You should look at the Marlin 795. A great 22lr rifle for the money you put into it. Has a good barrel contour and has a last shot hold open. A very reliable 22.
The only thing with the 795 is I don't think they make extended mags for it. The 597 they make 30-rounders and the 10/22 has 110 round drums.

does the 597 have a last round catch? my model 600 is supposed to but the thing doesn't work

Yes. Depending on the mag it can be a bit finicky, my clear plastic 30-rounder sometimes doesn't activate it, but it does have one.

Promag makes a 25round one that shockingly works for the 795. Most of the other extended mags for any 22lr gun have spotty reliability anyway, even the aftermarket 10/22 mags except for Ruger's mags.
I can't think of wasting a chunk of change on unreliable extended mags when it can be put towards better upgrades, more factory mags, or ammo.

Marlin's last round catch works every time. In the case of the 600, in order to lock the bolt open, you must pull the bolt back and push the charging handle in. The charging handle has a stud that fits into a recess in the receiver to hold the bolt open. The 795 has that old system in it too, besides the mag/lever activated bolt hold open.

I'm like 90% sure thats what race guns are.
Race guns would look so much better if their color scheme didn't make me think "cheap mcdonalds happy meal toy".
On some of them they've got the worst markings on it, I mean, who doesn't want their slide to have ELIT3 FORCE written all over it?

holy shit, you just made my day! I'm gonna have to try that out and make sure it works that way when I get back from the desert, thank you kindly!
if I were to buy a race gun it would be a CZ Czechmate

just because you can't beat that name
[editline]10th February 2016[/editline]
they sell it in "parrot" too which is the same but with a blue optics riser, yellow scales, orange trigger and magazines, red irons, and a green magwell flare extension and that's just fun
[editline]10th February 2016[/editline]
a czechmate is a $3000 gun and includes everything in that photo plus some magazines so imo it's a hell of a deal for such a nice gun
Guns with punny names are the best.

I got to handle one that someone sold to my shop in 9mm major. It's a damn nice gun, just wish I had the opportunity to shoot it before we sold it.
Bought two new handguns today.
Everyone gave me money for my birthday to pay for my Glock 26 Gen 3 so I went and paid for that today.
I also bought a SCCY CPX-2 entirely with credit card reward points. So I essentially got a free gun.
So now I gotta go to the county clerk tomorrow and hand in all my god damn paperwork, pay them and wait three weeks before I can go pick up the guns. And I'll have to do two background checks back to back, great.
I'm still excited.

These are the last handguns I'm buying. We're moving to Texas in two years or less if we can help it.
I actually applied to a gun shop for now though. The guy I bought from today recommended me.

I've always wanted to work at a gun shop it's such a magical environment to be in and you're always happy when your in the gun store :v:
I'm not looking forward to running a register or explaining to customers the draconian laws of NY but if I got the job it's a 20% discount and 30% off store branded stuff.
My Glock 26 has the serial number BAEEXXX
So it's my new Bae

