I just realized that rhythm the OP's video talks about is present in a lot of old Chinese Kung Fu movies. Interestingly enough, One Finger Death Punch is just a 2 button game and it actually manages to capture that same rhythm you see in those Kung Fu movies.
John Wick got a perfect score according to this video.
Relatable character, good villains, outstanding score, a breaking point, good cinematography, etc. Best action film of the year imo
Just saw it. Totally overrrated from what the buzz was on the internet. The story was just as generic as any other modern action movie except done in a minimalist fashion where the "plot" serves as a uninteresting utility for the 2 out of 5 action scenarios that made the movie seem cool.
The cinematography DID stand out in some places, but overall the pacing of the movie completely ruins whatever nice cinematography was in it.
Not to mention half-way through the movie the flow of the scenes completely starts to fall apart, and it doesn't really end in a satisfying way. You also see a character die that wasn't really THAT important at all in the first place, which came off as a pointless excuse to FINALLY kill the "last boss" of the movie rather than just his son.

Not a kung-fu movie, but it's Hong Kong. Hardboiled comes off as the "perfect" action movie for me. It has everything. Great story, some of the greatest shooting action scenes of all time, tons of awesome practical effects with shit loads of bullet squibs and debris, and really really good pacing in-between the action.
There's also just a sense of self-awareness. It's not cold, quick, realistic, murderous action. It knows it's a movie and there is just a lot of over the top bombast and drama in the action, because it knows that's what action movie audiences want.
If anyone hasn't seen Hardboiled in this thread, and you want to know what a lot of people consider the pinnacle of the genre, go see it.
Man I didn't know Cruise did his stunts on Edge of Tomorrow. No wonder it was so good.
Tom Cruise has done his own stunts since fucking forever and so has Keanu Reeves, hence the amazing pieces of art that are Edge of Tomorrow and John Wick and Speed and Point Break and Mission Impossible, and you get the idea
So on the discussion of action movies, what are some really good ones that I should see? Already saw Raid 1 & 2
Terminator 2
Aliens
Who Am I?
Big Trouble in Little China
Rumble in the Bronx
You know what's worse than shakeycam? DIGITAL shakeycam. It means they had perfectly usable, steady footage and they went out of their way to add a shakeycam effect in post to make it look shittier.
Hit the fuckin nail on the head. Shakycam needs to die a horrible, bloody death.
I'm glad The Raid and its sequel got mentioned in there, they're two of my favourite recent action movies.
The fight scenes are just crazy, and half the time it feels like there's no way the hero can possibly keep standing but he fights on anyway out of sheer bloody determination.

The car chase? The car chase.

I truly resent the horror genre tbh
its a complete joke. it's especially turned to shit with video games.
I really, REALLY love good horror, but there is so much fucking garbage out there it's insane.
Like there are tons of amazing stuff even today but most of it is a joke.
Action seems mostly like senseless explosions. This is why I loved Arnolds stuff, where it's mostly just senseless death everywhere. It's amazing.

the Expendables is the epitome of a bad action movie.
I'm surprised he never mentioned shit like Transformers. Easily one of the worst offenders. Low FOV shots with shakycam of gigantic robots fighting eachother doesn't make for a very pleasing movie. Most of the action shots in those movies actually gave me headaches from trying to piece together what the fuck was actually happening.
I'm also surprised he never mentioned Death Sentence. That movie had mild use of shakycam but it worked. That movie is definitely in at least my top 10 favorite action movies. Relatable regular joe father of two has his whole family murdered by a gang and he goes off the wall and starts a personal vendetta against all of them. It's fucking awesome.

I am not saying this is you, but I feel like every stranger I talk to in public about movies always just talks shit on whatever horror movie they watched recently to feel smart and cool about themselves because they know SO MUCH about MOVIES. And they are always like "Horror movies are so stupid".
I feel like people should start giving horror movies a chance again, there have been some legit good ones in recent years. It also just depends what you are looking for in horror movies.
Personally, I feel a horror movie can be atrocious but I will love it for it's charm and cheese sometimes. It's just about not going in with expectations, but looking at the positives a movie has as it goes along even if it's unintended positives.

Funny enough, the guy who made this video also made one about horror movies.

So i found out how shakycam works.
I wonder what movie started the trend :v:
I think it was The fellowship of the ring back in 2001. Peter Jackson was a fan of the handheld cam and used it in his fight scenes and set the standard for action scenes from then on.
Just using the troll fight scene as an example, this scene was well done, and it just so happens that it was shot with a handheld camera, because that is Peters style. Directors these days overanalysed it and concluded that it was handheld cam / shaky cam that MADE the scene great so every fight scene has to include it.

I don't know notice it as much in LOTR though for some reason.
All I know is the first movie to utilize "shaky cam" footage in a very negative light that I saw was Batman Begins. It fucking completely ruined the whole movie. I remember a lot of people saying "it wasn't that bad." Well it seems I was in the right, now that everyone hates the technique so much.
Shakycam = "time for the fight scene, chuck the camera down a flight of stairs and call it a day"
I don't know if you've ever seen behind the scene footage of those scenes getting shot but the camera man is fucking hilarious, it's like a parody of an asian tourist with parkinson's disease.
Not to mention some camera operators who outright strap a drill to the side of it and start the drill when filming which causes the whole fucking thing to constantly shake.
No mention of Crank anywhere in here?
I'm sure that it's guilty of a lot of the stuff, but Crank 2 is an incredibly stupid fun over-the-top movie. It's glorious.
