Swiss rifle catalogue...actually crying right now...
So I'm planning on buying a rifle some time after I get to my unit in Ft. Riley, Kansas. Registering a weapon with the MPs on post shouldn't be much of a hassle from what other gunowners here told me. However, I'm conflicted between getting an AR or an AK. With the AR, I'm somewhat familiar with given I learned to shoot one back in basic training. The AK, it's something I want to have and familiarize myself with. Does anyone here know the pros and cons of having either rifles?
Get an AR to re-enforce what you've already learned, you won't shoot much on Uncle Sugar's dime unless you're Infantry or MP, etc. AKs are fun, and it helps to know the "enemy's" weapon; you can hunt with 7.62x39 with the right ammo, has ballistics like 30-30. If you're buying Wolf steel case ammo, 5.56, 5.45 and 7.62x39 all come out to 24 cents per round now. 7.62x39 AK mags are cheap and plentiful (around $8 well worn, $13 in decent condition), 5.45x39 mags are $30-40 per mag and get vacuumed up when they're around. Don't even bother with a 5.56 AK unless it takes AR mags, 5.56 AK mags are hard to get and expensive. You can get gen 2 PMags or Brownells USGI mags on sale for $9 a piece. AKs have only recently become more modular/customizable, and you could set one up to handle similarly to an AR, at least in terms of ergonomics, but not manual of arms. AKs and ARs will weigh about the same when similarly outfitted. I would suggest spending at least $800 on an entry level AK or AR, but WASRs and Yugos are an exception at right around $500 (skip the American made junk at this price range). I'd avoid Yugos because they are different than most other AKs which are what the accessories are designed to fit. I have seen AKs fail sand tests that ARs have passed, and I've seen AKs in 7.62x39 with optics hit past 300m repeatedly. This being said, the best thing you can do with an AK is get an optic on it, because the irons are mediocre, even though they're the same radius as an M4's sights. For all of the rifles we've mentioned, I'd recommend either a micro red dot, like a Bushnell TRS-25, or a fixed power, magnified optic with BDC, like the Primary Arms 3x or 4x ACSS reticle scopes. Both are excellent for the price. Get an AR with a 1:7 twist so you can shoot M855 green tip accurately. For ARs, the USGI birdcage flash hider is an effective muzzle device; for AKs, you'll want something more than a bare muzzle or a slant brake, although the AK-74 brake is decent on 5.54 AKs. AKs generally have a shorter LOP than ARs by about 1.5", and is generally non-adjustable. You can fit M4 type stocks to AKs now however. [editline]2nd August 2016[/editline]
This is fairly specific but here goes: My carry gun is a Kahr CM9 and I'm looking for an open carry right-side belt holster with class 2 retention, can't find one anywhere. Suggestions appreciated.
Custom, so it's more expensive and there is a lead time, but you can have it any way you want it: http://www.daraholsters.com/Level-II/
Get an AR with a 1:7 twist so you can shoot M855 green tip accurately.
Don't buy M855. That stuff is mediocre. Get M193, and something with a 1:8 twist barrel.
You know I was watching this: And I was wondering. Why don't any guns have digital ammo counters? Like, in this day and age we have so much electronics being tacked onto guns, sights, dots, lasers, lights and so on and in the video the counter works REALLY well. Like, they're simple electronics too. Each shot over a certain noise threshold would drop the counter down or perhaps it would be able to count each time the bolt or action was manipulated by being fired and count down. Just be able to pre-set it "5, 10, 20, 30rds" or if you wanted to get crazy put a QR code on the lip of the magazine for the counter to read so it can tell the capacity of the mag. It just seems like it'd be really helpful. They sell reflex sights for pistols that are small, durable and reliable enough to be used on duty weapons these days and they turn themselves on and off appropriately. This is basically one of the few "big" innovations modern firearms have seen in ages. So why not ammo counters? I would love one myself I always, ALWAYS lose count. [editline]2nd August 2016[/editline] Dude I want this so bad for my Glock. If I ever got a 1911 I would absolutely get one. This shit is Blade-Runner tier cool and super useful.
Its just one more mechanism that would get in the way of the gun functioning. A counter that reads noise would get thrown off by anyone else shooting and a physical counter counting the rounds or the bolt reciprocating would be insanely hard to time and would be fragile. Plus if it gets fucked up, you wont know till you get an incorrect count. If it says you have more ammo than you have, say it says you have 5 rounds when you really have 3, could get the user killed, or if it says youre empty when you have 2 rounds left, it could cause an accident. Its not worth the risk.
I'm not usually one to like real short handguards, but that's a pretty build, I do have to admit. What brake do you have on the end?
