I don't use a bipod, my dad modified an old car jack into a gun rest and I use that instead. It's great, and it's adjustable for bench or prone for any of my guns.
I haven't seen a lot of off the shelf tactical rifles that can really compete with my M&P-15 for what it cost and how it performs. I just wish .223 was actually the affordable plinking round it used to be; no way in hell I'm paying almost a dollar a round for a gun that's not really that much fun to actually shoot unless you're going balls out with it.
Is it exclusively .223 or is it a 5.56 barrel? I've yet to see 5.56 ball go below $0.70/round since I started shooting it, and I know .223 Rem is only about $0.05 to $0.10/round more for Federal here. Obviously you can get the Russian junk for even less, but, everyone swears that's suicide or some such here.

I shoot Barnaul steel-cased .223 because it's $0.40/round. It might not be the most accurate stuff in the world, but there's nothing wrong with it.
The Air Force was the first branch to get issued M16s. I would know personally because I got issued one from 1965.
It's funny because it's a "M16A2" now. The armorers scratched out AUTO and wrote BURST. They also just wrote A2 at the end of M16.
It's cool handling one of the first M16s ever, the reciever is even marked Colt AR-15.
Since both the monopod and the bipod digs a bit into the ground, it's more than low enough. It looks tall as fuck on solid ground (read: hardwood floor), I agree, but I went out on the lawn with it earlier and it's just perfect there. Since your elbows and lower body don't sink into the ground, you lay just fine, but the rifle will always dig in when adjusting and shooting.
That's why I have a 9-13" bipod and not a 6-9" as well. The latter is much better for shooting off hard surfaces (bench shooting or on concrete/wood range floors), but on sand, gravel, and moss (as is the case with the range on some of the different range ranges (??) and the unofficial up-to-350m-range which has just a flat gravel area to shoot off) the 9-13" lets you actually have adjustment. The 6-9" is just way too low for those kinds of places.
Didn't consider that it'd dig in at all, yeah, that makes sense. I should probably try some prone shooting but I mostly have to shoot on an indoor range and have never been hunting, so I don't get the opportunity a lot.

It's a 5.56 barrel but it's just too much money either way. It's not satisfying enough in single shot to slowly work through a magazine, and too expensive to burn it up fast. More fun to shoot my bolt guns and shotguns. I keep around, like, "just in case". I dunno in case of what but hey.
If your weapon is capable of shooting 5.56, I'd buy some for use in a SHTF situation and stick to .223 for general use.
Make sure it's genuinely capable of using 5.56 though. There are weapons on the market that are labeled for its use, but actually run the risk of blowing up or malfunctioning while using it.

All M&P 15s are able to feed 5.56 NATO safely which was one of the big draws of it to me. I didn't realize I can't afford to buy bulk ammo until after I got it, but oh well.
I have a cop buddy who was issued one identical to mine and it eats 5.56 like candy.
Don't the barrel twist requirements vary rather considerably between modern 5.56 and .223? A wylde chamber just seems like a rifle that isn't going to excel at anything. I'd rather a rifle that shot 5.55 extremely well, but could also lob .223 at closer ranges.
Anyone know if the Ruger AR556 can actually cycle 5.56?
If they fucking lied when they put it together, I wanna know before getting one.

not really. maybe some semi-autos are undergassed
the shoulder diameter is very marginally different but we're talking tenths of a thou. chamber pressures are lower with 5.56
for the most part anything that will run .223 will run 5.56 and anything that will run 5.56 will run .223 without any issue. point of impact might change slightly
But... we're talking about affordable ammunition?
I don't know if you guys are talking about current panic prices or something but 5.56 is not fucking 70c a round.
What are you talking about?
A lot of old hunting 223 rifles come with 1:12 or 1:10 twists for 55-60gr bullets. M193 is 55gr, m855 is 62gr
Newer rifles are more often 1:9/8/7 for heavier bullets (62gr and 69gr for 1:9).
Wylde is literally only a chamber spec, you can get a barrelblank with your preferred twist and have it reamed for wylde
There is no normal wylde twist spec
[editline]18th December 2015[/editline]
My cz527 has a wylde or similar chamber. It shoots both civilian 223 (50 and 55gr) and nato spec 5,56 (danish 62gr m855 and Czech m193) very well.
I had it in my head that .223 and 5.56 generally prefer different twist specs, but I'd forgotten that muzzle velocity doesn't play a part in preferred twist, only weight, which makes it largely irrelevant. My mistake.

I was about to say, I could have bought 1,000 rounds of brass cased ammo for $0.40 per. Hell, I buy .308 for much cheaper than $0.70 a round.
My shotgun finally came in. Pics will be posted when I get a chance. Learned a few things right off the bat.
Immediately disassembled to clean it out and learned my first lesson. Extended magazine tube springs are LOOOOONG. Second lesson was that the spring is a major pain in the ass to shove back into place and put the extension back on.
This shotgun is not going to get cleaned often I think. Probably only when the thing starts jamming like crazy. The gun feels very light for what it is though. Nice sharp checkering on the plastic stock and the bolt is really easy to move. I can do it with my pinkie finger if I wanted to. Gonna test it out this weekend. Its looking like a good $550 well spent especially now that another panic is building.
I remember when the Magpul Glock mags came out,, they had a serious issue that pretty much rendered them non-functional. Magpul refunded/replaced everyones mags and I haven't heard anything bad about them since. Magpul generally makes good shit. Never had issue with their AR mags.
I'll probably buy a few and just run about 200 rounds through all of them, if I don't have mag issues (excluding the gun itself fucking up ) I'll run them, they're gonna be my SD mags.
She came in! Every mag I tested does not wobble at all besides on of my korean 20 rounders.
Ignore the shitty airsoft-tier sling, will replace it soon with a real Polish sling

I've got a Polish sling I'm looking to sell. Got it new, and it saw very little use before I put QD sockets in and went to a Magpul sling.

I love Australia. I bought 100 rounds of .308 American Eagle 168grn. Supposedly these will shoot the best out of my Rem700 AAC SD (1:10 barrel). Now these were also some of the cheapest .308 rounds in the store... 210AUD, But because I bought 100 I got a discount. 187AUD. At $1.87 a round how can I go wrong.
$2/round for American Eagle? Jesus. Can't you guys get some Norinco surplus for cheap? I mean, China's right there.
Do you have any of these blue plastic DAG 7.62x51 rounds, prusse?

I have 200 Australian army SLR 7.62 rounds, but I needed something to do my 1000m Long Range Course. The guy at the shop says that if he needs brass for reloading he buys these because they work to 1000m and the brass is good, he swears by them... but we shall see.

Once again I've proved to myself that my memory is terrible.
Probably getting myself a 1860 colt replica by Uberti, are those worth it? Black powder guns are a lot easier to get a license for in Finland so I've been looking into them lately
As I understand it, Ubertis are more consistently good quality than other brands' powder pistols. If you have the patience for black powder, I say go for it. 1860s are ugly but I won't judge you.
Yeah they're not exactly pretty. I'm still torn between that or a Pietta 1858 remmy.
[editline]18th December 2015[/editline]
The colt would be hundreds of euros cheaper, which is a pretty big plus since it'd be my first black powder gun.
