I went to college for one day, learned nothing, and now I owe $2k. A few of my friends have much more debt from school than I do so I know it could be much worse. My advice to high school students getting ready for college? Lookup schools now, apply for scholarships and grants, and in general be more involved in getting ready for college. Damn, i'm so jealous of all this talk of free education.
Most people I know got into college having to use student loans. Shit's going to be bad for them. I'm going to work until I have some money and then go into a community college. But that's for when I move out of here into NYC, which is pretty much the start of living on my own working and whatnot.
Oh yeah, right, college is such a great idea.. I want to spend most of my life paying back loans with a restaurant job that has absolutely nothing to do with my college degree. College is such a sham it's not even fucking funny.. Yeah if you want to piss your life away working for someone else and sucking dick, go to college. If you have dreams of one day having a family and kids and a prison on the hill, go to college. . though it's not likely that any will happen since college degrees don't mean shit anymore. Be a specialist and provide something that nobody can provide. Be an entrepreneur. . Do you realize how many other people graduated from college with law degrees, English degrees and the like?? Thousands. But it's beat into our heads that college is the only answer . . The only reason for this is because in America, colleges are fucking businesses. They only want your money and that's it. I mean, what the fuck are you if you don't bring anything to the table? You're just another scrub that spent money to get fucked up and get a degree. [editline]10th September 2011[/editline]
Didn't get accepted to any of the schools I applied to. I seriously have nothing to do right now, been looking for a job but nothing so far.. :/
Work in a restaurant. Food and beverage is a consistent business. This is about time to apply since everyone is going back to school .. You can serve, bus, run food, wash dishes or serve drinks at the bar if you're of age. I suggest you get on that now. You'll make bank if you hustle.
That happened to me last year Becuase I have a switch to not give a fuck about schools, lol

They can't get hired anywhere because most employers are only hiring people who are experienced now.
Know how many people went off to be entrepeneurs and had so little idea of what was going on they pissed away money and assets to try and make it right? College/Uni isn't a ticket to a job, but it's an opportunity (albeit an expensive one) to broaden your knowledge, abilities and way of thinking to make the most of the career path you choose. You coast your way through and you're wasting the cash, you try and make the most of it and you can succeed.
In two years I'm applying to DigiPenn and from what I've read I will most likely be rejected. :eng101:

I'm going to trade school. There's one really close to me, even though they're stuck in the dark ages (mandatory evening church services as well as Sunday services, hair has to be short, 8pm curfew on week days and weekends) I'll probably go there and just become a plumber or whatever. It's affordable with what little money I have for college. I was in the process of choosing what colleges to apply to in my senior year when I realized that I could never afford to go to the ones I wanted to without taking out loans, so I gave up, saves me the trouble of ever leaving my hometown I guess. To clarify I will be going to a trade school, I worded it a bit more like I was already attending one.
Convert to LDS, do a mission and get in Brigham Young University in Hawaii. Bam.
Thinking about applying to some grad schools on the west coast of the US. I don't feel so confident with my current research experience and craptastic barely above 3 GPA.
I got into the college I wanted, but the classes are kicking my ass.
It's not that I got denied, it's more that I can't return until I can get enough money. Nobody in my family has very good credit and it's very difficult for me to get a loan, so I wasn't able to go my sophomore year due to this. I got mostly A's and B's in Freshman year. I only applied to one school and I got in. I also had the option of going to RIT with a scholarship they were offering, but I decided not to even try because even with the scholarship I wouldn't have been able to afford it.
There's much misinformation in this thread, so allow me to clear up a few facts for you: *Foreign countries (particularly in Europe) do offer free (or even paid) college tuition but those nations pay for it with much higher tax rates. Don't feel too jealous. *Many college degrees are useless and graduates can end up working at Starbucks. America has plenty of doctors, lawyers, IT specialists, and English majors. Choose an industry that's in-demand. *Best way to avoid paying for a useless education? Major in a science or engineering field. Many scholarships are available for engineering/science degrees too. *Don't take a year off school. Don't lie to yourself; you don't need time to "find yourself". It's best to stay in school whilst you're in the appropriate mindset. Schools will want to know what you spent a year doing. Some may choose not to accept your high school GPA and/or SAT/ACT scores if you wait too long. *College isn't "bullshit" and it isn't a scam. I challenge you to present a better way to educate people.
I've been going to my college of choice for most of this year now, In my country we are lucky because the goverment will give us an interest free student loan, so its not that hard to pay back.