Thanks! :) The muzzle brake was a Battlecomp 1.5 There is an FFL near me that is a Rock River dealer, and he can get me the gun I want with the upgrades I want for only about $50 over their website price, out the door. I think I'm going to pull the trigger on that with him as soon as I have the cash (about 2 weeks).
Don't buy M855. That stuff is mediocre. Get M193, and something with a 1:8 twist barrel.
Why not buy both? 1:7 shoots 55gr well enough, and I suggested M855 because that's what he'll be shooting on the government's dime unless they are issuing M855A1.

The SIG-550, I want it so damn bad.
Why not buy both? 1:7 shoots 55gr well enough, and I suggested M855 because that's what he'll be shooting on the government's dime unless they are issuing M855A1.
If they're issuing M855A1 to pog guard units like mine, chances are everyone else has been getting it for awhile. Sadly, M855A1 doesn't work so well in 1:7 barrels. About one in five rounds is a flyer. You get much better performance out of it with a 1:8 barrel.
I guess the poor reservists don't rate high enough to get any of that...
Goddamnit. Why the fuck can't we get logistics right?
That bolt looks fucking incredible
man, the bolt handle looks fucking MASSIVE it surprises me that the action looks so very smooth! give me one with a folding stock and a 20 round magazine. m50 at carbine :p
It's lighter than the M82 and has the same magazine capacity. I guess it just wasn't the right time for a man portable .50, but I'm surprised the design never re-surfaced.
So I'm debating whether or not to buy a .22LR bullet mold. I know how to reload via acetone and matchsticks, and people sell .22LR brass on Etsy for cheap-as-fuck(x300 Brass for $30.00), and I figure that I could easily get lead from the local range. So the only question is if it would be worth it or not to get some molds and just load my own ammo for my Savage for hunting and such.
Is there any money to made in buying and selling guns? IE flipping like one would with craigslist?
Minus the fact that in red states you can't find .22lr ammo anywhere because the Republican's bullshit panic cries everywhere. That is basically the only reason to contemplate reloading .22lr since it's impossible to find locally around here. [editline]3rd August 2016[/editline]
Is there any money to made in buying and selling guns? IE flipping like one would with craigslist?
If you have the dosh for Transferable NFA threes and the contacts to buy them regularly. Beyond that, sometimes you can, but it's not really a reliable source of income. Firearms stay pretty flat on their prices and you don't really make a lot on resale without being an FFA. At least in my family's experience. Collectors typically get their values for having a shit tonne of old guns that are being harder and harder to get, not from buying an SVT for $400 and selling it to some bloke on the street for $425.
$30 can just buy you 300 rounds, why buy 300 cases for the same price?
Is there any money to made in buying and selling guns? IE flipping like one would with craigslist?
You'd need an FFL, since it's illegal to profit from firearm sales.
Must be nice. In VA, $40 might buy off the gun store clerk enough to give you his personal box of 100 cci. Maybe. And that's only after a mediocre BJ.
If I knew the customs pricing, I'd probably buy the brass from you Pruss. Overall though, I'd like to get a mold because it would be nice for the hitchhiking trip I'm going on in September. The plan is to hunt small pest species and go fishing in order to survive off the land as a Great Depression hobo, and do odd-jobs to make money in order to keep living outside and such. The intent is to get lead from firing ranges, and then smelt it over a campfire, and go about reloading .22LR. Buying .22LR in general at the moment is a massive pain in the ass in the midwest because we still have people price scrapping. If I could get a mold which can make a ton of bullets, I'd be able to not only making some stuff for my own hitchhiking trips, but I'd also be able to make ~recycled~ ammo that I could sell to people locally.
You'd need an FFL, since it's illegal to profit from firearm sales.
I think it's actually legal to flip guns privately as long as it's not your main income or on an industrial scale
hell, you can go to a range and find dozens of unfired .22lr rounds on the ground. some are misfires, some just got dropped on the ground [editline]3rd August 2016[/editline] or just pick up the range brass at least
IIRC, the max amount of guns you can flip without an FFL is like 5 or 6.

Why reload 22 at all???? Its dirt cheap as it is and even if the apocalypse hit, you would never not be able to find 22 ammo. Theres wnough atacked up in reserves, private and otherwise, to last forever [editline]3rd August 2016[/editline] At least be smart about your dumb idea; buy a brick of 500 rounds and just save the brass. Why would you buy 22lr brass at all?
Maybe I should say this again: It's physically impossible to find ammo in North Dakota. The reason I'm considering reloading and buying brass, is because it'd allow me to make my own ammo to avoid giving money to price gougers.
