The slide release on my 4506 is really out there. Kind of a pain when I'm shooting right handed.
I was looking at the muzzle of my Saiga, and thought "Wow, the end of that barrel looks really small. How does a 7.62mm bullet fit through that?"
So I picked up a .308 round, and it doesn't. The bullet fits about 4/5ths of the way in, then stops. Keep in mind I'm poking the tip of a full cased cartridge into the muzzle end of the gun, essentially backwards, but even the full bullet doesn't fit in up to the cartridge neck. I've got a 7.62x39 AK, and the muzzle on that looks much bigger. I must be missing something.

A .223 bullet fits all the way up to the cartridge neck into the barrel. Does my .308 marked and fitted Saiga have a .223 or 5.45 barrel on it? Well, there's no way, because I've chambered .308 snap caps perfectly into the chamber of the gun. How the hell does a gun fire a .308 round, when the end of the barrel doesn't even have room for a 7.62 caliber bullet?

The bullet diameter is supposed to fit the grooves, not the lands. How else is it going to form a gas seal?
So what?
You said it as if it was strange.

What you did is a field test for checking the rifling at the muzzle; if the bullet makes it into the muzzle past the ogive, the barrel should be cut and crowned or replaced.

We learn something every day I guess :(

Was supposed to go shooting today, took time off work and everything, but it was -25 this morning and the zipper on my jacket broke last night. I'm a bit pissed.

eh, why not?
used R93 in .30-06 for 1750$
i can flip the barrel for at least 500 bucks, then buy a new 6,5x55 barrel, put a scope and can on it
I hate you so much. Blaser rifles are stupidly expensive over here. $1750 is a steal. We have to pay at least $2500 for a used one.
I saw an absolutely ancient CAR-15 look alike at my local gun shop for $395. Someone must've put the wrong price tag on it or something. It definitely looked like it'd been there and done that, and the buffer detent spring was going out, but holy damn...

Buy it and see if it explodes.
Some cop guy ended up grabbing it up 'for service.' It looked like it was in good shape. The buffer flew out when the guy behind the counter broke it down though :v:
But I did end up googling to see what it was really worth. I feel pretty goddamn dumb now.

Who was the manufacturer? If it was a genuine colt:
If not you might have dodged a bullet. A few jenky companies hobbled together guns from milsurp parts or cheap chinese shit.
100% sure that it wasn't a Colt. It was Olympic Arms I think.
100% sure that it wasn't a Colt. It was Olympic Arms I think.
Ahh, you dodged a bullet. Early olympics were known to use things like cast bolts. It could have been an amalgamation as well, olympic sold their lowers at rock bottom prices back in the day and your average joe would cobble Frankenstein guns together with varying degrees of success.
At the very least, the gun would have been worth a parts kit worth of stuff. Pull the furniture and stock off, and build a nicer CAR 15.
First time today shooting my AR15. Gotta say.. i'm in love. Too bad the weather around here atm is absolute shit. But once it clears up, gonna shoot it some more. Plan to get a slidefire stock for it too. So fucking excited eeeeeeeee
[sp] before I get the inevitable comments about a bump fire stock being a bad idea, I understand it's easy to fuck up your gun with it if you're not careful. I understand it's best to only use one on a high quality AR or just an AR in general with a high quality barrel. But I plan to give it time to cool (of course) and treat it gently because after all.. this is only a $580 AR, not meant to take full auto. [/sp]

If it's only 580 fuck it and burn out the barrel. You can get good quality barrels for as little as $130 bucks and with a vice and armorers wrench they're pretty easy to replace.
Just for reference for in the future, can you point me to a good barrel?
For decent burner barrels Anderson makes good stuff, same with ESS solutions. I've got some barrels from Desan USA that kick ass for something that costs less than $150, although I don't think that's something you can just order online. If you're looking for something really nice you can get match grade hand lapped barrels from X-caliber for about $225 up go 18".

Anderson, Daniel Defense, Sabre Defense if you can still find one (they were shut down a few years ago for selling guns without serial numbers)

AR Performance is great for the price too.

the gas tubes are supposed to fail before the barrel can
the gas tubes are supposed to fail before the barrel can
This is true but that's not always the case. IV888's AR meltdown video is a perfect example of that.

Also, with a lower rate of fire, you're more likely to see throat erosion before your gas tube ever goes.

Happened to me when I shot an IWI Tavor rental at the local range. Fuck, that bothered me for at least a week. I still feel it if it's really cold outside.

I don't know what it is, but I kinda want a surplus Gorka uniform, actually. More than an American BDU of any sort.