Guaranteed 80% or more of colleges will put the accumulation of wealth before their students education. They perpetuate the myth that going to college guarantees you a high paying job at its conclusion. I didnt get accepted anywhere, and I know why. I failed my maths examination. Now I'm going to resit my maths next year to hopefully bring that grade up, I'm not going to go back to school though seeing as I only will be learning the one subject. This is because I got a decent enough points rating (305). I'll apply again next year, and this year I'll work on what I'll actually be doing in college so I can be a level ahead of my peers. As-well as work on a portfolio of some kind to make me more attractive to any future company I apply to work for.
I was accepted into one college, a great one too, but I had no money. I couldn't even get help from FAFSA, so I'm going to end up working through the fall and winter so I can start school in the Spring.

Im looking more into the design part with 3d models and concept art rather than programming .
I got into Lamar University and this is my second year here, pretty satisfied here and getting a decent amount of financial aid

You used to be able to afford a good US college just from the wages of working at a job the summer before. That was before the government decided to give out student loans to anyone that asked and inflated the tuition just like with what happened with the housing market. Some things like Healthcare should be provided by the government but college loans should be privatized like they used to be. Luckily though, my parents have good jobs and saved up a fund so I'll be alright without loans. You can't just "be an entrepreneur" because that's a high financial risk and some people will make it and most won't. College degrees can get you in a stable job with good income as long as you don't drown in debt. Especially in the medical field where even just a nursing degree can guarantee a good job and stable future.

They offer borrowers' protections that private lenders would not offer if it weren't regulated by the government. You can still get education loans without going through FSA but I think you'll find the repayment terms far less forgiving. They don't "give out student loans to anyone that asks"; the aid they offer depends heavily upon the individuals financial situation and ability to pay. As for rising tuition costs, well that's a more difficult subject to tackle. It's possible that the wider availability of student aid prompted colleges to raise rates but I think there are other (perhaps far greater) factors to consider. For one, expectations for campus facilities and student services has risen; that means far greater spending on improving infrastructure and hiring staff to cover student needs. Then there is the pressure on institutions to offer scholarships and other financial incentives to attract top-notch students (essentially competing for them with other institutions). On top of all that you have general inflation. You can afford a college education "from the wages of working at a job the summer before" by attending a community college. Sure it won't be the grand institution that Hollywood likes embelish, but you stand to learn a valuable trade all the same (if you choose your major wisely). A little side-note: the government wasn't responsible for the housing market crisis; irresponsible private lending & banking practices was the cause.

On the other hand, I can learn whatever the fuck I want. This is 2011, resources are everywhere. I don't need some douchebag that's collecting a paycheck to teach me anything. That's my proposal! If you want to learn something, go see it for yourself and talk to people. Don't have some person (who is just another person like you!) tell you what it is behind four white walls. Always go to the source and learn for yourself.. However, I do understand there are some people that aspire to be scientists and shit that requires an education, I'm a bit biased because what I'm doing doesn't require any type of education besides real life experience and people skills. From what I've seen, kids from my town (an extremely wealthy suburb in Massachusetts) that graduate from our high school and go on to college are people who are not intelligent at all, they're just trained to be selfless by their families so schoolwork is easy for them. They're ready to be a father or mother once they've pissed their life away establishing a career, starting the entire process over as they enter parenthood. I don't care what kind of education people get, most grads I meet are still fucking idiots. Our parents generation was different, if you went to MIT or whatever, it actually meant something then.. It's a high financial risk to put all of the money your parents put away for you or take out loans to go to a four year college and spend the rest of your life paying it back. And you're NEVER guaranteed a job and a stable future, that's a fucking pitch.
Where I live if I fuck up and dont get into a good college I can just do two years out of university then apply for senior student status, redo the equivelent of the SAT's and assuming I pass that I have guarenteed admissions. Oh the joys of provincial laws.
From a business standpoint it's good to start a business young in life if you ever plan to, later on you will be stranded with more assets to lose and more responsibilities. If that's what people are considering, you'd mainly need a business plan with an executive summary and a ventura capital/anglel investor who will invest in your company (never try to gamble your own money). The hardest part is coming up with a good idea though. If you can't do that, then college is the path with less risk AND less reward than the enterpreneur path.

Just found out that I'm a national merit scholar and I got a 1390/1600 on the SAT. Since my family can't pay for higher tier engineering colleges, I think I'm going to apply for ROTC...does anyone have experience with this? What are my chances in being accepted if I'm applying so late?
You pay to go to college and get rejected? WTF?
College is like any other system, you get out what you put into it. Don't give a shit about your class? Then you don't care about learning, obviously. I'm no fan of my Macroeconomics class but I can recognize that it's a good class to take and I'm learning a lot.
