Wow. That is unreal.
How come Russia was so awesome back then?
Because at the time the gap between their society and ours was a lot smaller, and nowadays all we can really see is a wounded, thrashing animal which we know as the federation of russia. [editline]2nd December 2010[/editline]
Uh, honestly some of the best work I've seen has been with film photography. I'm a fan of film myself, I did it for a year and a half - Used a film SLR, developed my own film, developed my own pictures, use enlargers, learned different developing techniques, rolled my own film, etc. I was a part of every process involving film and developing my own film. Loved it. I think every photographer or every person that has some sort of interest in photography - professional or hobbyist, should do film at some point in their life. You learn to appreciate your work more along with others. You actually have to do some labor in order to make a final product. Not saying digital is bad, i use digital now. But the process of film photography is so much more satisfying and rewarding. From some film photography it is hard to even imagine that it was taken a 100 years ago.
I can't wait when the day comes where we upload our pictures to some data pad and we can physically manipulate our photos rather than using a keyboard and mouse. That'd be fucking badass.
Because at the time the gap between their society and ours was a lot smaller
uuhhh 95% of tsarist russia lived in extreme poverty russia has always been a shitty place to live
That's actually very true. Czar's were fucking awful, but so were the soviets, and so it is now as well.. But back then their piss ridden houses couldn't be compared to luxuries granite floors and abundant electronics in the civilized world so the gap was still smaller back than-- compared to now, if you understand.
How come Russia was so awesome back then?
It's still like that you know. There's plenty of small towns and villages besides modern moscow or whatever big modern city. The further you go east the further you go back in time. Also, is it just me or do you guys also notice how focused most fotos are. Must've been one hell of a camera for it's time.
:monocle: [editline]2nd December 2010[/editline] It was awful back then.
Depends on what you define as awful. I can see how people could enjoy living in rural parts of russia, away from modern bullshit. My russian classmate tells me that his grandma liked to live in Russia (now lives in here) and speaks fondly about it. Although she also believes Communism is the best.

I do love how clear those pics are, considering they were taken 100 years ago
I love this kinda stuff. There was a WW2 series on Channel 4 in the UK recently which was all black and white footage shown in colour.
Was it World War II in Color?
Was it World War II in Color?
IIRC, only Germans had true color film at the time of WW2. The reason everyone else had it since then, is because they pillages it from the Germans, after the war.
Why does this picture creep the shit out of me.
probably because abe's face is doing the same thing as the photos from the ring
My grandad always told me about when everything was black and white.
[img_thumb]http://photos.windsorpalmsusa.com/squidoo/Magic_Kingdom_castle.jpg[/img_thumb] Looks like Disney copied the Russian castle and inverted colors
So Mickey Mouse was a communist all along?
Holy shit. It all looks so... familiar in color. The port, for instance. The buildings look like something I could easily see if I just took a stroll round a older-but-not-run-down section of town in a well-to-do neighborhood.
That would never have happened because the royal family were a bunch of stuck-up assholes.
It could have happened. Nicholas II was trying to continue with the social-political reforms Alexander II started. He even went so far as to begin the transition from an absolute to a constitutional monarchy, which was going along rather well. He was a fine Tsar in peace time, so if that whole World War I thing hadn't happened, The Russian Empire might still be around as a (comparatively) new constitutional monarchy. [editline]4th December 2010[/editline]
Russia was beautyful before the revolution.
It still is. There are still tons of places where you can see stuff like this. Remember, modernization comes slows to 30,000,000+km of land.
As far as modernization, Russia seems to be doing well, but not well enough - Moscow seems to be doing well, but there's still a lot of rural areas that need help. Also, there's the nasty matter of the RBN. Also, those photos are fucking spectacular - why didn't the method catch on like it should have?
Why do most of those pictures look better than a cheap camera sold to this date? That must have been one big-ass expensive camera.
There's a modern photographer who juxtaposed modern photos with ones taken during WW2. [img_thumb]http://pics.livejournal.com/sergey_larenkov/pic/0006ak1z[/img_thumb] Cool shit. I can't find his blog though.
badass
Why do most of those pictures look better than a cheap camera sold to this date? That must have been one big-ass expensive camera.
The photographer got support from the Tsar. I don't know what that means, but i imagine he got money out of it.
The quality is good because it was a good quality camera, not some cheap shit. Just because it's old doesn't mean it can't compete with modern days. Look at vinyl.
the color makes it feel so alive i love it !

Had Alexander II not died, Russia might have survived the first world war and the world would be drastically different
This is pretty damn cool.

Which is exactly what you're seeing i believe. although i expected the photos blurry, so it suggests an expensive as shit lense for the time too. It's fun to mount old lenses on new systems.
