Call it nitpicking, but he forgot to mention the way movies in general, especially action movies, look these days
Like shit
Take this comparison of Se7en Blu-rays for instance

Every movie now has to look like the Warner Blu-ray even though the Italian looks ten times better for most situations
Oh neat. I watched Taken with my family some time ago and thought the camera-work fucking sucked with it's constant shaking and switching that happened every 2 seconds. They loved it so I just thought it's some hip, new cool thing in action movies I haven't gotten used to. Glad people think it's actually terrible, it's the main reason I don't watch action-movies anymore.
I thought that Shaky-cam was used purposefully in certain situations. The clip he showed to annotate the startup point from the Hunger Games was, I felt, a good use of Shakycam, the protagonist is frightened, uncertain and disoriented and the Camerawork reflected it.
It made sense functionally, but it still sucked. Who is being killed? Is it anyone important?
I understand using shaky cam in something like car chase sequence but for anything else it's just rubbish and it's lazy.
I wonder what movie started the trend :v:
I don't know but AvPR is an abomination because of that. I hated that movie, you can't see shit when there were battles. It was god awful to watch in theaters.

They used it throughout the whole movie though and to be honest it made me feel kinda nauseous.
It's really good.

It's really good.
Watched it with my roommate today
[sp]It's really good.[/sp]
Kingsman(The Secret Service) had awesome fight scenes. I'm not sure you can count it as an action movie, but the way they filmed and made fight scenes was awesome. I personally absolutely loved it.
Honestly thought it was on par with "need for speed", yet more boring.
if you're talking about the first few then i get it, but 5 and 6 are legitimately great action movies

No, the newish movie staring Aaron Paul
No, the newish movie staring Aaron Paul
im stupid, i keep getting fast and furious and need for speed mixed up
I wonder what movie started the trend :v:
The Bourne Supremacy did it
John Wick didn't have enough buildup IMHO. "shit my wife died oh hey a puppy ROBBERS TIME TO KICK ASS"

That and the fact that everyone is scared of him from the get-go. It's pretty much a sequel to a movie that never came out.
It's because its not an origin story. He was already a badass, who had retired, and then everything when to shit.
Shakycam = "time for the fight scene, chuck the camera down a flight of stairs and call it a day"
Lucy in the thumbnail oh my god that movie was abysmal
How the hell did people look at Scarlett Johansson and think, "Wow! She would look really really good in an action movie!"

She's not bad as Black Widow though.
God I fucking hate shakycam.
Shakycam is the worst. It's even starting to plague TV shows like Monday Night Raw. I legitimately get motion sickness from watching this shit.
She's not bad as Black Widow though.
She's terrible as Black Widow, which is incredible because Black Widow isn't a tough character to portray.
Hell, her work as Black Widow and in that disaster Lucy is much the reason why people are so butt-flustered that she got the role of Motoko Kusanagi in that GitS movie; she absolutely can not play a tough competent fighting woman.
This.
Because of the overuse of shakycam I find Man of Steel unwatchable because all I see is the fact that they hired a cameraman with Parkinson's. Even in the dialogue scenes the vibration the camera makes is ungodly distracting.
So often shaky cam seems like an excuse to be cheap asses on special effects. If you look at individual frames it's a total mess of garbage.
I just hate it anyways, but it's used far too often to cover up shitty effects.
I think the main issue with shaky cam is they use it to mask bad acting.
Shaky cam is very effective in conveying force if used right. Like defining a hit with a smoother movement, then shaking on impact.
So where do many Arnold Schwarzenegger movies fall? I know it took Predator as an example, but in another movie like Commando it goes with the kidnapped daughter shtick.
The most redeeming quality of centering a movie around a nigh-invincible main character is that the logic works differently: you CAN actually break a heavy lock on a gate with your bare hands and you can do inventive stunt stuff like lifting a telephone booth upside down to get the antagonist out.
In general, it's fun seeing this strong dude gun down lots of people shirtless, get into fistfights with an easy win or other stuff able to be portrayed by a super muscular dude because not a lot of other people can do those stunts or pull off that character. It's a little weak though because you turn a likable and relatable character into a demigod and then you're just watching it happen, not being able to associate with the character.

i don't think that it's because she can't play the imposing part, she's just a bad actress in general. like, she plays the "tough" aspect well enough considering her skills, she's just lacking in everything else
Man I didn't know Cruise did his stunts on Edge of Tomorrow. No wonder it was so good.
So on the discussion of action movies, what are some really good ones that I should see? Already saw Raid 1 & 2
Dredd, definitely

Certified stunt man he is.
I really enjoyed the stunts/fighting in the last two hobbit movies, Winter Soldier and GoT

There are always the classics like Terminator 1 and 2, Robocop, and Aliens.
Dredd was already mentioned, which is really good.
Though I didn't think it was fully action, I thought District 9 was pretty good.
If you want to watch so bad it's good, there's Samurai Cop and Hard Ticket to Hawaii.
Kung Fu Hustle is a personal favorite of mine.
Lastly, Bruce Lee and Jackie Chan movies are usually always fun to watch.
I thought this fight scene was pretty dope.
