This may sound like a stupid question, but can anyone help me find a beat that is at least similar to the one in NBA Ballers Phenom Trailer?
i can lay down good drum patterns and find nice samples for melody and chop things up and all that but one thing that's been killing me lately is a. finding good drum samples and b. making basslines. i downloaded a massive amount of drum machine samples and i've been using those for a while, using EQ and other little effects to make them sound different each time (and more organic) but i feel like my little drum machine samples still sound too robotic compared to other people's tracks. basslines i've been doing via the Analog instrument in ableton lmao, but after a while a simple sine wave bubbling around in the background of the track just sounds cheap. does anyone have any tips for good hip hop drums/basslines? would be insanely appreciated. [editline]10th November 2012[/editline] i have a usb turntable so i can sample vinyl and i have some old disco so i've been trying to grab samples from breaks, which has worked "alright" but idk, something seems off. is this how most people do it? sampling and chopping breaks from old shit? [editline]10th November 2012[/editline]
Damn, I forgot I posted that earlier. Well the MPC1000 was $500 but I got a SP404sx now too, and I haven't touched the MPC since. Thinking of selling it, but I know I will regret that because I might resample the SP output into the MPC for sequencing, especially when I start making more beats for remixes. I don't make beats for people to rap over, just pocket beats, experimental. The MPC would probably mesh better if you have a setup that's mostly on the computer. However, if you want something integrated for the computer then the maschines and midi controllers like that would be better. But if you want a standalone piece of hardware that has a REALLY good workflow, where everything is quick and easy to do, the sp-404's are perfect. That's why I fell in love with this. It's cheaper then an MPC too, and if you get an sp-404sx not only can you store like 32gb of audio on it (with the right sd card) but you can get a card reader to drag and drop audio on and off your computer. Assuming you make beats using the resample method entire beats can be dragged off the sampler and onto your computer as well. they sell for around $300 depending on if you use ebay or amazon (I think retail is like 400) my MPC was 500 because I bought it used, new MPC1000's are still a hefty $1000 new. Another big plus for the 404 is the sp-forums.com which is very active with everything you could want to know about it. Some of the regular guys on the forums are really skilled too. Mr. Dibiase (brainfeeder) regularly posts, and is posting even more frequently especially in the beat battle part of the forums where you will get good praise and constructive criticism from the members.
thanks a ton for this post. i've been eyeing MPCs and i hadn't even really considered sp404s. but if i have a solid workflow with midi devices (currently using an mpd26 with ableton), what benefits are there to using a straight up controller? is it all just personal preference and analog feel or are there some little features or are there features and benefits to using analog over midi?
Cooked up this little beat tape, "Strictly Strings" Listen to Soundcloud recording http://soundcloud.com/faceclef/golden
does anyone have any tips for good hip hop drums/basslines? would be insanely appreciated. I don't have experience with mpc.
I really dig this, mind if I use it?
Thanks, as long as it stays free - no problemo. A new one, I usually dont sample this heavy but i really love this damn song, its basicly sample + drums + bass + rhodes.
sup gents
Your drums hit hard and your bassline is on point but you really ripped that sample off nujabes lol. I mean the way you flipped it I actually thought I was listening to Nujabes for a while. The part where you reverse it and shit is pretty dope tho. Yeah it's tight but the sampling is pretty boring.
and another
sounds like stuff you'd hear on one of those Adult Swim bumps, nice job i wish the bass hit a bit harder and the snare kinda "cut" more though, still a sweet track [editline]20th November 2012[/editline]
Oh lord my facebook is page is loaded with some ghetto shit. Fresh off the recording table tonight:
the beat is way too dramatic and just eh, not enjoying it at all. your weird stressed out voice is way too obnoxious and annoying, and the flow is just kinda.. off. like the combination of your over-exaggerated and accentuated voice and the weak flow makes it just awkward tbh. like i'm really not trying to be a cunt at all because rapping is hard for lots of people especially finding a decent voice to do it with, but you slur too much, the lyrics aren't very creative and the rhymes themselves are kinda stretched, like none of the lines end nice and clean, everything just kinda drags on and you fill space inbetween words by just making the word drag on (which is almost always a terrible idea). it sounds kinda like one of those raps people would put in a MadTV parody, it just sounds kinda cheap, the voice is a bit ridiculous and the lyrics don't really have much meaning or content
Fresh off the recording table tonight:
Is this for real?
Fresh off the recording table tonight:
How is your normal talking voice like? Yeah, use it and exaggerate it, it is what is going to sound the best.
Meader: The mix is cheap as hell, thats why it sounds so shitty. Im all for finding your own style and thats what you did. Needs more routine, some small parts are offbeat but theres definitely potential imo. ---------------------------------
the rhymes themselves are kinda stretched, like none of the lines end nice and clean
That's kind of the style I was going for in this song; a much more strung together, what I thought was more fluent transition between rhymes. I didn't really want to get stuck in a single rhyme scheme because I felt it made the rhymes sound much more forced.
it sounds kinda like one of those raps people would put in a MadTV parody, it just sounds kinda cheap, the voice is a bit ridiculous and the lyrics don't really have much meaning or content
I get that it sounds cheap for sure. There was zero mixing. The voice isn't what I want, so I agree there too, for sure. The lyrics not having meaning or content I disagree with though. We were screwing around at my friend's apartment where he built a small recording studio under his stairs, and that was just a one take after I kept screwing up like, 5 times. Everyone wanted a turn to record though so I couldn't mix anything or layer or whatever else. I'll have to re-record when we have some real time.

