how retarded would it be to put a red dot sight on a bolt action rifle?

in a kind of patrol rifle setup (short heavy barrel, bipod, suppressor, and a cheek riser with spare mag+ammo in)

cool idea
why not
I always wanted one of those ruger scout rifles in .308 to have a quality dot site on it, I'd imagine it'd make one heck of a hog gun
I can purchase an M1 Garand for $32.95. [sp]It's just the receiver, but legally it's still an M1 Garand.[/sp]
Well, I went to a place and did a thing today.

Also, found this in the brass:

Where can I get the best deal on an Ar15 upper without a barrel? Doesn't matter if it's complete or stripped.
Palmetto State Armory (when they actually have them).

Checkout Aero Precision or Delton. They sell their parts on their own websites at a reasonable price
Got an AMT Automag III for $800 at a gun show today.

Also got an Uzi parts kit with semi-auto bolt for $300, so with a receiver and barrel (already ordered from McKay Enterprises) I should be good to go on a semi-auto Uzi build for only about $650.

Pretty exciting haul, I think.

is the grip of the AMT as long as it looks?
and will you ""pistol"" or sbr the oosy?
"arm brace"
:v:
is the grip of the AMT as long as it looks?
Yes, it's by far the longest grip of any handgun I've ever held. It fits perfectly in my hands, but my hands are too big to comfortably fit on a Glock 19.
and will you ""pistol"" or sbr the oosy?
SBR. I was toying with buying one of those fake suppressors and just leaving it as a carbine but $100+ for a piece of useless metal seems dumb, so might as well SBR. Also planning to get a wood stock because I'm not a fan of the lawnmower blade and if I SBR it I can use the QD feature of the wood stock as designed.

yes it is. the round it shoots has over twice the overall length of 9mm, and the grip iirc is just a hair over 2 inches long

I just realized it's chambered in .30 Carbine.

That's his man stopper pistol. His problem solver right there.
I'm arguing with someone on reddit about why the SVT was the best semi-auto rifle of WWII and why the Garand is actually kinda a bad gun.
Fite me.
The SVT was kinda shit with it's crap reliability and complex manufacturing for Russia. Granted the Garand has it's share of issues, but nothing I have seen of the gun locking up completely from regular use.
SVT had fine reliability when maintained properly, which was the issue for the Russians since they don't maintain their guns. The Germans and Finnish loved them because they knew how to maintain them.
That was more an issue the Germans had with the stupid design on the G41 than the Russians. Hell the K43 borrowed heavily from the SVT because the Germans found it so much more reliable.
I finally heard back from the guy selling the M16A1-style rifle. I said I was interested, and asked where he wanted to meet for the transfer. I gave him my location (south side of the metro area) and he said he'd ship it to my FFL. WTF? So I repeated my question asking where he was located. No response. Pretty sure it's a scam, so I'll just build out a more practical midlength rifle.
AG42 is still the sadly most shit semi auto of ww2, since they would literally rust into pieces
sucks since they're the best looking design and they use the best cartridge ever
I have a Hakim, it's pretty much just an Egyptian made AG-m42 in 8mm Mauser with an adjustable gas system. I haven't noticed any problems with it at all, it seems to me to be an incredibly reliable and accurate firearm that's great to shoot, and despite its bizarre mechanism, it's extremely easy to disassemble and maintain.
The problems you mention are pretty much entirely due to the original AG-42's direct impingement gas system and the fact that the gas tube was made of steel, which caused it to rust easily because it was impossible to clean. The gun was quickly modified to have an aluminum gas tube and had a number of improvements to make it easier to clean when firing corrosive ammunition.
The Hakim is pretty much just the Swedish AG-m42 at it's most modernized form around the 1960's with a few simplifications made to the design (mostly cosmetic, though they did also add an adjustable gas system and rechamber it to 8mm Mauser). It's probably one of my favorite battle rifles not only because of how fun it is to work the action (feels like operating a pistol more than a rifle at times), but because it's an absolute joy to shoot in every way. Accurate, low recoil, points well, and did I mention it's fucking accurate? The thing is begging for a scope mount but I would never do that to such a beautiful rifle.

He clearly doesn't feel comfortable meeting you person to person. That doesn't mean it's a scam, that's just how a lot of people do business.

I'm actually looking at doing the same thing, because while I like my M4gery, it's heavy, and I'd prefer something lighter and more up-to-date.
This is pretty sexy:

Interesting that it's an IAI instead of an AMT. I don't recall all the history there but my impression is that's a pretty rare stamp. You practically stole that thing my dude.
I want a Hardballer some day. Problematic guns but damn they're sexy, the Longslides are especially stupid. But sexy.

State law requires private sales go through an FFL, so there's no way around that. I'm not going to send the guy a check for $800 because he doesn't feel like driving 20 minutes and burning 15 minutes at a gun shop waiting for the bgc to come back.

Oh, well I don't know what to tell you then. Maybe he's just a lazy fuck lol. I'm used to private sales not having to go through background checks, as it is in my state.
Ever give any thought to building one? I built my Colt 604 replica for about $700 with an original upper, barrel, stock, triangular heat guards and the early model pistol grip. Everything else was just run of the mill AR-15 parts and a Nodak Spud retro AR receiver.
I can't really find the good deals of yore on retro AR parts kits. I'd end up spending a buttload on mine. I've got an MP-15 I'd rather just trade straight up for a finished one.

I didn't bother with parts kits. I just slowly accumulated all the parts I needed over the course of a few months. Even when the parts kits came out I doubt I could've built it cheaper.
I have had that rifle for a couple years now though so things might've changed, but I still see a lot of retro AR stuff around gunbroker and whatnot.

Part of that is my lack of patience. When I start a project I usually try to get it done quick before I lose interest in it. I have a SAA sitting unfinished right now that I meant to have done like a year ago. :v:

Good luck finding M16A1 uppers right now. I spent a good while hunting around for one in stock.

I guess I was lucky to find an original Colt 604 upper on Gunbroker. The guy was selling them for quite a while it seemed. It sucks that most milsurp US parts/firearms are ridiculously expensive and/or hard as hell to find.

Yeah I hear you, but man does it pay off in the end after you've been sitting on a project for a few months and you finally get to see it in all its glory.

I've found one place still selling them, and it's $700 minus a barrel and lower. Seems like just a couple years ago they were easily found for $350 in that condition.