That's what it seems like, until you actually start working there.
"You got any Hornaby three-oh-six?"
"Are those real? I thought they were illegal."
"I gotta tell you about this buck I shot 500 metres away with my smoothbore shotgun."
"Do you have a Savage 110 -insert a bunch of letters here- with a very specific twist rate in .338 Lapua? I want it for moose hunting."
It gets old, fast.
We're a fuddy hunting store, half the staff barely know what twist rate means, and we don't carry some specific precision rifle sub model of Savage.
Also Savage has like 50 sub models for each gun they make that are all an annoying string of letters, half of which you can't even find on their website, because when you try the customer keeps going "No, that's not it. It has a laminate pistol-grip stock and comes with a scope on it." Or some other vague shit that half the time they don't actually make.
Then when you say you don't have it they go, "Oh, well -other local shop- has it..." And you think to yourself 'Why not just go fucking buy it there' until they then say "...but I know you guys do 15% off a lot so I was hoping to get the discount." Even though it's been a month and a half since the sale ended and it won't be another 2 months until anything remotely similar is likely to happen again.
yeah then it's something else.
anyone who works in a gunstore and doesn't know what a twist rate is should be either educated or told to come back when they have learned more though.
Most sales drones, especially with smaller stores, don't know what they're selling in any market.
Twist rate by and large doesn't matter for the average hunting gun. I didn't learn why it mattered until I bought my Howa 6 months ago. It's not something we're usually asked about, nor something our usual clientel cares about.
We're also one department of like 10 people in an outdoors store of over 100 employees. I'm actally the one with the most technical knowledge there, and all my coworkers have told me that at one point.
Really the only time you need to worry about twist rates is if you plan on running something specifically. That's why most AR's in 5.56 on the market run a 1:9 twist, it's the middle of the road between the original 1:12 (well technically 1:14) and the current 1:7. A 1:9 will stabalize 50gr all the way up to 70gr pretty well. You really only need a 1:12 if you plan on running 55gr or less, and a 1:7 62gr and more.
Hell they're making 1:6.5 barrels now for the match shooters running 77-80gr projectiles.
Once again that's running something very specific. Your average joe isn't going to go out of his way to do something like that when your American Eagle 55gr costs 8 bucks a box.
kinda sucks if someone buys their dream fudd-master 400 in .223, .308 or 6,5x55 with a shitty twist rate for a typical hunting factory load, though
idk
only gun store close to me has a somewhat qualified bunch of people working there so
Well that's like the guys who buy the high end sports car and crash it right after getting it. They're too focused on the image and not the practicality.
At least for me when people ask me for a Noveske or a JP Enterprise I first ask them why. Too often people spend a shit ton of money on a gun and it just sits in the safe cause they spent it all on the gun and had nothing left for ammo. When they do shoot it they're punching holes in paper at 25 yards and that's it.
I've got no problem with buying high end rifles, "because I can" is an acceptable answer, but for most folks something like that is overkill for what they're going to do with it. I try to show them alternatives that are less pricey and still do what they plan on doing with it.

Picked this up for $800, did I do good? Comes with 4 magazines, the original furniture, and a non-folding stock. The original furniture is still polymer else I would just put it back on.
7.62x51, Saiga
Nice find. Make sure those mags work though. Not too many companies made .308 mags for Saigas, and the the ones that did have spotty reliability, even the SGMs.
Any idea which magazines work the best? I'll probably buy a few of em
[editline]12th February 2016[/editline]
I'm thinking SGM or Surefire
It's going to be just like the whole issue with Promags. When alternative mag options are only a handful of companies, you have to gamble a little. I got lucky with the Promags for a C93, all of them worked.
Saiga mags in general are not cheap.
Buy 1 mag from both of those companies, just be ready to do some sanding or shaving on the mags to get them to work.
Check out this company too:

Also, question. I've got the stock furniture set, but the gas tube has those... AK style upper handguard retainer ring things on them, which makes the one piece factory handguard not fit.
Am I missing something here? The retainer things look like they're welded on.
[editline]12th February 2016[/editline]
All the saiga's I see online have flat gas tubes, without those little rings. do I have to buy another gas tube if I want to use the factory furniture?

Do you have a better picture of the rings? Some are simply pinned on while others are crimped on. If it's crimped you're going to have to get a new tube to use the stock furniture.
There's definitely no pins, it's gotta be crimped. Oh well!
I saw IO Inc. on the handguard and almost panicked, but it's just the handguard manufacturer. Anyone know how universal those handguards are? Can I use any AK handguard on the Saiga? I would assume not

Well anything regarding an AK usually requires some fitting. Stuff for original pattern AK's (Russian AKM) usually works with Saigas without too much modification.
shot a USP for the second time in my life today and i have to say i think i am in love with it
also finally got to shoot that ruger blackhawk that's been sitting in my house, which was also amazing
USPs are nice but they're pretty damn huge.
Back when I was a kid shooting IPSC I used to have the range officers get pissy with me because they though I had my finger on the trigger when moving. In reality it was me using my trigger finger to manipulate the magazine catch because by thumb wasn't long enough to reach it on the normal side.