eyedea is someone who does the "strung together and fluent" thing a lot, especially in this song, the difference is that all of his rhymes still kinda lock to the beat and the syllables kinda play around and dodge the beats sometimes but always come back around and end a line very smooth and clean eventually. if you want to be fluent and string everything along you need to string it along with more syllables, not stretching out words. as far as lyrics and their meaning, yeah i get that there is a "meaning" to the lyrics, i read the lyrics on your tumblr, but the meaning is fairly shallow. it's basically 3 minutes (or whatever) of you talking about how you have morals and everyone else sucks, which is fairly shallow. this would be excusable but the rhymes pushing that message aren't really clever either. everything is pretty "plain text" and literal, there's a couple creative little lines like "every time I put my heart on the line / I get it sent back stuffed with flowers and a hollow goodbye" but overall the lyrics and overall message just feel a bit like filler. its something to listen to but theres no lines in there that made me go "wait whoa what'd he say", and the message wasn't anything that made me think. just work on your voice and your writing, you have a decent foundation

Thank you, kind sir.
Brand new shit.
Kick is waaay too soft imo, lacking the upper bass freqs. Lovin the sample though... "It's like all my life I've just been going, going, going. Wish I'd taken more time to stop and smell the roses so to speak..." Beautiful transitions and FX!
Howdy everyone! I am hearing some amazing producers posting in this conversation. It makes me discouraged when I look at my skill in that area but I am a lyricist that wanted to revive this badass thread. Although it isn't much Here is the only actual recorded song I have out that I recorded with a bud who has quite a bit of tunes out, I am on second verse. It was rushed in about an hour so excuse the mastering, the instrumental was created by another friend. http://soundcloud.com/phillasofic/permanent-disposition-feat

http://soundcloud.com/phillasofic/permanent-disposition-feat
you're really good at recording like your voice is v confident and clear and everything comes through really well. wasn't super impressed by the lyrics or flow but to be fair i have stupidly high standards especially when just criticizing soundcloud dudes so whatevs. i'm always really harsh on people who don't just shove syllables into every line which is stupid but idk that's my preference i guess maybe when i'm a bit more decent at producing we can collab? [editline]6th December 2012[/editline] you were the third guy right the one that came in at 2.15 right
Some nu G-Funk / Disco Funk
Yea, definitely an unfinished piece. Some may say bad to show off but I will post something better eventually. I was the guy that came in at 2.15 correctamundo, It was my friend who went first. I'm really just writing verses to instrumentals that I find, until Christmas rolls around and I feel comfortable financially to purchase a nice microphone. We used his Shure (not sure what model) right in the middle of a basement bedroom that had excellent sound dampening. I am just now starting to wade into the recording scene, I really have only been just a free-styling fool. Thank you for the responses.

Not really sure if this counts as hip hop or not, but it was heavily inspired by some hip hop I listened to in the past week or so
i dont know how hip-hop this is, its kinda trappy but also kinda not, i dont know maybe it doesnt belong here, but what do you guys think?
