft punk thing i'm doing for a poster contest. it's 99designs, but it's a community poster i decided to do for a fun, judges are actual designers anyway

i kind of miscalculated on how to do any composition for it so i'll probably go back to the drawing board for this. it looks kinda cool though
Great idea but it doesn't translate that well on the right side.
yeah, i realized that. i might add more tris to show off the contours of guy-man's helmet more
Did you add those lines manually or use some kind of script/filter/whatever?
Not to judge or anything, just curious
